VW Golf MK1 restoration ep.10 - RADIATOR

Ойын-сауық

On this episode I restore a 30 year old VW GOLF MK1 radiator. All of the parts are sandblasted. For a clean engine bay look, I shaved the old radiator fan mount and adapted a modern universal fan.
The radiator was polished with a generic polishing paste.

That brown work pad looks like the board you slip in front of the radiator when it's deep minus driving temperature. Perhaps a Transylvanian winter.

In the US, we have "coil cleaner" we use to clean the ac coils. Its a bubbly kind of cleaner. We have two: a very very strong one we rinse off with water and a not so strong one we don't rinse. The bubbles get in between the aluminum fins and lift the dirt out. I would suggest the no rinse one on your radiator to clean between the aluminum fins. I watch you every chance I get and have been incredibly impressed with how you can take an oily greasy dirty part and make it look new. As soon as I can find a low rust 1970's body, I am going to repeat your process. Thanks for what you do!

Thank you for your advise :D ! I try my best but it's not easy ... I have so little time for these videos. I'm runing a business which has nothing to do with cars or tools. This is why I make mistakes, no time to do everything with maximum effort. Really happy that you want to start working on a MK1 golf. They are some awesome cars !

Maybe I missed it, but did you test it for leaks before all the work?

it was tested when it was on the car. With hot coolant there were no leaks :)
