VW Passat TDI 2.0 Turbo Failure
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
There was a recall on this particular turbo, on my 2012 Volkswagen Passat TDI. The extended warranty was for 10 years, or 120,000 miles. This one lasted 173,000 before it failed. This was my first attempt at replacing. The removal process was very time consuming and not an easy process at all. Hopefully the install goes s little smoother and quicker!

I have my own vw shop so this is the sort of thing I work on daily, I know its a struggle when your not used to it.
I had an Audi A4 for a short while. The cam chain tensioner went out, I replaced with with a repro part ($100 vs $750), made sure it ran right and traded it in. It was a nightmare to replace. I love the German stuff for many reasons but don’t think I will ever own another one that I have to work on…
My 13’ Jetta just had the turbo replaced at 165k miles. The compressor wheel exploded in half, was pretty impressive. I rocked the engine forward from undoing the dog bone mount to the transmission and got it out that way.
Good luck putting it all back together on the first try
John you should of callled me. I would of walked you through this been doing egr cooler flushes and dpf flushed this last week on these and the Audis and eco diesels . Take that egr cooler off and stick it in a bucket of purple power and water for a few hours you’ll hate for it to get plugged after just being there. Also it’s easier to disconnect the spindles from the struts and the rack from the sun frame and bungie cord up the passenger side of the rack so you can remove the whole sub frame and have tons of room to work.
T.J. always a pleasure
Currently doing a 2008 Touran 1.9TDi BLS Pd105, what a pain in the arse.
John my grandpa had a great saying for times like this. He would say "jack the radiator cap up as high as you can, then drive a new car right under it" problems solved....except for the money part but hey we only have this one life to live. So two tears in a bucket....fuckit.
John on that turbo on the Passat you have to check the feeding line that goes to the turbo to feed the oil it kind of gets cooked internally and that's why it stops for oil and they break

Yes, I bought a new feed line as well

Its good practice to replace the turbo oil feed lines whenever the turbo fails, as said above they clog up.
I work on this type of stuff daily. I’m not a big fan of Volkswagens or any European cars for that matter. Usually they’re way over complicated although a lot of them do drive nice

You can thank the Government for the complicated emissions system older Vw diesels are very simple machines.
Dimmit looks like a great time to build a headder and upsize that turbo. 😉😁🤣
Is this turbo lubricated by engine oil? If is is use synthetic oil and when the engine is hot let it idle for a few minutes before you shut if off.
John what are you gonna due with them extra parts now that it's moded
Do you still have the turbo and injectors from that L10 Cummins. Now would be a good time for an upsize.
my crapped out at 120k luckily it was covered by dieselgate warranty.
I had the exact same thing happened to my car at 103,000 miles
What's the duty of big hole on top of oil filter
Take upper motor mount body bolts out and lower tork mount bolt and engine will come forward pull from top
TBH 173 miles for a turbo is a lot (about 270km), that's engine half life (most heavy users would be more than happy(ideal case) if a diesel engine reaches 340 miles, here in Europe). VW diesel engines are great, never let you down without giving you signs
Sell it! Buy a Volvo with D5 engine. No kidding. Thanks for all great racing videos!
I've been a Mechanic for 44 years. I won't work on anything made in Germany
Get a TDI they said!..... It'll be fun they said...... That sucks man!
My techs would tell me to send VW’s to the wholesaler or to the dealer for repairs😂.
Great video! So I have a 2014 Passat TDI and recently I been getting a static P00AF00 and oddly enough I have some kind of leak that’s coming from somewhere around the turbo/DPF. The vehicle has loss of power/limp mode. Trying to diagnose and hoping it’s something simple and not the turbo. Any suggestions on how to go about diagnosing the issue?

I’ve got big oil leak somewhere there too, bloody thing smoke 💨 when hot.. did you find your leak 😢
This has been such a pain ughhhhh
Jesus. What’s the book time on that job? That looks horrible to do
This why I will not buy a turbo personal car. The turbo generally only lasts for a hundred thousand miles and are extremely expensive to replace it you can't do the work yourself.
These cars were not designed to be work on easily, you should drop the engine out of the bottom
What year is this one ?
Welcome to my world! Diesels are my specialty. My hands always smell like diesel fuel and have a permanent grey color to them. The stuff don't come off.
I have a 2013 Passat TDI with 104k but it's over 10 years by a couple months. It was in the shop last thankgiving for a failed heater core that was on another similar extended warranty. Shouldn't they have informed me off his issue while it was all apart? Were all the 2013 Passat TDI's part of this? Was this a recall or just an extended warranty? One owner car purchased at that dealer. I even asked them if there any more issues I should be watching out for like the heater core. You would think they would keep me in the loop. If mine is going to fail like that I think I'll be changing out the turbo core before it has a chance to break and ruin the whole assembly. Hopefully I can leave the exhaust/turbo compressor manifold in the car and swap everything from the top. Can't wait for the DPF to fail, I'm sure that will be cheap.

The warranty he spoke about sounded an awful lot like the dieselgate warranty I just put my Vin in and there is no warranty or recall on the turbo just the dieselgate stuff.
You’re turbo John fir a reason
Hello and good day. Thanks for a great video. New subscriber here. Can you confirm year and recall info. We have a 2014 Passat with 109k
Any chance you could tell me how you wiggled it out? I am having a heck of a time!!!

I’m sorry, I have deleted that memory from my memory! Probably one of the hardest jobs I’ve ever done! It was very difficult, I honestly don’t remember! Good luck!
This a CVCA engine or a prior engine code?

Lack of “Maintenance”… 🤷♂️ Jeremy Hoskinson theory. 😁😁😁
Brian knows what up Trade it in on a honda
Bradenton is under attack Cletus needs help with saving the track need you to send an email🤔🤔🤔🤔👍👍👍👍
Yea i would have dropped the engine/trans out the bottom about a foot
Take the summer air out n install winter air in the tires while your at it. Or you can get it from the top but it is same amount of time. I would rather not have to learn over the fenders anymore I would rather lift the body off and sit on the frame and get to everything I need . When having a lift. And you wondering why the book time says 18 hrs. So people like you get charged that when it's a hour job when you think your work all the way thru. From start to finish 3 times before you loosen your first bolts.
🤔 Turbo John is the perfect guy for the job. Just replace old one with a new precision 98 and problem solved .
The gerbil wheel is broken and nobody is happy....
put a pro mod 98 on it lol
I would look at Humble Mechanic's channel, he messes with VAG products all the time. And yes, this car falls into the lawsuit cars. Like another poster said, get a Honda......leave that thang alone
well turbos do have lifetimes... and 99% much shorter than the engines... no matter the brand or maker... well you were unlucky you found the end of that one... but turbos do give out in diesels or gasoline engines... turbos just dont give out in cars that dont have them 😅 reliability usually comes in the package of slow and boring cars xD
How did it go again? chew chew chew 😆😆

No blow offs! Stu tu tu
Is that one of those cars that were faking emissions?
If it's German engineered it's over-engineered lol 🤣
