Thank you for this comparison of Bosendorfer pianos. Inspired by your review, I got the 30 day demo of Bosendorfer Upright (even though that I removed the previous trial of Imperial - mostly because of its size and potential cost).

I wasn’t sure what VSL Synchron piano I wanted at first. I wasn’t sure about this one at first either, but you’ve really shown off what the 280vc can do. This is next on my list, but hoping it will be on sale during Black Friday, because I need to update my computer first to run it well. Thank you for what you’ve done for all of us looking for real demos and thoughts on each instrument. I love your playing by the way, and you inspired me to play late last night, which I advanced a couple of my own pieces I’m writing. Keep up the excellent work. Feel free to expand into new territory with your channel as well. I heard Merriam music mention you in a video and that’s how I found your channel. 😀 Forgot to ask, what headphones do you use? I use the Sony mdr7506 but I might get a new pair.

Thanks for your comment! Welcome to the channel - the merriam music shoutout was so nice, because I know them for a long time and always enjoyed watching their videos. I use expensive headphones, Beyerdynamic T1, but I use them every day and the sound is great.

I like them all but my favorite of all the bosendorfers is the synchron imperial. It's quite amazing.

I like the close mic "Player" mode on Garritan, not the more popular "Classic" large hall (distant mic). I also reduce the resonance for a dryer sound. There has yet to be a Garritan "Player" (close mic) vs the VSL 280VC (close mic) video.

Your pianism conveys so much emotion... thanks for this comparison, Gamma, I'm really tempted to get one of the Synchron pianos, my first one, but I don't know towards which one I should go, I'm thinking about the new 280VC, sounds so versatile and limpid. Or maybe the usual Steinway...

It's one of the most difficult decisions!! Right now I'm looking for a new piece to upload. I'm trying them on the Imperial. I am just hugged by this sound rn and i feel so happy :O Try the return policy, is my recommendation. Buy both and return one (only do this is you really CAN keep only one - i wasn't strong enough and kept all!)

KH is still part of my life not only childhood ;) I think I just googled it and found it on scribd or some other weird site, it didn't take long

I'm in the middle of buying a digital piano. I have a grand piano in the living room, but I need something quiet for my room. I'm deciding if I should buy a nice digital piano like a Roland LX708 or a Casio GP510 and just used that for practice. Unfortunately, these pianos are quite expensive in the US. We are talking $5k USD. On the other hand, I'm wondering if I should just buy a stage piano slab, like a Roland FP90x, a Yamaha cp88, or a Kawai mp7s, which are around $2k and use the remaining funds to buy VSTs. My current laptop is an HP Core I7-10750H with 16GB of Ram. What would you recommend. I mostly play classical piano from all times periods.

Hey Gamma, I don't go to anyone else for an opinion on most plugins since I found your videos; great work on your content. I also noticed the new 280VC and I'm on the verge of buying it. I'm strictly a jazz solo player with some very occasional Scriabin. Since you have experience with the VSL pianos, which one (and I really mean one) would you recommend for my purposes? I have a hard time deciding from the demos alone (can't feel the playability) and I don't trust myself to drop a thousand to try them with the return policy either... :) I use the Garritan CFX at the moment and would like to get one of the VSL offerings to try. Hi, thanks for your comment. First of all, you're already very good with the Garritan, never forget that. I do believe VSL can be better in many cases but Garritan is, still, *very* good. VSL will not give you the craziest 3 levels above Garritan experience. Ok, so, first of all does it have to be a grand or would you also consider the Upright? Because the Upright can give some interesting character to Jazz pieces, notice the cool flavor you get with Blue Bossa in my recording. The next step, do you consider buying a full library or possibly a standard too? And then, I would actually pin the decision to exactly 2 pianos, buy them, try them out for 14 days, and return one. That seems really plausible in my eyes. I did something similar back then.

I only considered a full library, because with Garritan the ambient mic missing from the Lite version made a lot of difference: I'd expect something similar, perhaps in way of added character, from the second mics with VSL. If your demo only uses the standard lib. preset then I can save some money because it's way more than serviceable. The upright might indeed be the most interesting choice here since I already have a grand. I will take your advice and try out the upright and the new Bösendorfer. Thanks again!

I just visit their website. They have offer now but the price still very expensive for me. Is it worth to get full sample? Or it just enough to get standard sample? By the way what brand and model piano you play with?

My piano is a Kawai e200 atx3 hybrid upright. It works well with vst's. I would get the full if you plan to play seriously and more than a couple of days in a month. If you just 'mess around', the the standard should suffice. But, as with the garritan, the room mics are a significant contribution to the realism and atmosphere of the sound.

It seems from the demos of Merriam Pianos and Gamma 1734, best to just save up to buy VSL, or Garritan for most playing, unless of course if you want a character piano, then you can look elsewhere. he sampling quality of the VSL instruments is exceptional.

Meanwhile me using the normal Synthesia piano vst 🥴🥴🥴🥴

Great video! What are your thoughts on how it compares playing a real piano. Do you get the same touch and sensitivity. I’m struggling to jump between playing on an electric piano and then to a real grand. My technique slips when I’m on an electric so I was hoping that purchasing a midi plug-in will fill that gap! Thanks again for the extensive review and all the other videos!

I am getting desperate and I would really appreciate your help or rather comment on how to approach certain Synchron installation problem I am facing. I have already sent a request to VSL I want to download and install Bosendorfer Upright on my (faster) drive H but even though I am setting proper defaults (directories on H) in Vienna Assistant, there are files installed on drive C in both /programs and /users/public/Public Documents/VSL Content. I do not want anything to be installed on drive C and if I do not find a solution, I am never going to come close to VSL products. Thank you for your time. Michael

I have another, bigger problem (I also contacted support): my setup is Roland FP-90X that is connected to the computer with USB MIDI and the same USB cable carries back Digital Audio to FP-90X that plays the sound on its speakers (Roland DAC is used). I did not have problems with Pianoteq or Garritan CFX - they used Direct sound and Line (Roland) or Windows Audio (Exclusive Mode) Roland. Synchron can be setup with DirectSound Line (Roland Digital Piano) only. ASIO is not available for Roland. In this setup the delay between pressing a key and getting the sound is significant (regardless of Latency although 1024 is the best but still unacceptable). As I said before, Synchron setup is terrible! Garriton CFX has it own problem for me - I cannot reduce key return noise to zero. Pianoteq may not sound the best but at least it works and the installation (and size on the disk) make it the easiest VST to use (by a wide margin). I wrote all of this because I am wondering if you experienced any such installation issues.

You need to install the VST on C drive because that's where your DAW runs. You can install the sound files on any drive you like. H drive should not be your fastest drive. If your OS is running on a slow drive, you will get latency issues. Your OS, Windows will always be on C drive. It sounds like you need to install Windows on the drive called H drive and when you do that Windows will rename it to C drive. In disk manager they are listed by numbers. The letters can change. Installation of Windows on a new drive will wipe that drive clean, so you need to backup your files on H drive first.

Hi, thank you very much for that helpful video and nice playing! I own the Vienna Imperial (since eight years), the Upright and the 280VC. However, the 280VC plugin sounds synthetic to me. Is it possible to make it sound more "real" in terms of may be player position or such as this kind of recordings? kzread.info/dash/bejne/eIqiu9ODebK7ado.html. In my opinion there is a big difference in the realism of the sounds, even though I like the playability very much. Any hint would be appreciated. Thanks!

I think I can't help that much because I don't feel like it sounds synthetic as you say. The recording is good, it's good to hear how the original sounds. A lot of the sound is indeed by the microphone position as you also pointed out. The recording has a far more ambient sound than the player default in the VC. my guess is to only use Mid microphones and the room mics, and change the pannings a bit to arrive at the result from the video. It's interesting, I might also try to imitate that sound with my VC...
