The sound of these is incredible. I’d listen to it to lull myself to sleep as an ASMR video over rain on a roof anyday. So what is it about these engines that makes the howl? Is it intake design? Would be nice to think such a good job is done that in a crisis, some senior RAF people come knock the door and ask to borrow it for a bit.

It is the interaction of the intake shape and the volume of air flowing through them that causes the howl. It's like blowing over the top of a bottle. It occurs best at about 97% thrust not 100% which is why you hear a howl on the way up then it diminishes, and then as full power is cut the howl comes back briefly on the way down. I think one of the four engines on XL426 is producing less power than the others because one of them howls on full power, you can hear it in this video. Later Vulcans with the 300 series engines like XM655 howl differently or not at all (personally I hear a howl but opinions differ) because the intake is different and a higher volume of air flows through them due to the higher power of the 300 series.
