I've been watching vids of actual Japanese powerhouse highschools preparing for nationals, and one setter (one of the stars of the previous year's competition) was practicing back tosses and one hand tosses into something like a basketball hoop. And the kid barely missed. Those powerhouse players are no joke man.

A little earlier. When trying out the minus tempo "floaty people" are the best spikers. They have to be in the air before the set even comes in and stay for at least a second until the set reaches. For the setter, someone who can set in a linear path. Forget about curving the ball, just straight up send it in a projectile path to the spike point. But yeah, it really comes down to trust

I've been loving all the recreation videos and this is no exception! One thing I would absolutely love to know though is whether or not the people you're with have also seen the show and are familiar with it or if you just showed them the clip of what you're trying to recreate beforehand and that's what they're going off of. Like, I know the show has had a big effect on the popularity of the sport overall and brought in a lot of new people, but I want to know how many people who were already hardcore volleyballers before it have seen it too. Just how deeply has it permeated the volleyball culture for those who were already involved? Those things would be really cool to know. Plus, if there are players who aren't already aware / haven't already seen it, you could show it to them and spread it even more! Maybe even host a Haikyuu viewing party after a game or tournament? Players from all the teams gathered up and just hooting and hollering at Karasuno vs Seijoh would be so cool to see 😃

If a spider wants to do a minus tempo he has to time his approach with not only the setter but also the ball. Like that one time he was chasing a ball that was passed way out on the right and he back sets it across the entire court perfectly for Kindaichi

the thing is on the second technique they are trying to match the setter so they are loosing a lot of speed but if they tried just run and jump at max speed it could have worked out

not to nitpick, but i think the spike at 1:50 technically isn't a minus tempo because you can see that the ball has actually left the setters hands before you left the ground, so it would technically be just a very fast 1st tempo still super impressive though

Exactly. Minus tempo needs you to have a pretty high hang time and a very accurate set going straight through the spike point. It was very close though.

I feel like, even though they did a good job, many of these sets are quite common if you play middle, you really have to optimise how many steps you actually get in to your approach (less = better)

Yeah, you never actually did a minus tempo because you were clearly still on the ground when the setter set the ball. It was totally doable. You just needed to have someone else receive/pass the ball because Hinata has never passed a ball that he’s then hit, you know with him being a MB and all.

Ok im about to do an umm actually but for it to be minus tempo the spiker has to be on the air before the setter touches the ball so yeah, its very hard to do, cool vod tho enjoyed it a bunch

I mean the duo quick seems to be just an 3 to the outside/oppo so it could be useful in game, but at that point just set the middle a 3 lol. I guess the only benefit is how unexpected it is for someone to do that.
