Welcome to our KZread channel, where we take you on a journey of automotive restoration! In this episode we present the restoration process of the Bus's front bumper, as well as some essential bodywork on the side panel.
Join us as we embark on this exciting adventure of reviving a true classic. We start by carefully assessing the front bumper's condition, which has suffered from years of wear and tear. The first step involves meticulously removing layers of old paint to reveal the underlying rust that has plagued this vintage beauty.
With the rust exposed, we dive into the restoration process. Watch as we use Ospho and wire wheels to effectively eliminate the rust, ensuring a solid foundation for the next steps. We showcase the intricate process of welding in carefully crafted metal patches, meticulously recreating the bumper's original structure.
Moving on to the side panel of the VW Bus, we address imperfections with the application of Duraglas.

@@Vangabonders why are there 2 holes on each side of the bumper to install it. My bumper on mine just has 2 hole on each side and is threaded 1 on each side as well. there are 2 holes on each side but they are different sizes and not threaded like the mounting bolt that holds the front bumper on.
Good job my friend !

Ive got 2 sandblasters but id rather have a Malloy helping out 😉😜 great work on the bumper if your ever lazy with welding try putting a piece of copper behind the hole and fill it with weld 😎 works well👍🏽
Great video on the bumper refurbish. I agree modern day paint stripper is not as good as the old stuff. And I agree Brandons bus makes amazing videos. Yours are just as good. I enjoy your content
Another awesome episode love the progress
So glad you saved that bumper as it made a great video buddy 😎🏴

Just watching these. Excellent work my man! Well done. I know you cringe at comments about sand blasting but, it depends on your value of your time? I am happy to pay to get it done as the finish really cleans out he rust and leave it with a nice matte surface, perfect for ADHESION! 😂 she’s going to be a beauty when done. Well done so far. Mark.
That looks great!
You do great work, thanks for sharing
I went though a similar level of deconstruction/construction as you, even more I would say since the only orginal metal left was the roof. Im super impressed with your fab skills, I ending up buying all my bad parts and panels , I just didnt want to take the time to fab something. Great job, love your content and approach to your project, Keep up the good work

Awesome job and great a attention to detail. Kee it up!!
I think that bumper would look great left in the metal color with a clear coat. I know that wouldn’t would be in keeping with maintaining the bus in original coloring, but just a suggestion.
Strong work! #feedthealgorithmbeast

Your bumper seemed to be fairly easy to bend back in shape compared to my 1972 van bumper (last year of the early bay bumpers). I am trying to do the same thing with mine and it feels like it's 1/4 inch plating. Glad to see you stuck with the original bumper as the replacements ones (IMO) are crap. It turned out real good!!! Thanks!!!

Charming 🙏🏻
Iam repairing a 1996 dodge dakota 4x4 that slipped into reverse while idling ,well it ran down hill and went about 100 yards and jumped my neighbors driveway then hit a pine tree well it kinda bent the passenger side rear quarter panel in after hitting the bumper..if it was a newer truck it would of really been major but this truck is made of 16 guage steel really tough..I took a chain a tractor and pulled out alot of it. But I very never done Body work before. I love this truck ext cab 4x4 318 shell on back .but anyway love your channel you've really explained how your doing your vw bus and it seems like man you show me exactly what I need to do so thankyou
Nice work
Nice work buddy, I like your realistic approach to ordinary people and the sort of tools that may actually have available. Compared to me you are still a very young man but already seem wise. Best regards .

I'm not a body man but I've always seen the bondo applied right on the prepped steel body not over primer. Good work on the bumper.

Some old schoolers swear you can only use filler over bare metal but with epoxy primers now days a lot of people choose to do filler over primer as it seals the metal from potential moisture when applied correctly

Perhaps some day when I can do this full time 😊
In the UK all the paint strip gel products are no longer any good so i wrap parts in old towels or t-shirts then wet them with gun wash or paint thinner before wrapping then in food wrap/ cling film after a few days the paint is blistered and falling off.

That is one classic way of getting it done!
I can paint and panel beat to concours standard, and hence my ability is far beyond what is shown in these videos (and GET F-CKED anyone that says I have a 'big head' - HA - I am just trying to explain) - and I am REALLY enjoying watching a 'backyarder' 'blunder' his way through (and NO disrespect intended) and learn and GREAT to see you girl out there sharing the experience with you - this is refreshing watching you two learn as you go and wish I could have provided some assistance (HA - although that would have ruined the making of these fun videos). TIP - ALWAYS cover up from the UV of a MIG (ask me how I know) - and when using epoxy etc in a home garage - AWLAYS seal up any gap that may take the fumes inside the house - I am a bit concerned for you and your girl re the sometimes lack of PPE. HA - and you are correct re the somewhat difficult task of sanding the fibreglass type fillers, but they can be very effective when used for a fit purpose (instead of lead in one one example). WEAR suitable gloves, and try and keep your hands off the bare steel. And I almost forgot - NEVER EVER USE SAND for blasting - silicosis of the lungs can occur - HA - and NEVER use beach sand (as I have seen some tight arses use = to their regret - ONLY an true numbnut would use beach sand - HA). The term "...sand blast..." should be deleted from everyone's mind - and use the term 'media blasting' - AND with the correct media - NOT sand - HA. EVERYONE - USE COOPERS STRIPPER from NEW ZEALAND - you will NEVER look back. (NO - I have nothing to do with their business) CHEERS from AUSTRALIA.
Jasco should be on for about 10-15 min, scrape rinse & repeat.
