Volume Sports Photography Lighting & Posing

This video is about lighting and posing for a high volume sports photography business. This video was a little rushed and jumped around some, so my apologies. This is primarily about outdoor lighting and posing but has some tips that will apply to photographing indoors as well.

My wife woke up in the middle of me watching this video and asked if I wanted to change the battery or did I want her to call maintenance. She didn't believe me it was on the video until I ran it back a few times.

That's so funny! I just watched this video and my wife spent half of it checking all the fire alarm batteries. We didn't realize it was the video until we read the comments!

Been doinh team photography for ten years and I learned many of Vincent's teaching the hard way. I wish this had been around when I started out. Listen to this and follow his advice and things will be much easier. 8-) Great Job Vincent. Nice choice in Cameras too.

Thanks so much, Vincent. I'm not a Sports Photographer, just a hobbyist who gets called on by my church and other entities to take pictures of small groups....mainly because I do them for free!! This was a big help.

This was such a helpful video, a "real world" perspective from someone in the trenches. I gained so much insight on just about every topic, even the NO TOUCH part. It just seems to make so much sense to avoid any hint of, lets say, misconduct. I'm 68 years old, maybe I'm not in the Creepy middle age category but then again there is the Dirty Old Man thing Ha Ha. No, I just retired from a career in anesthesia and my grandson's love of baseball rekindled my interest in photography. I am getting to know the coaches of Cal Ripken and middle school baseball and have been seen so many times at the games taking photos of my grandson and other players. I started out just having players photos "developed" at Walgreens, 4X6, and handing them out at games to the parents as a fun gesture and now I have folks coming up to me asking me how much I charge and can I take photos of their child at soccer or Lacrosse. My grandson's coach asked me about team photos. I'm unsure about where to go from here, I love taking sports photos, a few extra bucks would always be nice but I don't know if I want to make it a business. I've watched lots of your videos, like the one about back or front focus and micro adjusted one of my Nikon lens. I look forward to more sports photo videos, Thank, Ted

Vincent, seeing the Dodgers uniform on your model prompted me to tell you I live in Vero Beach,Florida. It used to be the home of Dodgertown, now Historic Dodgertown ball park. I remember seeing the Dodgers playing at spring training here. The fall ball teams used a couple of their practice fields this past season and I was able to get access to the dugouts and inside the fence for photos, no issues, amazing. Thats all.....

Thank you so much for posting this great video so quickly. I have a few questions: Which softboxes do you use? Which lens do you use? You use battery powered strobes? How do you figure out the right pricing for your packages? Which lab do you use (I am debating whether to choose H&H or Miller's)? Do you fulfill your own orders or let the lab do it for a commission? Thank you sooo much for all your thoughts and tips!

Thanks maestro Vincent love the video. I just have a cuestion regarding the speedlights. When shooting singles could i use the magmod spheres or bouncer in the place of umbrelas or softboxes? I have 3 godox 860 II with the xpro. For the teams igot 3 broncolor mobil packs with reflectors. Gracias maestro. Best Regards @walocortes

One more question re posing. I know you said you make then choose a pose and you don't like full frame poses. I was thinking to do the traditional ball under the arm pose and also them sitting on the ball. However, do you think it gets to complicated with possibly adjusting the softbox (possibly lowering it every time the kids sits)? Or should both poses be a standing one? What else could you do in soccer that is interesting when standing up for a mid length shot?

With the Newwer moonlights, do they run on battery, or do you need to buy some sort of power pack to use them. Have you had issues with them overheating, or catching on fire? I’ve read a couple of reviews where that was the allegation.

Is it better to shoot with natural light if you only have one light for individual poses? I have 1 AD600 OCF and I am going to shoot my first team sports (little league) images soon.
