Alex, I've been in the tech business for over 40 years. Cardinal rule: Never buy the first version of anything. Specially from a company that has a reputation for not caring. I WANT to love VW, but can't. I've owned several over the years, and only had good ownership experiences with the old air-cooleds. We've had a Model 3 for more than two years and it has been, in all objectivity, an exceptional experience, including their customer service. And what has been ever-increasingly clear is their biggest advantage is their software. Which - as you found out - is KEY to overall EV performance. Perhaps VW's next gen will be better (the ID.7 looks promising). I hope so. But I'm still skeptical and would wait to see what happens with the first wave of buyers. At this point - even though Musk is an unmitigated social disaster - Elon, stay in your lane! Your clearly adolescent social skills are embarrassing! - the next EV for us still looks like a Tesla.

Given Elon's conduct in China it is obvious he has the social skills. As a free thinker he chooses when to apply them. Here in Europe it has long been known that the software in these cars is awful - VW have now already released a complete updated version of the ID3 (which I believe is not sold in the US) This version is basically the car they should have released in the first place - there were so many complaints that they had to listen. As well as a complete overhaul of the interior materials (much higher quality) there has been a complete overhaul of the cars software, which was the thing that had the most complaints.

I was very close to getting an ID.4 last year in July, but couldn't find one without massive markup or a 6 month delay. I ended up with a Chevy EUV instead. I'm pleasantly surprised, 1 year later with the car. No real issues besides a gasket that needed glued. Wireless Android Auto is 99.9% reliable, only acting up when my phone's Bluetooth is janked and the phone needs rebooted. Tire pressure is also shown per tire, and seems to update a few times a minute. I'm astonished that Chevy was able to make a great infotainment system, while VW can't.

Overheating and dropping is normal for all phones when using wireless android auto, or when using wireless charging. Solution is to disable wireless android auto and use USB cable for wired android auto. Also make sure not to place your phone into the wireless charging slot. Wireless charging without any ventilation is not usable, phone overheats in 10 minutes. This is the same for all cars, not just VW.

It is soooo cheap and never need any service. That is the story every single time. Problem is no one believes you, just look at the panel gaps or fogged up lights and anyone can see that Teslas quality is shit poor. And this youtube channel had a bunch of problems that made him change brand. Do you really think Tesla worked out a complete trashcan to be a huge success now? No, of course not. They still suck.

it all depends on the extras you have ordered cause different control units or set of control units causes a lot of trouble where the dealers had to learn on customer cars what it takes to fix them. sometimes they had to do it multiple times which means updating each and every control unit, not only a few , every single one. And if something goes wrong they try over and over again till they learned how to partially update those units where the update had not worked out. Finally: some cars had different issues and needed 1 or even more new control units which might take longer cause they needed - after several attempts to fix it - the spare part first to start again. Therefore you find customers that got their car in the evening and other days later which means usually 1 to 10 days. All was well known if someone checked the german face book groups and other forums. Each and every fault was well known he had mentioned in the video and really astonishing to see that he even did not know the 12V battery charging issue. Which was totally easy to fix if you know about more how the issue was caused not really by the battery, but bby the energymeter cause the battery is not measured by voltage but by counting what goes into the battery and what goes out. If that drifts away everything goes wrong. To fix it there is a simple routine: charge the battery fully - connect it in the car - go into the obd dongle software and change the serial number there Do not think I am fooling you cause we all know that batteries have no serial number or communication lines, right ?! So: it works this way cause once you put any different serial number in the car sets the columbmeter or energymeter that tracks this battery back to full based on the capacity the battery has so maybe 80 Ah which means 960 Wh. And then the cars tracks the battery state by measuring what goes out of the battery and what goes in ... but from the right fully charged point that has not drifted away over time Does any average mechanic know about that? He should but they do not cause they do not really believe the stuff they are told to do and to learn. So by replacing the current battery serial with a new one you tell the car the 12v battery is fully charged and then everything is fine cause it then know when to recharge that from the main battery. Be aware of it and you have a lot less issues easy to fix by yourself or any garage that has at least a medioce mechanic. The roots of these issues are well known and date back to the introduction of start stop automatics where they wanted to make sure not to turn off the car at a red light when the car would not turn on again. That is impossible with 12 V lead acid and measuring only the Voltage, that needed a lot more and hence the energymonitor came in 10 years ago and suddenly caused here in the ID family new issues.

Very clickbaitey title and thumbnail, you act like the main reason you sold the car was because it “sucked” but a big reason of it is because you’re moving to Thailand. Which you didn’t mention until half way through the video, that feels disingenuous to me. A lot of this video seems like an overreaction too. The Android Auto rant that takes up too much time than it should. Android Auto sucks, I’ve had connection issues with multiple cars and phones. You having what looks like an old Google Pixel doesn’t help either, those are known for having glitchy and faulty hardware and software. Your phone overheating is not going to be ONLY the cars fault. Every car I’ve used with CarPlay works as it should while I’ve had so many issues with Android Auto. It’s not really a safety issue either, you shouldn’t be trying to fix Android Auto while driving you should pull over always. You spend so much time complaining about small issues like the Android Auto and dont really talk about the actual issues like the 12v issues causing the car to brick. The 12v issues were also to be addressed in the recall update to 2021 models you had right before you sold it so they should not happen anymore. I appreciate you saying the 2022 and 2023s are better, because they are. I have one and I love love love it. No issues at all and it’s comfortable with great range charging and price. Not saying these issues are ok but if you’re buying a brand new year one car model with a completely new powertrain there’s most likely to be issues. Even a year one car from a company that’s known for being reliable like Toyota can have major issues. You should avoid first year cars if you don’t want issues. 2022 and 2023 ID.4s do not have many issues.

The one thing about Teslas that I honestly find enjoyable is that the infotainment system is pretty much the fastest and quickest I've ever used in any car, EV or no. There's barely any lag like you'd find with Apple Car Play. It's rather sad that other car companies aren't focusing on the software part as much as Tesla.

Like you, I've also experienced years of frustration with my brand new Volkswagen Tiguan. At just 4 months old my new Tiguan died whilst driving along and rolled to a stop, and yet somehow there was no record of it dying in the car's system, so Volkswagen's said they can't do anything without the error code. Logically that is clearly part of the problem, but VW wouldn't even investigate. The car's camera, entertainment system, randomly dies. The car sensors constantly false trigger over nothing and I have nearly been in multiple serious accidents when my Tiguan suddenly brakes on the freeways. VW claim this is normal/acceptable. The auto stop/start have left me stranded in the middle of the road multiple times and I have to wait about 10 minutes for the Tiguan to reboot. Gearbox is a mess and all over the place. Every step of the way VW have been beyond difficult, deliberate stonewalling. Customer service took an astounding 9 months to respond to my well documented email about my Tiguan's faults. Complaints were dismissed and I was told the manager I was going to lodge a complaint about would himself be the person reviewing my complaint about him. It was the most astounding ongoing head banging experience I have ever had in my life. I have never seen such horrible, blatant disregard towards customers, VW's conduct is immoral and shameful. But hey, this is the company that deliberately deceived millions of their customers with Dieselgate!

This is nothing new, the issues yiu describe about your VW. I gave up on anything produced by VW/Audi about 15 yrs ago. The '86 golf that had been totalled was the only reliable one of the bunch that I bit as a cheap and fun project car, repaired and drove it trouble free for over 6 years. But then i got stupid and bought a succession of german junk mobiles including a new 2000 GTI VR6 that immediately had various parts falling off, terrible dealer service for a multitude of failing sensors and finally the manual tranny was shot at 15k miles. Same thing, but even more of a loss on an Audi A6 Avante wagon. Teutonic nightmare with failing electrical, headlights, steering rack, tranny replacement, oil leaks. And i babied these cars with immaculate service and driving habits. I made the switch to Subaru, Honda, and now Lexus. Never looked back and honestly have never had a major fail other than the fuel injector O rings on a 2005 tundra that i drove for 13 years. No comparison to the component and build quality of Toyota / Honda to any German make. Japanese is built to last. German cars will become a money pit in very short order. I hope you found peace and a new brand as I did.

TPMS, learn how to use a tire pressure gauge. An ABS TPMS will never respond to tire pressure changes until you drive it. I mean, come on, as a car reviewer, you should know cars better. Audio issues, whenever you use a voice command with the phone it defaults to "voice control", you have to hit the infotainment power button or volume slider with two fingers to go back to music audio. It is a PITA but manageable.

No problems after 4 months. my biggest annoyance are things like not being able to keep the ambient light on when parked with the rest of the lights off. Software-updatable things, I would assume, and expect over time. Nothing bad enough in 3.1 to actually be frustrating. And it drives like a dream, for sure. So smooth and easy. Travel Assist works way better than I expected -- it handled two hours for me yesterday driving back from a festival, on country roads and then into highway traffic, with me being able to relax much more. I've really got into the right groove with knowing how much attention to pay to what with Travel Assist on. I'm only paying about $25 CDN a month in electricity. Last but not least, in the winter I loved chilling in it with the heated seat on, laying way back, massage on. I thought the massage would be a gimmick but dang, I love it. Tunes turned up. View out the roof. I would do this by the beach, or sometimes in my own driveway because it feels that good in the BC west coast winter.

Have had a Model Y LR for 8 months now and not one issue. The only service appointment we made was to have someone install the roof rack we bought and they came to the house and installed it for free as well as checked the tire inflation. Just like being an early adopter with the ID 4 being an early adopter with the Model S put you in a spot to see the worst side of Tesla. I think you need to get a Model 3 and find out all you issues with Tesla are historical. Not that Tesla or the Model 3 are perfect but they do not have any of the software issues you described with the ID4.

Well Alex, sorry to hear all your troubles in what was according to you a really great car initially! I also had same issue with my 2023 Ioniq 5, we had two EVs, 2019 Soul EV and a 2020 Soul EV, we traded our 2019 Soul EV for a long awaited 2023 Ioniq 5 (limited equivalent here in Canada), got a really great trade value and took delivery in Oct 2022, loved that car, was totally awesome. We kept the 2020 Soul EV for our daily driver and the Ionic 5 was to be our road tripper. Late Oct 2022 (about 2 weeks after delivery) I thought I would try the awesome Fast DC CCS charging, it totally failed. It remained that way for 7 months, till I switch dealers and tried another dealer service department, they diagnosed the issue was a simple bent pin on the DC Temperature senor caused the Charging module to fail on DC charging, the original service depart did replace that but never checked why it failed and 7 service visits that required a 80 minute ferry ride each time (at my expense), I was fed-up. Needless to say not only did my car have this issue, but many, many CCS chargers in Canada were failing miserably and no longer made long distance road trips possible using the CCS charging networks that are available. So I bought a Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD and just finished a 4000KM road trip and it was like night and day different then using the CCS chargers, wow. Now I see Jim Farley and Elon have signed an agreement to move FORD way from the rather problematic CCS charging standard to the Tesla NACS plug, good on them as CCS charging is just going down the toilet in North America. I will be watching for your experiences in Thailand, but I would not be a Bankok resident, I would try country living! Best of luck!

Alex, it's not just the ID4, as you probably know. I have the ID3 P-Pro that isn't a 1st edition, but was built soon afterwards and, although it is a very much more sprightly car than your ID4, it has similar software faults, although you've had a particularly poor one, I think. Everything you've mentioned, bar the entire breakdowns, I've had. Voice Commands totally suck still. OTA updates don't happen. The last one I had was when there was a 12V battery recall. I had V2.3 then, and guess what? I still have V2.3 because the service dealer feared he might brick the car. Oh, and both headlights fogged up [condensation inside - seals gone]. So what did they do? They said to leave it for a while. And of course the warmer weather came along and the issue went away, as I knew it would when he suggested it [I ain't stupid buddy, or maybe I am for having this car]. Of course the problem is still there, just waiting for next winter. But the lease is up at the end of March 2024. That said, my ID3 P-Pro is a nice, comfy, very nippy [OK not Tesla nippy] good car. But it's spoiled every trip when I have to interact with its software. And really it's only made bearable by Android Auto, which shouldn't have to be the case. Finally, the phone App has gone from "this totally stinks" to "there's an odd unpleasant aroma around here" when I use it. That's probably the biggest improvement from the car overall in 2+ years.

As for the tire pressure issue. I have a PoleStar 2 (love it). Anyway, I was driving one day and ran over something that caused my tire to rapidly deflate and fail. I brought it in to a tire center to get a replacement. When discussing the tire I asked about the tire pressure monitor. They explained that are 2 methods. One to to measure tire pressure. Its more expensive than method 2. Method 2 is to count rotations and use it to determine if you are going faster or slower than you would if the tire was at optimal pressure. These systems will tell you to wait until the tires are warm before reporting. The ID4 may use method 2 and as a result the system doesn't know which tire has too low/high pressure.

Alex, I have been following your channel for a few years. After buying a model 3 in 2021, we decided to buy another EV. Being a Tesla owner, the 2nd EV was not going to be a Tesla. Living in California made it a challenge to buy an EV at a reasonable price. Before deciding on EVs I tried buying a Toyota RAV4 prime prime for a few years but could never find one that wasn't marked up $10K over the MSRP. I ended up ordering a Subaru, VW and Nissan EV. With the ID4 coming out of Tennessee, it was the lowest cost with the tax break. The Subaru was too much like a Toyota EV with its low range and high price. Nissan did not communicate with me during the one year wait. After seeing your reviews on the ID4 and finding out VW removed the heat pump as well getting cheap on parts, I cancelled my order the week the car came in. Cancelled the Subaru EV too. Nissan the company sucked but the Ariya was pretty nice. The software sucks but the car drives like nice car and not the rollercoaster M3 ride. Your videos were very helpful in my decision in ending up with the Nissan Ariya. I've been to Thailand a few times and love the people and its culture. Good luck to you on the next chapter in your life and channel!!!

The tech told me he was working on getting it to communicate with the charger and basically said he wasn't having much luck. I mentioned the tricks I had learned to get my Spark to charge, and said I thought this particular charger seemed like it could use a software update, compared to others I had used. The '23 model fixes all the issues the first year has. The design annoyances are still there though.

VW recently fired the entire management of the software division. Maybe something finally changes now.

I do not own an ID.4 But when you spoke about tire pressure warnings? I immediately thought of my C-Max Hybrid which has a low tire pressure warning system. The only real problem is, it does nt identify 'which' tire is low or if it's the front tires or the rear tires. So, it's off to the races by adding air to all 4 tires at which point the TP warming onkly goes off after a half mile of driving. Harrumph! Other issues (maybe you have the same in the VW) the touch screen started acting up. If I touch a preprogrammed radio station, it would not recognize my touch. When I touched it a 2nd time, it recognized that touch in addition to the 1st touch and then proceeded to set my current station to the radial of the station I wanted to switch too. Of course while this was occurring, voice control was completely useless since it responded just like the touch screen. Evidently it was a failure of some control module which got replaced and everything worked fine except, now, on occasion, when I start the car, the radio (which we leave on a preset station) will switch over to AM fr some unknown reason. Sometimes, the convenience of electronics that go bad makes one miss the real convenience of the old fashioned mechanical methods of listening to the radio? Lastly, home charging. For whatever reasons, my wall charger now likes to trip my GFI breaker and then its a question of 'which GFI got tripped'? On one occasion, I knew pretty quick because the garage door opener stopped working. On another occsion, I hadn't know it tripped until the meats in a freezer started stinking up the garage. The dealership says everything is ok but, for safety's sake nd the fact that breakers keep getting tripped, I either don't charge the car or add a brand new circuit specifically for the car. For financial reasons, I did NOT choose the latter.
