Vortex Impact 4000 vs RAPTAR vs MRF Xe: BATTLE OF THE WEAPON MOUNTED RANGEFINDERS

Спорт

Have you heard the hype about the new Vortex Impact 4000 rangefinder? Clearly it's a good unit, but how does it stack up to the best units in the world? Can the $2,000 price point compete with the 8k and $10,600 units on the market? What makes them so different?? We'll find out all that and more in this comparison video.

I feel like the vortex is a civi version of the military lpvo. And since all the r&d was done on the darpa budget and is only giving like half the functionality of the original and doesn't need to integrate with the scope

I appreciate the work that went in to this. However, this review still leaves more questions than it answers. 1.) What was the actual distance to targets and how was the control established? Some of these rangefinders have almost a 10% variance from what the listed target ranges were. A fast response time doesn’t matter much if the range is inaccurate. 2.) How difficult is it to set up a ballistic profile for the solution? The main feature of these units is not only measuring distance, but providing a ballistic shooting solution. While I know it was outside the scope of this video to go into that in detail, I would have liked to at least mention how this as accomplished and how accurate the ballistic solution compared to something like a Kestrel or 4DOF app. Thanks again for the video. I don’t want to come across as critical, but I think the answers to these questions would make a great follow-up video.

No, those are all great points. I wanted to do all those things but with the rain that day it just made it impossible. Hoping to do some follow up videos with these units down the road. Thanks for the comment, thanks for watching!

Cool video! The impact response time is slower using the remote compared to just presing the button. I suspect the first range was over 3 seconds because the remote was off and it has to connect to the impact and then range. You would have also noticed that the coin on the impact changed from 1 to 2 when that happened. Th remote stays awake for 5 min without pressing a button.

Yeah good thought. That makes a lot of sense. Obviously something was off on that first pull which is why I removed it and re-ran the average. Good note, thanks for watching!

I see others for a little over $500, sold to accompany digital scopes. Besides surviving being mounted on 50BMG rifles I don't know what would make these better vs cheaper options.

Cool video. I have some thermal with integrated LRF (pulsar XG50 LRF and Telos LRF) Definitely nice to have. The pro-sumer can’t ignore the $2k price point. Lotta bang for the buck XE is sexy tho just not affordable at $10k

Hey buddy , Correct me if I’m wrong - I have the impact 4000 … When you was ranging targets on each unit - you held your scope crosshairs on the target …. I believe you need to hold BELOW the target so the laser gets on the target your ranging ? For example . My impact is mounted 3 inches above my optic centre to center . So this works out around 0.8 mills . So you should hold the crosshairs 0.8 mills below the target so the laser hits what you’re aiming at ? Please correct me if I’m wrong but I’m sure that’s how all weapon mounted laser rangefinders work …

Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment. It all depends on how you collimate the laser. I zero mine at 2000 yards directly in line with my crosshair so there’s no offset. If you zero with offset, then your thinking described above would be correct. I haven’t found there to be substantial enough difference to that, but some guys do. Again, thanks for the comment man!

You should do a comparison of the units where there isn’t a berm behind the the targets. Like free standing plates on T posts in a field. I have found that my impact 4000 has a hard time picking up stand alone targets due to the beam divergence. It will end up ranging a berm hundreds of yards behind the freestanding target

Are you able to change the range mode to "first" instead of "best" or "last"? Could help out with those types of target situations. I've found I'll still get a range on the back berm, but if can watch and get some hits on the actual target which will stand out as being the closer of the two readings.

You may have addressed this in your video, as I didn’t have time to watch end-to-end and skipped much of the chit-chat, but… the Raptar-S has two ranging modes - a high precision mode and a high speed mode. The HS mode is great for out to 1Km, whereas the Precision mode is better for longer ranges and difficult conditions. Also, the Vortex uses a 840-900nm IR laser that is visible under NODs, whereas the Wilcox units use 1535nm SWIR laser that are not visible under NODs. Just some info that may or may not be relevant. I also have all 3 of these units, plus the Envision MARS as well (which is better than all of the others). EDIT: I just watched some of the chit-chat and noticed you did include the wavelength info 😊) You mentioned that the Rap-S you used was a 2015 model. That was the first year they were introduced. There have been four major hardware and software upgrades to the Rap-S since then which dramatically improved performance and functionality across the board. I’m happy to loan you a 2022 unit and my MARS to test if you’d like.

As MARS user can you confirm that will it take wind azimuth from Kestrel and then update solution as DOF azimuth changes? Since some claims that it doesn’t continually update the firing solution based on wind speed/direction but will do so each time the user ranges the target (ie if you range, then observe for three minutes, it would perhaps be wise to range again just before firing for newest environmentals). I'm still pending between MARS (wich is faster in my opinion) and MRF Xe (but I hate the cable attachment system of its remote control )
