thanks for doing that!, really good to see them side by side. I currently drive an e-Golf, so it's great to see the next stage :) At first I thought the 'eyes' were a bit of a gimmick, but now hearing about the autonomous mode having a personality it makes sense and I can see would make people want to buy this. I glad to see VW embrace the grill-less front end again, especially on an EV which doesn't need them :) I just hope the final version is a 5 seater, 4 is a BIG no no at least in the US.

For an enthusiast like me, this video was a journey thru time. A tour de force in the Volkswagen's visions of what can define a great car. The presence of the head of the design department in the entire VW group is a proof of the prestige of Autogefühl. The VW ID is a jewel of design, function and space. It paves the way of the future and I hope can see it happening... Excelent work, Thomas.

I never understand why the finished cars are so wildly different to the concept cars. It’s an exercise in futility - “let’s build something we will never actually make! Look at what you’ll never get!”

Hi Thomas, thank you for the interesting and brief review! Before I start, I like to mention that when this KZread started to play, I thought you are in a painting! I liked the background wall color behind you mixed with the floor color below you, together in a way I couldn't notice where the wall & floor intersect! Sure I like the beetle and its model through the years, and the latest beetle is really great! Also the Golf, even it was a revolution in the 70's, we could notice that year after year it was getting better and sure the latest Golf got the most beautiful shape! I remember one quote for VW I read it since around 15 years in one of their Golf brochures "The aim of design is not doing something different but doing something better", now! Regarding the VW I.D, for me, in general it looks great, I only didn't like the A1 & A2 pillars, they look a very old design solution like a van or a bus, I don't know! Since Mr. Klaus mentioned that this car will face further little changes until its final setting, I advise you to look after these two A1 & A2 pillars, try to hide them both or keep only one pillar "PLEASE"! Beside that, I don't have any other negative feeling towards it, I believe it is a very successful shape and can be improved successfully year after year through its future! :)

Thank you Thomas. The 1958 Beetle is my favorite. How will we transition from autonomous to non-autonomous driving in the future? In one fell swoop or will it be something that occurs gradually? One other thing: The 2017 Passat R-Line in the US offers great features for a very reasonable price. Would it be possible for you to review that car?

"...in this unique package." Interesting term, "package." The 2017 Golf Family VW Brochure describes the Golf R as follows: "Everything in the Golf R is dialed up. It creates a total package that's expertly crafted, sophisticated and technologically advanced." I've reflected on this video over the past few weeks and I"m not sure that I fully grasp the strategy, planning and execution that goes into marketing a vehicle's "package" and why. Is a car manufacturer's model the package, or is it the trim level? Is it more than that? What about available features such as an optional lighting package or driver's assistance features? How does that impact the package? Any thoughts?

Good to hear comments from the head of VW design - Thanks Thomas. At 6:25 you said that earlier he had been responsible for interior design at VW - I wonder whether he had been involved in the superb clean interior design, and big step up in quality, of the 1996 Passat B5 interior and 1997 Golf Mk4. Anyway, good interview.

I enjoyed watching it but you could have done better. Who was this film for? On one hand you don't mention such basic things like the trunk space behind the rear seats of the Beetle. On the other hand, if this material was meant for people with more knowledge, it's a pity you did not ask more sophisticated questions about design to such a well-informed person.

Either electric or hybrid! But I think electric is a more practical solution, for some reason or another! Batteries on the floor pan, electric motor at the back! Yeah, this can be done too! And then play the air-cooled boxer's soundtrack from the speakers! ;-P

Why was the beetle has a bug shape because it resemble the egg shell which known for its rigidity provide by its round shape despite its thin sheetmetals. It is give best compromise for strenght and lightness. The golf which is designed by italian, which is a trend in 70''s. It obvious the metal technology has become better, and you don''t have to have rounded body to provide strenght. Moreover the angular shape of the golf give it spacey room despite the compact size. Much better than the cramped beetle.

The notion of the "autonomous car" is both worryingly utopian and dystopian at the same time. Moreover, in spite of all the technological advances that have been made since the days of the original Beetle or Golf, Volkswagen - or any other car maker for that matter - really need to remind themselves that cars are meant to be driven by humans, and not humans being driven by cars.

It was great to hear a few views and opinions from such an important person from within this large global company that employs lots of people, being interviewed in a courteous, sensible and polite manner. (Oh, and as you say, he spoke perfectly good English - better than me, I'm sure).
