    Love the efficient and elegant way your thoughtful design addresses the challenges of van life in such a small space. Build quality and craftsmanship also appears to be top notch. I would love to see additional videos on your "build" with details on your hardware choices like the drawer glides and and swivel. Thx and keep up the great work. Btw your presentation is very clear and concise and your video production quality is excellent!

    Thanks so much for this. It makes more sense to me to have the kitchen stuff near the slider, as well as on the opposite side of the van from the driver for a slightly better weight distribution too. I am glad to see this, since I have a gutted interior so have opportunity to try this.

    Noticed you prefer being standing outside, you also mention that the last place you want to be is inside cooking. Nice set up. I made one that stands outside on a sliding rail. More work, a tent roof it its raining BUT, no smells in the van. Maybe next time. And of course if its really too windy and wet outside you can also cook inside if you realy want to. Great vans.

    Kirt Fitzpatrick what I mean is when I look directly in your side door I see a bench right n there Normally there is a bench facing the same direction as the driver and passenger seat in the back of the van Do you have both, don't you? Like you have an L-shaped formation of benches???? I'm asking all these questions because I want To get one of these and use it with a friend and we both want to sleep on the lower level and separately

  • @KirtFitzpatrick

    @KirtFitzpatrick

    It's an L shaped bench, yes. The whole thing turns into one bed. The rear bench (forward facing) houses the water tank, and the side bench is all storage for bedding.

    Love your van. I have two here in Maui. My question is did or does your van have the long piece on the ceiling that runs the length of the van? Since, to my knowledge, we can no longer buy the AC coolant, do we need that long tube thingy? I would really like to rip them out, rip the entire ceiling out and do something cool with it. Any thoughts? Also, why did you opt for the non pop top version? I didn't want the pop top because everything gets destroyed by mold and mildew here and I rent these out and feel like shit would get trashed. I love your van, keep the videos coming.

    The fridge has an on/off switch so it's only on when I want it on. It draws power form a 176 Ah 'house' battery that is powered by both the alternator and 240 Watts of solar panels. Same for water pump, lights, inverter and accessory charging ports. The hot water heater is propane and tankless. It only uses propane when the water runs through it. It has no on/off switch as it doesn't need one. Same for the hot air heater and the propane stove. There is a 3.3 Gal propane tank mounted under the van like a westy would have. Hope that helps.

    Hi Kirk. Thats a great set up. Ingenious, I am about to start a T3 renovation in a tintop window syncro van and have been considering getting a second hand westy multivan interior, but I think your solution beats that for me. Any chance on some extra info on all the black surface mounted bits above the draws on the sink/fridge side please. Cheers Rich

    The stuff above the drawers is all the electrical and some plumbing. I call that the utility cabinet. In there is: solar charge controller, fuse box, fridge compressor, sink, some plumbing, and wires wires wires. On the door are switches (lights, fridge, water pump, accessories, and some spare switches), remote panel for the inverter, remote panel for the charge controller, fan to cool the refrigerator compressor. and on the side is the water tank fill port. If I were to do it over again, I would not have the fridge compressor in that cabinet. That's a pretty big item. Without it in that spot I could drop the sink about 7 or so inches, give it a back splash and the sink and the refrigerator would be much more accessible and would really open up the space. It could also be made the height of the cutting board which would look slick. If I could find a single burner propane stove I'd use that too which would allow me to make the bed wider. Turning the stove 90 degrees is also an option but I'd rather have the wider entryway. Check out my instagram account for lots more detailed pics.

    I use the same water pump for the hot water heater as the rest of the system. It's a 3gpm 50psi flojet water pump. Much more powerful than the submersible pump in a Westy if that's what you're asking about.

    So, with all the washing outside your door, and spraying around as well, how do you manage the mud you've just created? I imagine the forest litter being tracked into your van. Otherwise, I think that looks awesome. I like the bench seat behind the driver's seat.

  • @KirtFitzpatrick

    Usually the spray goes to one side of the sliding door or the other. I try to use the sprayer as sparingly as I can to conserve water. Misting. Doing it that way has the added benefit of not getting the ground very wet. In practice I haven't noticed tracking self-made mud into the van to be a problem. I used water liberally in this video because I was close to home and water conservation wasn't a priority. I recently did buy a plastic welcome mat for various purposes, one of which is to mitigate dirt being tracked into the van. All types of dirt get tracked into the van regardless of whether I used the sprayer.

    Hmm... I have a few close ups on my instagram page. What I did is I purchased a rear table arm from gowesty and then brought that to my metal worker friend. First attempt was a fail, tolerances were too tight and metal on metal. Even spray painting the arm made it completely unusable. He was able to cut the mounts and modify them with a much larger ring diameter, then sent both the mounts and the table arm to powder coat, then with both back in his hands, he made black delrin bushings to the exact dimensions. Works flawlessly now, far better than I ever envisioned. I imagine that you could make mounts out of wood but haven't thought it through.

    Philip Emanuele it's a propane tankless. The brand is Marey. But the same unit is branded by different companies. Might have bought it at Home Depot. I just have a simple T hose connection splitting the water between the sink and the heater/sprayer. Heater turns on automatically when I open the sprayer and water moves through the heater. Works pretty well. Only downside is if you shower and turn the water on and off a lot you'll get varying degrees of hot and cold. If it's on in a steady stream the temp stays very consistent.

    I have never understood an outdoor kitchen, I understand the option for when the weather is good, but....when it is cold, or rains, or snows, what then and it is far from stealth. You don't really need a camper a tent will do.

    It's just my process, prep the veggies while the eggs are cooking to save time. No real rhyme or reason other than that.

    Hahah goddamn, these comments are ridiculous. just watch his video and how he does shit and move on. I'm sure he doesn't care if you think he's doing stuff wrong. it's obviously working for him so let it be.
