"to do a lot with one or two lights..." I AGREE! I work at a school and when I get requests to do team and individual portraits, showing up with a cube truck with tons of equipment gets old fast. Thank you for sharing your video... I'll be placing an order soon through your links!

I like that your using a 400 wa tt strobe for action and that it can be done effectively. I usually carry a 400 and a coulpe of 200 watt godox lights in case i really want to be able to go anywhere. Nice shoot.

Good job light setting and result . But I dont use 1/4000s and 4000 iso for this work. Actually high iso as 4000 understandeable if shutter speed less then 1/500 or if u need perfect freezing 1/1000 . So I can down shutter speed to 1/1000 iso will be 1000 right.

1/1000 is too slow to stop motion in the extremities (foot, ball, arms, etc.) and even 1/2000 probably would have hints of blur in areas. For a photo like that, grain is preferable to blur, so jumping up an extra stop was probably justified (especially since you don't want athletes doing too many higher-risk kicks like this).

You could! Depending on the ambient light, you make need more or less power.

To avoid the second light with the subject is a difficult task in moving subject

Your bicycle image utilized a fairly high ISO... What was the deciding factor on this move? light power? I assume this is the case based on the already fast shutter and loss of light via 5.6 F stop...

I thought ISO-800 was high for the standing portrait too, but at 1/500 I'm guessing he was trying to control ambient exposure and keep the background towards the darker side (with a sufficient DoF at f/5.6). I'm guessing the bicycle kick was a similar issue where he wanted to keep the background dark and was limited by flash power (and distance to athlete), but had to keep SS really high to prevent any blur.

Im having a problem practicing… my image is perfect for the background sky being darker like I want it but my subject is still too dark and my light is at max power! Im at ISO 100 F5.6 1/1000? Pls help? Do i need a different light box on end? And perhaps add second light?

I thought using high speed sync dramatically increases flash duration and therefore makes it unusable for action/fast moving shots?!

HSS allows you to go to a much faster shutter speed (often times up to 1/8000). So your subject is then frozen by shutter speed as opposed to flash duration.

I mainly use HSS to freeze action. You can also use it for portraiture, however...if you're like me and prefer a nice bokeh (blurry) background; I go with an ND filter along a fast aperture to achieve this effect while using less power from my lights.
