VSTEP NAUTIS Home - second look at physics on 3 different vessels

Ойындар

I try , badly to manoeuvre 3 very different vessels into a tight berth, and discover the physics and sim model is very good.

That car carrier maneuver was EXPENSIVE 😂😂

One thing you can do with azimuth on a tug is to split the controls. If you want to go sideways to port you take stb prop forward and 45°PS and PS prop stern and 45°stb. With this you just using the throttle to adjust how fast you want to go sideways.

Two of the ferries I used to work on have azimuth thrusters. On them when maneuvering into berths the skippers would typically angle them independently and have them so they were effectively working against each other so they could just reduce power on one side and increase on the other to swing the stern in the desired direction as well as give a bit finer control of speed when moving ahead or astern.

Bit late to the show here, some remarks on bringing the Supply vessel in. Firstly you have two Azimuths at the Stern and two Bow thrusters forward (not a bow and stern thruster). One of the most important things is to be aware of the difference in power that you have. A single Azimuth will have considerably more power than a single bow thruster. For this reason I would normally approach using only one Azimuth at a time when learning. Split the azimuths and have one set athwartships and one for fore/aft and steering(once you're more confident you can bias them against each other). Secondly you have a lot of inertia even though you have a lot of power. Exceeding 5 knots on approach is difficult/risky and i'd normally be down to 3 before making the turn and below 1knot at a ships length to position. Supply vessels will normally manoeuvre alongside from the aft controls to give a greater visibility of the ships length so if you do want to drive from a bridge view aft station will be easier. and so I would normally back in to that berth if allowed to choose which side alongside. You can turn on the spot with the available thrusters so given the space available you can stop the vessel and turn parallel before approaching, less challenging perhaps but safer if you are training. It was interesting to see the physics comparison and hear your views from your technical background. This really does remind me of the professional sims we train on right down to the graphics being not so great. I feel you would need some custom controllers to get the most out if it all. As a final comment, you really would need tugs for a car carrier due to the high windage. But in perfect weather you may be able to spring on to the quay by bringing the bow close enough to pass a spring line then coming ahead on that and using rudder to bring in the stern. I think anyway, never had to bring in a car carrier thankfully. Good video and glad to find your channel :)

Only professional in so far as I get paid to do it. There are many much more experienced ship handlers out there who could give better advice. But if you would like any information regarding driving supply vessels I am happy to help where I can. Good luck with the content you have an excellent and interesting channel. @@shipbuildingx

At the ~21 minute mark, your aft bow thruster is still on the bow. That's why it was holding your bow in to the pier while your stern was kicked out.

is it possible while making 9 knots to thrust engine astern (28:33)? a lot of stress for the engine because of the inertia leading to engine failure

Would be cool if the simulation was that good, no indication of engine RPM drop though.

Depends. Sure, a fixed pitch prop direct drive engine won't like it, but it's possible. CPP is fine though. You'll just cavitate and reduce your steering though.

Personally, I have much better immersion with a single screen HDR than with this so called "VR". Makes no sense to try and "immerse" yourself into a subpar environment. For your brain to be fooled enough, your eyes need to be getting a quality picture first and foremost. And by that I mean not as much the highly polygonal shapes or high definition textures, as the proper lighting. That means not just ray tracing, but also the screen itself being capable of emitting enough light for your brain to pass for a Sun glare - and also a wide pool of colors of a wide color gamut panel. People often say that ray tracing does not do much, but that's because they try viewing it on low dynamic range devices - including the "VR" screens. HDR comes first, then real time ray tracing... and only THEN there can be any talking about proper VR.

@@shipbuildingx Most of them being teenagers at best? I understand that from the simming point of view being able to judge the distances from stereoscopics is a huge asset, but that's not "immersion". Just give a try to a decent HDR panel and you'll see just how much you were missing all this time. Real world is full of colors and differing brightness values, while you are constraining yourself to indeed a "flat screen" in terms of just 256 levels of brightness between "mostly dark" and "paper white, but could also be the Sun itself" - not to mention really bleak colors that barely look different from one another.
