VW Golf v Ford Focus v Honda Civic v Astra review

Check out Mat's preferred trim & engine for each car: bit.ly/Mats-Engine-Choice
We’ve pulled together four of the best small cars money can buy, and Mat’s about to find out which one is right for you!
It’s fair to say all four of these cars are pretty recognisable. We’ve got the world-famous VW Golf, the Ford Focus, the Vauxhall (Opel) Astra, and the Honda Civic. The question is, in a crowded small car market, which one stands out the most?
For example, when it comes to price, all four are evenly matched. Entry-level versions of each car start from around £25,000 for the Golf and Astra, rising to £27,000 & £29,000 for the Focus and Civic respectively. Additionally, all the cars here (apart from the Civic) come with a whole host of engine and trim options to choose from.
Thankfully, Mat’s here to give all four cars a full in-depth review! He'll be checking out their designs, practicality, interiors, and what they’re like to drive. And in each case, he’ll compare them all against each other before deciding on an overall winner!
The question is, which one is your favourite? Let us know in the COMMENTS!

It is winning awards left right and centre for car of the year awards. If anyone is thinking of a new car- Definately go for the Civic Advance model. My issue with this comparison is size - the civic is about 20cm longer than the other three; put half of that extra in the passenger compartment and the other half in the boot, and you obviously get more space in both. Otherwise great review!

Focus by far the best looking. @Matt, when you tested the Focus a month ago, you said it was good looking, you change your opinion that fast?
Matt is stating what we all already knew. Whether it is base models or top trims the Civic is superior to the competition. At Type R level rest assured there's no Focus RS, no Golf R, no GR Corolla, no Elantra N that comes close to the level of engineering. The Civic is the undisputed king hands down.
I'm pretty sure the Focus has a false floor option which solves everything you nagged about when reviewing the trunk. The old one absolutely did, there's no reason for this one to not have it as well. That would make it more practical than the Golf and potentially in second place overall, since it looks like you're putting a decent emphasis on practicality (rightfully so).
Probably focus still best driving car and the exterior could look better in a different colour. But the honda's engine and interior look promising even if it is sacrificing the height for the passengers space traveling in the back. Still a lot of praise on the exterior look which is not far away than a Laguna.
WOW. I´m so surprised of this test. I´m really searching for a car right now, didn´t consider the Honda, but now i will. Very interesting car.! And for sure more reliable than the german.

I'd pick the civic. Astra to me just looks a bit cheap inside. Like the previous generation it seems it's good but not class leading which means in a few years it'll be an also ran. I currently drive a golf mark 7 estate and to be honest I much prefer the interior layout to the 8. Although that looks more stylish. But given the choice between these and my car if prices were the same, I think I'd pick the civic. The 1.5tsi DSG combo in the golf is good and offers punchy performance. Very strong long distance economy (usually over 50, on occasion 60). But it's a bit thirsty in congested traffic with mpg down in the 30s for this. I could imagine the hybrid in the civic will seriously improve this whilst also having more power. I like the civics interior as well. Now just make an estate and it could be my next car! I'd not discount the focus either. Not least on a cold day with their standard heated front screens. But I'd need it for substantially less money than the civic.
I think the focus has the best exterior. Focus looks dope
Would that Astra be a good first day same with new 308 from Peugeot

In the new one the suspension is much softer and there is much less feedback from that steering and less feedback on the brakes, the extra 100-150 kg weight is also a possible cause of this. And oil change every 10k kms. That's a bit strange too. Acceleration is somewhat better in the hybrid, but only in numbers, in the MT 10th gen 1.5T you feel the acceleration much more. Overall I liked it (better interior, better quality, better infotainment system), but I personally like the 10th gen more when it's about curvy roads. It's also a bit odd that above 100-110km/h on highway the 10th gen 1.5T consumes LESS (yes, less) gasoline than the new hybrid. In city and stop and go traffic the new one clearly wins.

Call me a slow driver, but I’ve had a 75 plus mpg in my mark 9, love it. This new Civic seems amazing……Honda for life.

@@itsallrobbish I bought the Advance in October, and it's superb. Price is slightly higher now, but I'm sure it's justifiable given the size, build, tech of the car. The only criticism is the slightly over zealous steering wheel sensors which monitor your inputs and flash up regular warnings even when it's not driving itself.
Would've loved to see Peugot 308 here as well

@@Spilkes1 okay then. So Skoda = seat = Volkswagen? Nissan = Renault = Mitsubishi? Just because you happen to know Opel and Peugeot are in the same multinational automotive manufacturing company Stellantis doesn’t mean they’re the exact same car and you can’t compare them.

Its the same car as the astra 🤣
I definitely think this Civic is worth comparing with more serious competitors. It's just miles away in every aspect, although it shares the same car segment as the Golf or Focus.
I like it, I had the chance to drive one last week & oh boy is it better the Focus/Golf/ 308 & Civic. It hugs the road & the feeling of a quality product is certainly present. Oh boy have Opel/Vauxhall upped the game with the new Astra, plus the kit you get with it in the mid & low level offers as standard puts the competition to shame. The steering wheel is well designed & balanced to give excellent road feel & the flat bottom helps a lot in tight turns when on other cars you have to replace where your hands are positioned the Astra u can still turn the wheel & It keeps the workload down to a minimum, the front & rear plus the 360 cameras are Uber clear, the 2 huge touchscreen displays are also excellent. The climate & vents r great plus the difference in mood lighting is also a nice touch. The HUD & road sign recognition works well & the cruise control do a great job plus u just lock on to the car in front including the lane assist keeps u centred without the usual bouncing from left to right that happens in other vehicles. All I can say is great job 👏
Nice to hear that the new Civic gen 11 is the best. I have the Gen10 Hatchback (I love it) and the new Type-R is on my radar.
Love these kinds of affordable comparisons!

For UK viewers, The Astra as it's built in Cheshire
The interiors of these modern cars are so advanced, amazing how good and luxurious standard cars are nowadays.
small but comes with a big price, especially the european brands compared to the asia market. i remember the opel corse 2-3 years ago atleast where i live started from 15900eu and now it reached 19900eu while around the same price i can buy a hyundai i30 fastback.

Opel corsa 1.0lt 19900 euros Hyundai i30 fastback 1.0lt 19690 euros both are base models with the hyundai offering more features than the opel. Those are the official prices in greece. The fact that hyundai that makes their cars outside of europe can sell them cheaper than germany shows how much impact the energy crisis has done. The fastback you checked is probably the 265 PS model that is also their sportline which makes sense of why it costs that much.

basic versions were cut due to covid so only versions with better features were sold which naturally raises the minimum price but you also get more features for that new minimum price.
Honda simply knows what they're doing 👍🏻
I purchased the Focus. I've had it for 4 months now and it is a lovely car. Looks are subjective of course but I think its rather handsome. It is a joy to drive. The combination of the 1 litre engine, the mild hybrid set up, and the 7 speed auto all gels together to give a seamless driving experience. Fuel consumption is excellent, which is in the mid 50s. The sync 4 infotainment is just brilliant and having a lot of the controls built into it makes for a very attractive and simplistic looking cabin. A great all round car.

The focus he has on test here has the older style automatic, you can tell as is has a traditional lever rather than a dial.. kinda unfair on the focus.. most mk4s have the 7 speed auto.

@@foxxyblieu9 Isn't it the other way round? The gearbox dial being the slightly older 8 speed. I may be wrong however. I thought the 7 speed was actually the newer of the two gearboxes currently fitted to the Mk 4.5

@@foxxyblieu9 Thanks, that's interesting. The 6 speed auto I had in my previous 9 year old Fiesta was faultless. The "7" speed gear ratios in my focus definitely change quicker and are closer together. Currently the average fuel consumption is showing 54.5 which is really good and that is with the mild hybrid system.
The Golf was a small car in '74. I could sit ok in it but that was it. As was the first Civic.
