In 1997 I turned 25, I was broke, sofa surfing,, had no job, I didn't even have a bank account. I lived in an unfurnished flat on the edge of Liverpool trying to stay out of trouble. I had a fridge a mattress and a Hitachi Superwoofer Cassette Player and 11 D&B tapes (among others) This mix kept my head together, kept me calm, optimistic and patient and confident that better days would come. These tunes took me to a great place without the drugs. Today, I live in Surrey, my kids are in Uni, I have my own small business, I am a published writer, a commissioned artist and a specist project manager. Hearing these tunes reminds me how far I have come, to stay humble, to never disconnect from the beauty of late 90s D&B and never forget the days I wished for all the things I have now. Not only does D&B take to a place of amazing social memories, but it also takes to a place of solitude and humility. The D&B of 1995-1998 always sounds like a spiritual journey to me and a shameless display of electronic musical production in a style that transcends time and never sounds dated (like almost everything does)

Finally I found a whole set of them, I always liked "Hypersleep" in this "Peshay Studio Set". One of my favourite tracks
I was born this year, and I'm only just discovering this type of music now. I love all kinds of music, and don't really have much nostalgia for D&B and jungle, but I definitely see the appeal. It's a very relaxed yet energising vibe, and is great for studying or doing anything passive like playing games to. It's crazy to think that people used to rave and take ecstasy and go wild to this music. I reckon it'd be nice with a joint with some buddies too if they were into that sort of thing, sadly I'm a bit isolated these days so it gets a bit lonely and I haven't really had any smoke sessions or been able to hang out with those types of friends at all since the beginning of the year. It really sucks. Since the beginning of 2021 life has felt so isolated for me, and yet in 1997 people would have imagined 2021 to be quite beautiful, or frighteningly advanced, not filled with news of the pandemic, fear of climate change or people still being displaced and discriminated. The reality is just quite ho-hum. But that is just my experience. Somebody just a mile away could be having the time of their lives. One of the most interesting things I've observed about D&B and jungle albums is that the cover art is usually some kind of old CGI landscape or geometric shapes, or in this case a face which looks half blended in like Nagilum from early TNG haha. Which looks a bit odd and cheap nowadays compared to the quality of digital art these days. However, in the 90's it would have likely looked mysterious and futuristic, and very experimental and shows a lot of the quirky, edgy personality of the producers. I think that all adds to the nostalgic/reminiscent vibe of this music. I was just born back then, but it was a different culture to now, and it's really expressed through the art.

I agree. I think the 1990s was the last decade where the collective outlook on the future, was positive, bright, vibrant and exciting. This outlook has been discontinued though, for many reasons as you mentioned climate change, but also the growth of the ‘free’ market (neoliberalism) into politics, a mental health crisis among the youth, oil and water wars; and now the Covid-19 pandemic. It makes me wonder how my experience of life and current outlook on the world would be different if I lived my teens/20s through the 1980/90s. Would I remain excited for the future in a world which bestows shame upon it. I don’t know. Anyway, I wish that in the new year you meet some likeminded people with similar interests, to amend your feelings of isolation.

You are one bright spark...Hold on and put yourself out there at the same time...You will find your people. Take good care of yourself and let yourself have a dance to good jungle/drum and bass...It was made for dancing and dancing ts good for your heart and soul xx Ps don't forget rave music was born as rebel music against free market tyranny and homophobia before that.

The perfect accompaniment to the start of the day. A white shroud slowly revealing dark shapes in the valley, sunlit green paddocks on the hilltops, a small grey cat brushing herself against my legs. Nature music.
Voyager - Hypersleep dat alien sample maaan getting me every time.... just fucking timeless...
This is the meaning of music. This is pure universal consciousness manifested into auditory pleasure. Absolute masterpiece from the first second to the last. If the universe could be broken down into pure sonic information, this is what it would sound like. Bliss.

@@tbaproductions123It was originally released on a three track promo on Deejay recordings. That's a really rare record. Even the two track version which I own sells for over £100. The three track one with Jazzed Out on is one of the more expensive and sought after tunes on the scene. If you're interested, this is the flip. Sometimes I feel like I’m the only one on the US west coast that even knows of its existence. Talking to internet strangers about it seems to be the only way right now lol! Just look at my screen name, this style of D&B made a huge impression on me back in the day. I didn't feel the need to get anyone in on the act and still don't- I love that it's enjoyed truly by people in the know and not just s throwaway sound.

@@MaxIgnoramus It has to do with personality too. I guess people who are emotionally sensitive and interested in the "metaphysical" can experience the substance of this kind of music! You need to have the "antennas" for this mixture of pure energy and spacey atmosphere. Many people say its nostalgic in a specific sense and I'd agree. I'd say with the german philosopher Ernst Bloch that this music is a glimpse of some essential human utopia as everyone experiences more or less as a child.
