Von Erich, The Legend Lives On - 1997 student documentary by Rusty Baker

Ойын-сауық

Von Erich, The Legend Lives On is a student documentary short that was shown only once at University of North Texas Radio-Television-Film Department’s Summer Documentary Workshop Screening on July 3, 1997. Although Kevin Von Erich has granted several interviews, both before and after, this documentary features his wife Pam in her only recorded interview. It also includes Fritz Von Erich’s final interview before he passed away in September of that year. The documentary spring-loaded Rusty Baker’s Faded Glory, The Von Erich Story.
Rusty Baker was a film student at UNT when he met his childhood hero, Kevin Von Erich, who happened to be his temporary next-door neighbor while his house was being built near Lake Dallas. Kevin and Rusty became great acquaintances and soon partnered together to make the Von Erich’s first documentary since leaving the WCCW. Kevin’s father, Fritz, gave Baker unprecedented access to the family’s 8mm home movies dating as far back as 1959. The films chronicled the family’s home life as well as their rise into professional wrestling. Fritz had turned down scores of requests for interviews in his late life, but gave Baker 30 minutes to ask questions dealing with the Von Erich family’s tragic past.
Rusty Baker, who wrote and produced Von Erich The Legend Lives On is a contributor to this KZread channel and authorizes its content. Portions of Von Erich wrestling footage were cleared for use by the Von Erich family in 1997, but later became the Intellectual Property of the WWE in 2006. The interviews were recorded and edited by Rusty Baker for the documentary seen here.

They always said Chris had severe asthma, so in those days, he most likely took heavy doses of Prednisone in pill form. There are a lot of more advanced inhaled medications now that don't have to be used as extensively to manage Asthma, except in extreme cases. Even in 94, my friend and teammate who had always had fairly bad asthma switched to a new medicine and what looked like at the time to me as some sort of "space age" contraption, which was a spacer/holding chamber and it made him like a new person. He would hit that twice and be good to practice like he didn't even have Asthma, where before he would be sucking on his little inhaler like a man man all the time. Chris's facial features suggested mouth breathing as well, so he might have had some fairly serious obstructive sleep apnea, which also stunted his growth and created other health problems. That would also most likely have been easily diagnosed and treated today. Of course that would all might have been a mute point if Fritz and Doris weren't chain smokers.

Dear Rusty, I cannot thank you enough for uploading this content. I love these lads and always will. “Met them” back in 1982 via a VHS tape my dad brought me from a business trip to the US. He brought me a World Class tape and an AWA one. Instantly fell in love with wrestling, and as my given name is David, fell in awe with The Yellow Rose of Texas! Had he lived, he would be in the NWA’s Mt. Rushmore alongside the likes of Flair, Harley and Dusty. He was a once in a lifetime talent and a unique in-ring general. Kev was the best athlete and Kerry oozed charisma and was built like my He-Man action figure. The Kennedys of wrestling they were. Cheers

What kind words. You really put a lot of things into perspective for all of us. Where did you live when your dad brought home that tape? Was anyone else into wrestling where you lived, or were you able to get them interested with your tape? How did you continue to follow wrestling from there? This is really interesting to see how you connected and continued to be a huge fan!

@@PickingUpthePiecesofUs I am from Bogotá, Colombia, ergo my passion for wrestling is very seldom shared by compatriots! We are invested in association football and cycling, but wrestling? My dad was a top executive for an American company, so he traveled a lot to the States and we used to spend our summer vacations there, so that’s how I got to follow wrestling: tapes and during summertime. Around 87 the first Colombian cable company began operations and I was fortunate enough that two of the six original channels were ESPN and TBS, so I got to watch the dying days of both the AWA and JCP. At the same time, ESPN began airing “Legends of WCCW” during weekdays, so I furthered my knowledge of the Von Erichs. And on top of it all, our neighborhood’s satellite dish began airing the USA network, so I kept on with the WWF. One can say that the Wrestling Gods have been generous with me! Cheers!

I don’t know if this was my legacy. It got me my first television job as the producer and director of a local wrestling show called PCW. None of us were making any real money, but we had a lot of fun producing a weekly show. I quit after the first year and went back to the Marine Corps the day after 9/11. I was able to make a name for myself in Afghanistan as a combat correspondent and photographer. I went back to the “sandbox” a second time, leading a Company of Marines. THAT was my crowning achievement - bringing them all back home alive!

That thumbnail brings memories so many memories of WCCW! The Von Erich's were, are, and will always be beloved world wide but especially in Texas! Fritz was a bad dude, Kevin was built like a Greek God, David was a tower of bad ass, and Kerry was the modern day warrior! All had their own personality and all loved their dad eventhough Fritz was a tough as nails dad! The Von Erich's are an American family who lived life on their terms with tragic results! The legend of the Von Erich's will outlive us all!

@@PickingUpthePiecesofUs for a multitude of reasons, one being tragedy, I'm not sure that any other wrestlers have a following like this family does. Fans, yes of course. I'm talking about something more emotional. We were in middle school when David died and me and a couple of friends went down to his funeral. Their family was like a small extension of our own, they made me want to be a Texan. A few miles up the interstate isn't too bad though. WWE can't and won't do them justice. Really glad that you were able to post these videos, enjoyed watching them.

@@stephengrahn9361 thank you, around here the fans loved that family for sure, their story is really something. I would like to think that as the WCCW faded their careers would have continued to flourish had all the tragedy never happened. I just don't know, stories from some of the wrestlers with the WWE, sounds like an awful organization. They were able to interact with the fans and that was something I've never seen with the bigger companies. I read a comment once, the guy said that when he was a child, he and his dad were out to eat and Kerry along with some others were there. Whoever the manager was at the time told them to basically go away and no autographs. He said that you could tell Kerry didn't like that. They were real, they didn't have a gimmick in Texas at least. Really miss watching them, haven't been much of a fan of wrestling since.

Pam has proven to be a strong woman and stabilizing presence - working with Kevin to build a strong family life. This interview with her is strangely awkward and has a bit of a Stepford Wife quality to me - the curling up in the blanket is bizarre. Perhaps she was extremely nervous? Recent photos of her (2023) at the Iron Claw movie premiere show a confident, mature woman, there's just something very unusual about this older interview!

It must've been a texas thing, it's the local lads turned heroes, growing up in the public eye, entertaining, to be fair wrestling fans are quirky just for enjoying wrestling, it's like Lawler in Memphis though, put him in a national company & he gets cameos & commentary, but in Memphis, he was literally a king to them. But yeah, while I don't agree with you, I think they were great & I'm not even American (Bristol, England) but I definitely understand what you're saying.

@PickingUpthePiecesofUs I don't think it's sad for him, you probably didn't mean it how I translated it to myself, but its a different opinion, I know its not ride or over negative, but I can't recall ever gearing or seeing anyone into wrestling who didn't get the Von Erichs, I'm not even American, I'm English, I was 6 when Kerry died (or I would've turned 6 that year, I don't know if it was before or after my 6th birthday (1st June) but I remember having a Texas Tornado figure when I was younger & thinking he was more impressive to look at than Ultimate Warrior, & Warrior in his heyday made Brock Lesnar look like he got bad genetics lol (Steroids are great aye... 😮😂)
