Volvo Penta folding prop hub don´t last forever

My Bavaria friend was sailing from my sail club to another club out by the ocean, the engine was in neutral a great part of the way and therefore spinning occasionally.
When he started the engine and switched the gear selector to forward and then gave it some gas the boat would not move and someting was wrong.
First he thought there was a problem with a shifting cable or the gearsystem it self.
He contacted me and I drowe to the sail club by the ocean and took a look at the whole problem.
My diagnose was someting was wrong with the prop and it seems like I was right.
The price for this little repair was around 1300 US Dollars with crane and parts, so check the propeller propperly on your boat before you get into the water.
The problem is the jets inside the propeller gets worn away over time due to the veil inside the prop hub, maybe it's a fault in the old design.
I know the new hub has a different par number so maybe Volvo knew something was wrong and they then fixed the problem on the new generation of propeller hubs.

I see many comments here as in this video where the entire hub assembly was replaced. This is expensive and not necessary as there is a Volvo replacement hub insert available but not listed by Volvo for this prop. It is like they are purposely hiding the replacement hub insert and list it for a different prop all together. Remove/replace inner splined hub $400 vs $1021 for a new hub assembly from Volvo. Also, the new hub assembly does not work with older prop blades as they changed it ever so slightly so you have to buy new blades as well. Leave it up to Volvo!

I have got the same problem with my 2 blade folding propeller from Volvo Penta part 21630720. The interior part of this massive brass (to massive?) propeller is manufactured of aluminium alloy, which is not being strong enough to enormous moments created when switching forth and back during harbor maneuvers. It have been completely damaged inside, exact the way this video shows. I contacted Volvo Penta and they said they never heard about this problem, but they must be laying. The aluminium is also very sensitive to rust degradation (yes it is) and the choice of this material in this place was probably done to make customers, to replace this expensive hub often, without any thoughts about endangering their lives in the seas. The construction is faulty and it must be a lot of props damaged exact the same way. There are more problems with this prop: 1. Propeller hub does not fit behind the standard anode on 110S sail drive. It should go with its back flange, like in older Volvo propeller models, behind the anode's walls, but it misses it by 4-5 mm. 2. When going reverse this propeller sometimes doesn't want to open at all. To correct this flop, I had to make a little hole close to blade gear, and drive in it little stainless screw. It prevented blades from closing completely by about 3 mm. It was enough to make it open every time. 3. Volvo Penta does not bother even to put right instruction about assembling this propeller on 110S sail drive. The picture in their instruction has not to much to do with the real gear, and there is missing both anode and the distance sleeve from drive part, which must be put to make this prop work properly on this device. Volvo Penta did extremely bad job with this prop ( and previous folding props, loosing blades too), but they refuse to admit it. Use another folding props. Avoid Volvo Penta. Swedish quality is only a mit and in this case a bitter joke!

I had a similar folding on my Bavaria C45 and noticed the waering out it was still working but We decided to change to avoid a total loss of power in sea.local Volvo penta dealer proposed 3 weeks for replacement of center part and I bought an original fixed prop at a lower pricethan the center part of folding prop..I wonder if it is possible to produce an inner sleeve to go inside my older center..I guess I need the measurements of S-drive rod..

Yes it seems like a lot of people has the same problem with the folding prop hub, but something I have discovered is the numbers is different on the new models and you can't find the old prop number anymore. Maybe there has been a design fault in the older generation, also a bit strange why all the old prop hubs is going bad. If you have a 2 blade fixed prop the drag is only a problem at +8 knots. If you have a 3 blade fixed prop there would be a difference from fixed to folding regarding drag. You can find the prop drag curve at volvo pentas website.

IHi, I have the same propeller produced by Radice on my Bavaria 32 (2002) with Volvo MD2020 engine and I never had any problems. I would like to know what size propeller, pitch and diameter the propeller has.

I don't know very much about propellers but when I search on the hub number "3858285" (the failed hub) I can see this is not the only one there has failed. Maybe there is a production error in this model. When looking at Volvos propeller guide I can see they have changed the numbers on the new models, so maybe Volvo has been aware of the problem with the hub model 3858285

I've gone through 2 hubs in 6yrs - the rubber inset moves and causes increasing vibration. No-one will replace the insert even though the part is available.

Yes, I replace the inner hubs for the Volvo folding props. $400 vs $1021 for a new hub from Volvo.

If it is so far gone, how it was possible to motor the boat last summer?

He has sailed some trips this year and a lot last year, the question is also why it happened. Maybe it is due to a bolt there is not tightened enough or maybe a wrong dimension spacer, know there is a spacer for the fixed blade and another type for the folding prop according to my investigation. Think the most important thing is to secure there is no veil in the hub when it is mounted, I know there is absolutely no vail in my own fixed blade prop when it is mounted.

Tino G - Sailing... I guess this is natural result after long period of using ..every time you put it reverse and forward there’s an incremental wear out..it builds in time and excellerates once the gap is greater..you need to give some power to lock the wings for reverse and it locks under some pressure and causes the problem..

That looks like a Bruntons Varifold VF108 3 Blade. If the retaining nut holding the prop onto the spline is loose then in reverse it can wear the spline off the inside of the prop. A very expensive oversight.
