Welcome to a new voltlog, today we’ll take a look at the BEST 863 hot air rework station, this will be a review and teardown and I think most people are wondering is this a good alternative to the Quick 861DW? Especially since it’s almost half the price. Well the BST-863 hot air station is definitively something to consider over the 861DW because internally they are almost the same construction, the same build quality and offer similar functionality.
If you enjoyed watching this review and teardown of the BST-863 please consider supporting the channel by using the link below to purchase this rework station.

Is there any difference in the station besides the cable? So has the station both support for both voltages or has other hardware to be installed in the respective station?

Most videos I've seen have pointed out 1 unit adjustment. Cannot agree more! If that had rotary switches and perhaps 5 unit adjustment it would be perfect and I'd get one immediately. I've been planning on getting a similar unit of some kind. I with it was made more compact. Space at work bench is premium always. Still, so tempting and more power really makes a difference sometimes and accurate temperature reading (unlike my very compact cheapo) would be so great. I think Quick 861DW too has one unit adjustment resolution (but with real buttons that are bigger) and it is also pretty large and could be made smaller.

I'm not sure what it is, but no one seems to be able to design the perfect station. The Metcal is almost perfect, but no auto power-down. This is almost perfect except the UI, same with the 861DW. Others are just too expensive for what they are

@@pr0xZen I ended up selling it on eBay and got Quick 861DW instead. However, the guy who bought it, left this comment on how he fixed it: I found the problem (why the fan stopped working). It is all fixed now, very pleased. This was caused by the RoHS lead free solder. There had grown microscopic Tin whiskers around the fan connector terminals. Because of the high pulsed current of the fan motor. (this is what grows the metal crystals, very small and easy to miss). So it shorted the motor contacts and killed the fan driver IC. Replacement chip came from digikey, and it works now. (what they should have done is protected the terminals with a paint or other coating). Hehe so I hope you liked the story behind that.

  • @voltlog

It depends on the budget as well, because it you can afford the BST-863 get it from the start, you will get all the advantages from the start and you will save the money spent on the cheaper one that will probably be replaced later. If you cannot afford the BST-863 than you will have to go with one of the cheaper options with the fan integrated in the handle and I think any choice from the ones you listed would perform similar but inferior to the BST-863. It also depends on how much work you are going to with hot air, if you will use it rarely than it might not be worth it to invest in a good hot air station and instead it might make sense to go for a cheap one.

@@extrememod_ahu Thermal fuse blowing is _not_ the cause. It's a sympthom. It blows because there's no airflow so the heater element overheats (or it might be burnt out by now) - the thermal fuse is working as it should. I would suggest checking on all the wires, connections and solder joints between the blower fan and the the board. These fans are pretty durable parts, so it's more likely the fan gets no power rather than being broken. Also check the board for accidental solder bridges. However, this is obviously either a manufacturing defect or shipping damage. So this is on the manufacturer, seller and/or their logistics partner(s). I hope you requested a refund or replacement.

What it really matters in every hot air tool is the power of the heater and the ability to work on smd parts using high heat with the slowest air speed to prevent the tiny components from launching to nowhere. The exactly temperature adjustments is not so critical because every component on different pcb materials need different heating times and the rule is heat it up until the solder melts.

@@voltlog TL;DR You can just replace the hose with a comfortably longer one you know..? Nothing special about it. With how powerful the fan is, if you use a small adapter in each end, you can use a thinner, more nimble hose too. - I did mine with 35 cm extra, in 15 mm (OD) silicone hose, just some AliExpress knockoff'ish of the blue Samco ones you see in 80% of tuner cars. Paid like $4/m including shipping. 11mm ID IIRC. 1 or 1.5 mm walls leaves too thin a wall with straight silicone being so soft, it kinks too easily (although this is generally less of an issue with the added length). I did use the type _without_ (!) thread armoring in the tube wall. The thread armored type is too stiff for this purpose IMO, in large part because they rarely come with wall thickness _less_ than 2.5-3 mm for this range of OD size hose. If you _do_ find thread armored silicone hose with 1.5 mm walls however, that would probably be ideal. It would not easily kink, and be near half the weight. Or you could step down to 13 or even 12 mm OD and get the same airflow. I did use very thin-walled coupling adapters though, to not add 2 additional airflow bottlenecks on top of the hose. I also scavenged some size and flexibility appropriate strain reliefs from an E-waste dumpster. Though, the original ones were a little too stiff for the smaller, softer silicone hose, at least at the handle end.

It has pretty much the same features (including a holder with reed sensor for auto shutdown) but is a whole lot more compact, way cheaper and has a much better user interface with physical buttons and a big quadrature encoder wheel. It is also available from reputable sellers in Europe which means it comes with real warranty and tested electrical safety and looks much nicer, too. @@voltlog I've used expensive versions of such units before and but even there the difference is not quite as extreme as you make it seem. The only real advantage of a professional version is the much lower noise level, but the hose is really a bummer compared to a flexible power cable; the performance is pretty much identical. With my Yihua I can also make 0603 (and of course smaller) fly away and heating up to 320°C takes only a few seconds. If I'd go for a station I'd take a combo which includes a pre-heater and some intelligence to automatically balance the heat; that makes a huge difference in reworking.

The blower motor just whines like you would expect a jammed brushless motor that cannot start up to do, for just a few seconds, when the handle is picked up. It's not an expensive unit, but with no functioning blower and no source of parts that I can locate, it is money thrown away. I regret not buying the Quick.

Try one, maybe if you don't buy the cheapest junker it won't look "crappy cheap". I have one of those (Atten 858D) and it certainly works well, even though it doesn't have as much power as this Best or the Quick. I have bought it to replace an older station that also had a thick hose like the Best in the video, because the thick stiff hose is extremely annoying on the bench when not in use. A thin cable to the handpiece on the Atten is much easier to manage. That's kinda important if you don't have a large bench and don't use hot air every day.

no thank you.....that's not alternative that is a copy of quick 861 series including the internal parts with a lcd panel why lcd ? you don't need . Best company is not that great i guarantee that will fail very soon if used daily as most of their products Starting with the fan noise is already a fail.

Banggood are good at sending free stuff to KZread creators but they treat their customers like rubbish. I would never spend that much money on anything from banggood it is not worth the risk, if it is not delivered good luck with their customer service! Beware of buying anything from banggood!

There is no risk involved if you pay with paypal, no matter what amount you pay or if you choose banggood's insurance service. You just open a dispute and you get your money back, every single time. Now if you choose to pay with a credit card and you don't take the insurance service, well you've accepted the risk.

@@voltlog They closed my account because I had to lodge a dispute to get my money back. That to me is unacceptable after being a customer for many years.

@@gregsmith2262 I am a customer of banggood since before I had the youtube channel and when I had problems I disputed the payment through paypal and I easily got my money back. They did not close my account and even if they did I would have just created a new account and continued to order from their shop for as long as I thought it made sense to me financially and logistically.

@@voltlog So you would be willing to do business with a company that has such customer service and recommend people buy from them? It is crystal clear where your loyalty is and it is clearly not with your subscription base, bit sad really. I think people should be cautious regarding companies where you have to open disputes via external services. Your view wouldn't be different if you were not getting free "gifts" would it?

@@gregsmith2262 I think you need to be real and acknowledge the fact that every online shop this size, especially ones from China have their problems and often those problems happen outside their shop, specifically with shipping services. If you were to exclude buying from these shops based on your criteria there wouldn't be any left where to order stuff. I just told you the solution to the problem but you seem to ignore the solution and focus on the problem only.
