    I have spent some considerable time researching the GTE. After watching your review with interest it is the best I have seen so far. As far as the MPG figures go, well its really a matter of how much you use the electric power. You make this perfectly clear. As I intend to use the car on short trips I will be signing up for one next week. Thanks again. P.S. Great jumper...

I have a 30 miles commute and I would love to do it in total electric (see my problem) I have now relaxed because as you show the petrol engine is better for certain parts of every journey - even a short commute.

    Great review, I have a GTD currently that’s due to go back and am considering getting the GTE as my journey to work is only 10 miles round trip, however at least once a month possibly twice a month I have to do a weekend trip back home to Cumbria of 110 miles each way and was wondering what the MPG is likely to be on this? Currently I get 55mpg on this journey and i’m Not driving like a ‘granny’ if you know what I mean. Also for the longer distance journey what mode would be best to drive it in?

  • @Judoman7

    @Judoman7

    6 жыл бұрын

    deborah dockwray I’m pretty confident it would work out for you. If you can charge it at both ends of the route mpg may even exceed GTD figures. My technique on the motorway is use petrol when in 6th gear only (most efficient) and make sure you use up all your electric before reaching your destination. If you’re going downhill switch to all electric, there’s less mechanical resistance then. I also save a couple of miles worth of electric just incase you’re sat in traffic or have to do a slow bit.

    Ok people getting upset by the claimed range, it's like the volt were it calculates distance traveled by x amount of fuel used on trip plus what's left in the tank, since he only travels 9 miles a day he basically stays in ev mode 99% of the time hence way it calculates it is artificially high so unless he guns it or the engine turns on to stop the petrol going stale or a really cold morning he stays on electrons personally fuel efficiency should be calculated based on there being no ev available to stop misleading however if you spend your life with a 100 mile range a day an ev will be better but it's a good stepping stone for people who don't think evs are right for them, and like it or not we are going to see an increase in plug in cars to meet zero emission zones that will come in force by 2020 and play within the rules like diesel gate did to show they are not so responsible for the air pollution. As a city runner I like this car it's a Prius prime / volt wannabe that doesn't look it's from the far side of the moon

    Thanks for posting, good review. I'd be interested to know how much the range is compromised in winter from a cold start when you have the heater, heated seats, headlights and window demisters all going at the same time. My commute is around 10 miles each way on a mixture of country roads and town driving, so I;m guessing that I'd be on the limit of electric only driving. Also, have you noticed much in the way of difference in tyre ware considering the cars additional weight?

  • @Judoman7

    @Judoman7

    6 жыл бұрын

    Peter Morley with all the electric gizmos on and cold the range drops a lot, don't quote me but to something like 16 miles. But the car has a neat tool for that, you can set it up to be readily demisted and warmed up for a set time, for me I have it ready for half 7 and it just sets itself up using mains power while plugged in. If you can charge at work I'm sure you'd be fine, work and back on one charge esp. in winter would be iffy. I've been through a set of tyres at 30k but I'm pretty lead footed haha. Can't say if it's the weight or the power responsible though.

    Brilliant, I think the fact that I could prime the car to be defrosted and ready to go on a cold winters morning might just sway me in favour of PHEV over a petrol or diesel. Now if I can just sort out charging at work, then its a no brainer. Many thanks.

    MrGolf33 cool, enjoy it! I'm not sure, I don't use the app. I think it's to do with it not constantly drawing power, or so it uses off-peak energy. A simple honest review. I do have a question though as I am thinking of getting a GTE . My commute is 12 miles one way, but its 60mph for 5 miles and 70+ mph for 6 miles. The remaining 1 mile is 40mph. I was just wondering if the GTE remains in fully electric mode even at 70+ mph? Charging at work is not a problem but I would like a car to ride at 70+mph in fully electric mode without cutting into the hybrid mode. If not I think I will have to get a diesel.

I currently drive an Audi A3 1.6TDI, which is a company car. Paying £190 Tax a month and get about 63MPG out of it (74MPG max - hyper mile-ing). For me the Golf GTE still makes sense, as the Tax is almost half of a GTD. I can trickle charge it at home over night, and Pod Point charge it at work... Even if I only use the E mode for A roads or when I'm stuck in the traffic from J1 of M5 to J10 of the M6, its still got to be worth it.. Any thoughts ??

Am I right in thinking that if you set off in EV mode and need to overtake something, that without selecting another mode, just by flooring the throttle the car automatically starts the petrol engine and effectively puts you in GTE mode. Whilst this is very reassuring and makes a safe overtake possible, does it concern you that a stone cold engine is hitting 6000rpm only seconds after bursting into life. There hardly seems time to get to normal oil pressure not to mention normal operating temperatures. It seems to me to be a surefire way to end up with a wrecked or prematurely worn engine. Unless VW has addressed this with some suitably clever system they don't publicise. I found myself uttering mumbled expletives after reading the comment from the guy that basically called you a liar over your 192 mpg claim. Yes, you may be charging the car every night and incurring electricity costs but in my book if your gallon of petrol takes you 192 miles, then you are getting 192 mpg, simple fact !

    Barry Naylor it uses both if you press hard enough, the pedal has a 'kickdown' for the last 10% of travel, this uses both. I did think about that but it's definitely more a question for VW than me haha. Ahaha, thanks for the support. He had a good point but I thought the way I phrased it is best for comparing with other cars, certainly with other hybrids.

    Gear'Ed Thanks for your reply, I wasn't really expecting you to have a definitive answer but was wondering if the problem had crossed your mind as well. One other question as I've never driven a DSG equipped car. If you are running in battery hold mode ( petrol engine only ) using the DSG in manual, if you forget you're in manual and come to a stop in 6th, is the system clever enough to realise and revert back to automatic ?

    Best and honest review! I seriously considering to get 2nd hand one. What about reliability did you had any major problems? Also as it will suit my daily needs what about long European trip twice a year? How it will work out if you have to drive almost 2k miles in one go? Apparently mpg drops below 40 on long trips when battery is empty?

    I just bought a 2015 GTE with 100K Kms and I drove from the Amesterdam to Portugal with an average of 5,8 litres/100 Km without any charging on the way. Now I drive 20 km per day on Full electric and the Petrol is 1.1 litre/100 Km and 22 Kw/100 Km electric with normal driving not fast acelerations but with big slopes in the town. Beautifull and Excelent Driving car and very fast overtakes.

    Beg to differ. The tires or wheels you need on e-cars and hybrids have a different resistance in lack of a better word. Also, hybrids are heavy cars and that adds to equation as well. In general the "silent" e-car doesn't exist cause as you say all the ambient noise becomes much more apparent as well, making the experience much more noisy than newer combustion cars cause the subtle humming from an engine masks the ambient noise. All in all a more pleasant ride in combustion cars if you ask me. That goes for comfort as well due to the odd weight distribution on hybrids and the added weight on battery vehicles in general. You mentioned that yourself. It doesn't feel very agile compared to conventional Golf models. I had a chat with a local VW dealer and I asked why they had such a large amount of used GTE's in store. "People get range anxiety" he said. They can't live with the low e-range and that kinda ruins the whole experience and the main purpose of buying this car. I could choose from heaps of GTE's and most of them hadn't gone more than 12-16.000 km. That is barely one year of driving on average. There was endless rows of used GTE's just waiting to be re-sold. I think that paints a pretty honest picture of the whole hybrid situation. Only e-car that can hold a candle to combustion cars is the Tesla, but that costs more than 10 years worth of fuel so your better of just buying a nice combustion car then. This e-car thing isn't working out too well quite yet.
