VSL SYNCHRON Concert D 274 | The Close Mics | Livestream Flashback

Музыка

There is no question that ‪@ViennaSymphonicLibrary‬ has produced some of the most detailed pianos libraries that are available. A recent viewer comment caused me to consider how the larger-than-life Synchron Stage could somehow be tamed to produce a more intimate, tighter, and closer listening experience.
Using the Synchron Steinway Concert D 274 we will focus on the CLOSE MICS and the results just might surprise you.
More information on the entire Synchron Pianos range can be found here:

    Wow! Your first setting, using just the Condenser mic and the Mid 1, is exactly what I use for a more intimate sound. It took me quite a while to arrive at that mix. My only problem with this piano is some resonances on some keys (that are a little difficult to EQ out) and some hard (woody) attacks on some of the keys as well. Mixing mics seems to foul things up too, I've noticed. Just seems better to use no more than two mics. Appreciate your review.

    Thanks so much, I am glad you enjoyed watching. I am so amazed at the SYNCHRON Piano series as a whole due to the amount of detail that goes into them. The new Synchron pianos player has a new Attack parameter that might help soften up some of the more pronounced dynamic sounds if you need to, it was introduced when they released the Synchron 280vc (one of my favorites). Thanks again for watching and the very kind support. All the best.

    thanks for this great video Simeon. I've just discovered your channel. Curious about your controller keyboard - do you have a preference for use with virtual (piano) instruments? I notice the SL88 in this video, but there are a few more in the background. thanks again!

    Gary, welcome. The SL88: Grand I am playing up front is I think is the best weighted controller for feel, features, and budget. It has such a dynamic feel, especially in the softer playing areas that allow it to be very expressive. The controller behind me is a Studiologic SL-880 (which is around 15 years old). It has been a great controller but has started to show some symptoms of wear and that was the reason to go to the SL88: Grand which was a gamechanger. Please let me know if you have any additional questions and I will do my best to help. All the best.

    In my opinion...what is hurting VSL sales the most is the complicated download process to get the demo and the USB dongle. Its keeping me and probably hundreds away from it. Not to mention possibly having to install another dedicated hard drive.

    Yes, and they along with Steinberg are in the process of moving away from the current eLicenser. VSL looks like they will transition to using iLok which can use machine as well as a USB dongle if desired. It should be interesting to see how this will develop.

    Mark, so sorry for your experience. As far as the eLicenser USB key you should be able to use your Steinberg key as I have two that I use for my VSL licenses. I would also see about reaching out to VSL support and relate your computer issues to them, who knows if they might be able to provide a fresh license code to use. It is worth a shot. Also since through the month of June they are having new 30 day trial licenses available on select pianos, I would check that out as well.

Now what do I do with my real Samick Parlor Grand? Gut it and use for my VPC-1 and install a couple transducers on the sound board??? VERY TEMPTING!!!

    You will find that VSL has some of the most detailed virtual oiano libraries available. I have done a lot of other piano library presentations on the channel that you can check out to hear other examples. I would say you would have better results using a dedicated MIDI controller such as one from Studiologic, I currently use their SL88: Grand and enjoy the experience of playing the virtual pianos with it. Be careful of some of the less expensive digital pianos as they have to maximize cost and many times that results in not having a very responsive keyboard action. Thanks so much for watching.

    Hello my friend, one question, which would be for you, the best vst steinway? synchron, embertone, hans zimmer piano by spitfire? which do you think sounds closer to a real steinway? Please, I would love to know your opinion. Many thanks and a strong hug.

  • @PraiseTracks

    @PraiseTracks

    Жыл бұрын

    Elected, between those three the Synchron Steinway would have to come out on top for me. The Hans Zimmer Steinway while amazing for me did not seem to pack a lot in the area of the big dynamic range as it is limited regarding the velocity layers that were sampled. I need to revisit the Embertone but found that for some reason it did not really grab me. One of the good things abou tVSL instruments is their 14-day return policy that allows you to experience the instrument on your own terms for a few days in order to get a one-on-one experience with it, that is truly the ultimate way of finding out if it would be the piano for you.

    I have a track I did with the White Grand 2 mKII but I wonder how it would sound with the D 274. It's contemporary so the White adds a certain flavor I like. However, it's only 16 layers so... it would be nice to have more layers. How many layers does the D 274 have? Thanks!

  • @PraiseTracks

    @PraiseTracks

    2 жыл бұрын

    My pleasure. So what I could find is that the D274 has around 100 velocity layers, which is an insane amount. The only differences in the light and full versions are the number of microphone positions. If you are looking for a more modern sound, I would suggest the newer Synchron 280 VC. It was recorded in the smaller Synchron stage so it has a slightly different character to it. The 280VC has become one of my favorite Synchron pianos, but the D274 fits into some arrangements better than others. I hope that helps. Thanks so much for the kind support.

    Not at all, Garritan in Studio One at Abbey Road is a phenomenal different piano, can’t compare the two. PLUS, these videos are a bit skewed because everything Simeon plays sounds amazing and I’m totally serious. Find Simeon’s video when he plays the Garritan and you will sit back and say “WHOA, I didn’t know the Garritan could sound like this”... especially when he gets going on Sound of Music. Do me that one favor and find that video. You’ll see!

    @@JPDC624 Haha, that's fair. I have the Garritan and love it, but I love the Steinway. I've been saying for years they should do a Steinway in Abbey Road. But this piano does a lot better in a smaller environment than I'd initially thought, and it has more sample layers that you can really hear. It's hard to beat the resonance of Abbey Road though for sure. It's a beautiful sounding studio

    Do you really need so much "ROOM" sound? In my opinion VSL pianos are too "wet". Not for my taste though they sound good and sustain is great. Thank you, Simeon for another great video.

  • @PraiseTracks

    @PraiseTracks

    2 жыл бұрын

    That is the result of the Synchron Stage, where sometimes you might need that larger than life sound but not all of the time. I think by using some of the closer mic positions you can get things a little more in control but it is like baking a cake, the room becomes imprinted in the samples themselves. 🎂 Now conversely their 280vc was recorded in Synchron Stage B which is a much smaller space and you get that tighter, more controlled sound. The Bösendorfer Upright and a few other pianos were recorded in that space. I could only imagine if they did a version of the Steinway and CFX in Studio B, not that would be amazing. Thanks so much for the kind support, it is much appreciated. Joyfully!🎹

    I own the full version of this but in retrospect it was a poor purchase. I find this library to be overpriced for the sound. The playability is amazing and the dynamic range and velocity curves are really what I think you’re paying for. However the simple sounds Themselves sound thin and tinny to my ears. CINESAMPLES piano in blue and cine piano sound more realistic for a less money IMO.

  • @headsman2023

    @headsman2023

    Respectfully, those are not simply "realistic" Those are signature instruments with some unique character- extremely warm and intimate That doesn't seem to be realistic, it's just closer to a personal recording And of course the playability on things like p.i.b is limited and not very versatile However, I've been in front of a 9 foot piano and i can say that the synchrons are more natural (still not the same as an acoustic piano - obviously not - a Steinway d is 200k$ and synchron Steinway is 560£- but this is the best one can get as a vst, it's even better than a lots of mid priced digital pianos)
