Vox humana and tremblant flutes on St Maximin organ

Музыка

The summer acadamie d'orgue at St Maximin www.orgue-saintmaximin.com/ is a wonderful opportunity for organists young and old to experience one of the seminal instruments of the 18th Century as well as a colourful repertoire. Discovering the French Baroque leads one to re-examine all subsequent music and possibly to play the organ with more colour and excitement.

Thank you for making such music available! I am a 14 year old student organist/composer/improviser, and I am always looking up new music for repertoire and inspiration. Now I am glad to thank one of the people who makes this possible! Thomas.

The organs of spain have vox's a plenty, they have such an austere and majestic sound.

Than you SO MUCH for making such music available. Certainly with the growing interest in the St Maximin organ your work goes hand in hand with INSPIRING performers to explore the more beautiful and exciting areas of the repertoire. If you search "St Maximin Bach" you'll find a masterly performance by Pierre Bardon at one of his weekly recitals of the Bach D Minor which brings both the instrument and the piece which we all know to a new dimension.

You're very welcome and this is why I do it. But it's frustrating as not all performers like being recorded for KZread and so much inspiration is being lost as a result. You might seriously enjoy going on the Summer Course at St Maximin - look up Academie d'Orgue and you'll find the details.

It is the Vox Humana stop combined with 8 foot flutes and tremulant, which interrupts the steady stream of wind going into the pipes so you get puffs of wind instead

Vox Humana are reed pipes with short resonators designed to mimic a choir or soloist singing also used with a tremulant, which intercepts and shakes the wind supply as it goes into the pipes so you get puffs of wind rather than a steady stream.

No - you have to book your own hotel. My son and I stayed in a wonderful hotel with a swimming pool which was most welcome in the 32 degrees heat of summer. The Couvent Royale is not as good. If you're interested send me a message and I'll recommend where we stayed. Phillipe Bardon does speak English as increasingly French people are. So you won't be entirely lost for language.

I have thought about the academie, but even though I speak the language (I was born in France), I live in California! A bit of a commute :-). Does the academie have dormitories of something of the like?

This is St Maximin in France north of Marseilles on the A8 between Aix and Nice. It's one of the most magnificent instruments in the world built in 1775 by Isnard on Dom Bedos principles and not destroyed in the French Revolution. Legend has it that when Napoleon's troops entered to destroy the Basilica the organist struck up the Marseillaise on the instrument's dozen ranks of trumpets.
