VVT Solenoid Replacement Third Generation Honda Odyssey

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video I'll show you how to change a VVT solenoid on a third generation Honda Odyssey 3.5L. The particular Odyssey featured in the video is a 2005 touring. I believe this procedure is similar for all third generation Odysseys, but do verify your repair manual to confirm this. I've done a little digging and there may be some differences. By the way, your dealer may refer to this part as the "spool valve".
The VVT solenoid is a very common source of oil leaks for this vehicle. Usually the gasket that goes between the solenoid and the cylinder head leaks, but also the gasket that goes between the two halve of the assembly will leak too. This gasket, unfortunately, when I made this video was not available. IT IS AVAILABLE NOW THOUGH. SO, YOU DON'T HAVE TO REPLACE THE WHOLE THING. If decide to replace the solenoid any way you can expect to spend $200-$600.
Here is a link to the website that sells this gasket for the inside of the valve. Please speak to a parts pro to confirm this part is correct for your vehicle.
www.napaonline.com/en/p/NDP91...
Here is a link to a video that can give you some understanding of how to take this thing apart to replace that gasket. In this video, I did not replace the gasket but the video does show how to take it apart.
Here is that link: • Resealing my VVT Solen...
Note: I would recommend disconnecting the battery to prevent accidental start up. Disconnect the negative battery clamp. Be sure you have the radio code before disconnecting the battery.
As far as the scouring pads go. I use Scotch Brite scouring pads to clean mating surfaces. They are abrasive enough to clean oil sludge but will not tear up your metal. I would wash dishes with them for a week before using them for this application. It makes them a little more soft and pliable. (I work at a dealership and this is what we use. I have and all my co-workers have have great success using these) Something to watch out for... there is a chance that some of fibers of the scouring pad could come loose and cling to the surface of the metal. Be sure to clean all fibers off the gasket mating surface. Use a lint free rag soaked in brake clean.
Note: use scouring pads in on a metal surface close the the gasket mating area to insure the pad does not score the metal. If the pad scores the metal use a less abrasive scouring pad. Repeat test until desired result is achieved. (there are softer ones out there)
Here is a link to a video showing other methods of cleaning mating surfaces on engines and engine parts.
• My Best Method For Cle...
Here is a part number for the VVT solenoid. This is an Autozone part. (note: this is not an endorsement of autozone parts and I am not being paid to provide this information to you. Also, always verify proper part is ordered for your vehicle by providing your parts pro with all needed information such as VIN, Year, Make, Model and engine sized. Part comes with gasket)
Part# TS1145
And for the record when I mentioned that "some people call the vvt solenoid a vtec solenoid" I did not intend for anyone to interpret that to mean I said its a vtec solenoid. I'm only refering to the fact that as you look online and shop around that some places will call this a vtec solenoid.
If you want to replace the gasket instead of replacing the whole valve then I would call NAPA. I believe that they carry that part.
The plate that I removed on the back of the head under the VVT solenoid is call a "rear camshaft thrust cover". I believe the part# 91301-P8A-A00. Don't quote me on this. The parts dept is keeping this a secret. Always confirm correct parts with your parts pro.

Folks, FYI, If your vehicle has a leak from the gasket between the two halves of the VVT Solenoid you don't have to replace the whole thing anymore. When I made this video the part was not available. The part is available through NAPA now. I have a link in the description. Save $$$$

Hey, you mentioned proper torque on the VVT Valve but didn't mention the torque? I just replaced the gasket on mine and now is pouring oil worse than it was before. Was hopping it is a torque issue. Will you let me know the torque?

You need a manual for that. I don't have that spec, sir. I mentioned that a manual would be needed for this at around the 13 min mark. Be sure to check that plate back there too. They tend to leak also. Good luck to you.

Just did this repair (including the cam o-ring part) as well yesterday on our 2005 Odyssey. Your video was a huge help - many thanks for taking the time to put together the video! I was quoted $2,000 for the repair on a van worth $1,500!?!? Took me about 2 hrs working slowly and $35 in gaskets/o-ring. Hardest part was getting the cam cover off. I had to rotate for cover back & forth and then was able to pull it off. Thanks again!

Great vid. Super helpful and saved me big bucks. Like others here, I had a tough time with the camshaft thrust plate. That thing is a bear! It took me about an hour to get it off. The o-ring was broken when I did but I’m not sure if I broke it getting it off or if that was the source of my leak. One thing that was a “duh” for me was that the bolts holding the bracket are actually part of the plate. Once I realized that, the comments about twisting the plate made sense. At first I was thinking that the plate had to slide over the bolts. Maybe that will help someone else. Thanks again for all the videos you do.

Thanks for this video.I ordered the VVT gasket a few weeks ago and was preparing to complete today so I rewatched the video. Lucky I did because I ran out to get the cam O ring from the dealer ($3). The VVT gasket was very stiff but my leak was actually from the cam O ring.

Great Video, I will help everyone complete this repair with missing info. whats the part called below the spool valve? The part below the spool valve is called...... CAMSHAFT THRUST PLATE O RING......... Get it from Honda. Part# 91301-P8A-A00. Remove old o ring place new o ring in fresh oil then install on thrust plate them head to car. *****NOTE****** ONLY INSTALL BY PUSHING IN BY HAND THEN TIGHTEN. My car fought me every step. I had to back the part out 2 times to get the bolts to align up. What i did was put the plate loosely in camshaft opening and started only a few threads with the (2) 12 mm camshaft thrust plate housing bolts, like 5-10 threads then once aligned i pushed in by hand until it was firmly seated, then tighten with socket going from bottom to top even strokes. Then the torque specs i found were 18 ft pounds torque but i only used 12 ft lbs with crappy harbor freight torque wrench. didn't want to crack anything. How to remove the thrust plate? It seated in very very tight as it should be. Do not PRY. Take a long screwdriver and small hammer and work the 2 studs that hold the medal bracket. do not hit studs only the area around them, i tapped 3 times forwards and then 10 times counter clockwise, basically i annoyed it to death with the small hammer/long screw driver with VERY GENTLE TAPS until it broke free, just take your time.......................... it will come loose be patient............las How do i remove the inner spool valve gasket? Very easy. Use some pb blast if you have some then take the spool valve and place in a vice around the oil pressure sending nut upside down. now you can get the proper leverage to remove and replace the [3] 10 mm bolts holding together. i don't think anyone can loosen in lap by hand. the vise worked perfect. TORQUE SPECS????? i couldn't find them so i just used light force snugged up good and tight in an even pattern foe all (3) 10 mm spool valve body bolts but didn't kill it. Hope this helps someone else. this is my trial and errors in addition to this super great video. ps.... you can get both parts from napa, ebay. I purchased spool valve gasket from Honda $14.50 part# 15826-RDV-J01. I purchased the inner gasket on ebay for $17.00 only because 322 were sold with all great feedback. The napa kit is only $17.50 for both gaskets and the item number is in other comments below.

Changed the oil and filter, had the code cleared and all looks good so far. It was a little low on oil with about 20% life. If it holds good, it must be a system that's very sensitive to oil condition variations. Time will tell if I dodged a bullet.

Very clear and concise video, thank you! Our 07 Odyssey engine with 242K miles makes a grating sound after a cold start for about half a second, then runs smoothly and quietly. It sounds like the starter is still engaged, but I don’t think that’s it. The van had the timing belt tensioner replaced as part a recent timing belt service, so it’s not that. Could it be that the VVT solenoid is starting to fail?

Sure, glad to give an update. I took the van to my local independent Honda shop and they said it was a starter noise. They suggested I try to ignore it and did not think it would cause any significant issues. They sent me on my way without replacing the starter and with no charge for the diagnosis. It turns out they were right, and interestingly, the starter does not seem to be making the noise any more. In summary, the original engine itself remains quiet with no oil burning, and the same refined power as ever. Mileage currently sits at 287,000. Incidentally, I have a VCM engine and have not defeated that feature.

My question for you is did the gasket sealer fix the leak internally on the rear spool valve?

  • @BarboursAutoHelp

    @BarboursAutoHelp

    6 жыл бұрын

It was not leaking the last I checked. I have a video showing how I sealed it. It’s in the description. However, you can get both seals, including the internal seal for around $20. They are available now so there is now reason to “hack engineer” this. Also “ hack engineering” can really get you into trouble, $$$, especially when it comes to this part and the system it is a part of.

I moved the clamp far away. But the hose just doesn't move out a millimeter. I am afraid I can break the black plastic reservoir where it fits. Do you have any trick to get the hose out? Thank you very much!

Nice video in tight quarters... Besides the oil leak you discovered, was thee engine running normally without the check engine light illuminating or flashing? Our 2006's CE light comes on, then starts losing power and the CE light starts flashing when at freeway speeds (city driving seems normal). Pulling over, turning engine off and then restarting resets the light and it seems to run/drive okay for awhile. Shop thinks our VVT unit is pugged up due to driving 2k+ miles past the oil change alert with dirty oil. Thanks!

Excellent video, but I was only partially successful. I replaced the gaskets in the spool valve but still had a small leak so 'I went to replace the CAMSHAFT THRUST PLATE O RING Part# 91301-P8A-A00 and not only was it a PIA to get out, but a lot of oil came out of the engine when i took the plug out. After reinserting with new o-ring and tightening it down, it leaks even more now - steady stream! WTF? Either it didn't go in straight or I scored something in the process. Thinking I may need a whole new cap - just hoping I didn't score the engine side.

Very likely. If your oil is fresh and isn't low, it could be the VVT or Vtec. I had my code scanned and it came up as upper rear cyliner oil pressure switch, which is on the vvt assembly. The switch alone is at least $150-170. I decided look on ebay and got the whole vvt assembly with switch and solenoid for $140. Going to replace it in the next hour.
