Nishinoya is 5'2/159 cm and he is just 16 or 17. I'm 153 cm or 5'0 and I'm a 19 year old Malaysian girl. Average for us is 5'1 or 156 cm. The dives a lot of libero's make really hurt my chest or maybe I'm just bad at it?

Here’s something fun I noticed. Minor spoiler warning: In this episode Hinata guesses that Nishinoya is a libero. Nishinoya asks if he was guessing that because he was short, and Hinata responds, no it’s because you’re good at receives. In season 4 at Shiratorizawa’s training camp. The other ball boys ask Hinata if he is a libero, to which he gets excited because he thinks they think he’s that good at receiving. Of course they say, no it’s because you’re short.

Nishinoya is like kageyama, he is a real deal in middle school, kageyama didn't win the best setter in middle school, but nishinoya win the best libero in middle school, this is on their perfecture, not for all Japan, but still great achievement

That's not limited in Japan. It's an Asian thing. I am Indian so I am very well known to this references. Edit: *Asian thing but NOT ENTIRELY.* As one fellow asian said in below that Phillipines and Thiland don't have the reference in common, I felt like clearing the point of view more thoroughly of what I wrote. I used "Asian thing" on the basis of most Asian countries. But not and never to tell those who don't have in common are not Asians. And I used "Asian" only because I didn't had a better word to group this many different parts of Asia, where we have this reference in common. He's one of the loudest voices once Karasuno scores a point alongside Tanaka and he does scream once in a while after saving a strong spike. You'll notice~

@@pallavsarkar2818 I know the episode. But that was tension release and it was in the middle of the match. If you see the first moments, he reacts to Ushijima with only smile and in-head talk. If you watch his digs he rarely even sighs - that's what Daichi refers to. And remember the scene with Daichi and Nishinoya appearing out of nowhere? Yeah, that was the silence Daichi meant.

My theory on why Nishinoya called his moves “Rolling Thunder”: the little bleached part of his bangs look like a thunder and he’s rolling lol ⚡️

8:54 in Japan, being called a "senpai" is a huge compliment, as if someone is your senpai, it means you look up to them for guidance and leadership. Senpai basically translates to someone of higher experience, hierarchy, level, or age in that specific field who offers assistance, friendship, and counsel to a new or inexperienced member.

You're not fully wrong in the definition, but in the anime's context (Hinata callling Noya or Tanaka as senpai) it's just a title, not a compliment. Until last year Nishinoya was a 1st year too, so being called as senpai is like someone calling you with "Sir". It's a recognition, a social position, and some people like it. Huge compliment isn't quite the case.

“Ukai” is their last names. The blonde is Keishin Ukai, in Japan they call each other mostly by their last names over their first. Ikkei Ukai was the older coach who was the commander of Karasuno who took them to Nationals several times.

Nishinoya is not a sarcastic person at all, you'll probably notice this when you watch more Haikyuu. He and Tanaka actually have pretty similar personalities, both positive and straight forward and up-looking. And it comes down to this a lot of times in this anime, there's no villan in Haikyuu, only competitors, and stays very positive throughout the show, that's why it's so amazing. I found coach often thought of some negative possibilities but really hope you can relax and enjoy more about these pure souls and their simple yet powerful motivations. :)

cannot fault coach for having negative leaning thoughts. i, myself was used to watching real life volleyball games and when i tell you that it's hard to separate a real person's intention from the characters bc u can't help visualizing them in real life, i mean it seriously. it's helpful to note as well that coach just picked up watching haikyuu after not watching anime in so long so there are connotations that he might not get.

The scene that they fought the game to the absolute last moment to me shows that, although they have different ideas, approaches, however in the end, all of them love volleyball deeply, that alone to be honest changes my feeling about them completely. :)

Just a tip Coach... There are some episode wherein the ending song shows 5mins before the time. If you notice one episode like that, means after that song, there is still some scenes for that episode. Just like the Season 1 ep 24 (not a spoiler just a reminder🤧) the ending song shows at 20:00 when in fact, ending songs shows at 23:00. So please, be aware of that. If Coach wont see this, please let him know or we wont see his reaction in that episode🤧🥺

That "anti-slip" rubber matting you mentioned in Suga's scene is actually an example of "tactile paving" (paving that can be felt) and it's for the blind/visually impared, so that they can feel (due to the change in texture and the raised bumps) if they are about to leave the sidewalk and enter the street. That's why it's often at pedestrian lanes, or even in entrances to buildings, to signal that the sidewalk ends there and they're entering a new space/terrain with danger (street) or other obstructions (like other people or displays).

I'm pretty sure Nishinoya just calls it "Rolling Thunder" because it sounds cool.

I think they crunchyroll subs might be a little confusing for coach. Crunchyroll subs are great for people who already watch a lot of anime, a lot of things are not translated because people that watch there already know how it works (like the difference between using first and last name in certain situations, sensei, senpai, what it means when people use -san, -chan, -kun etc). Netflix adapts for a general audience that are not familiar with these things, and is more inclusive, I think... Anyway, no matter what subs he prefers, I still really like this series and his reactions! Can't wait to see him react to a full game! :)

I'm not sure if someone talked about this already, but part of the reason they may take the club more seriously in Japan is because students in Japan dedicate to one club and don't join multiple different clubs like some people may do in America (join a math team and a volleyball team). It is also part of each student's school day. They consider the end of the school day to be the time they end their club. I hope this helped! Also, since you said in the beginning Ryu is a cool name, here is a fun fact: Ryu (or if you directly romanize his name: Ryuu) means dragon :)

To add to that, from my understanding the teacher is often just there as a supervisor while the students are the ones that actually lead the clubs. It's a bit different for sports since the coaches would be the ones to set up practice matches and such, but the captain tends to be the one to run the practices.

I just noticed even in the recent seasons, how encouraging nishinoya is to hinata

"Connect" is definitely a concept/word that is central to the anime and it's probably a metaphorical way of saying how you connect each pass/ball to your teammates so it would never drop. Haikyuu also has such great characterization which I think is a nod to how a lot of people connect because of a common interest or passion, in this case, volleyball. I also always thought that Guardian Diety/ God implies how the libero is always guarding the other players' backs both metaphorically and phsyically.

Having a solid libero is reassuring for sure. So much that it feels like you don't even have to look back, you just know it's gonna back up. I'm not a volleyball player (I played futsal and basketball), but I remember in my highschool days, in a sports week event, my class has several athletes but only had 1 volleyball player and he was a libero. So we assembled a team around him and managed to won til the semi final before we lost to a better team, simply because we couldn't really spike well lol, that libero played really hard for us

He’s called “guardian” because guardians protect their allies against attacks. Just like how liberos protect their team against the opposing teams spikes.

I'd like to clarify some stuff coach! Neko means Cat in the team they're facing Nekoma Karasu means Crow in Karasuno Also, when you saw Ukai sneeze, it's because of the superstition of when you sneeze, someone is talking about you, and the same goes if someone is talking bad about you, you get shivers down your spine xD

Not sure if someone pointed it out, but this is a fun little trivia! Nishinoya and Asahi are good friends and complete opposites of each other: •Nishinoya - short, loud, confident, energetic, but can be calm and quiet when he focuses on a receive. Specializes in receives (defense). Birthday is October 10 (10/10). •Asahi - tall, soft-spoken, less confident, timid, but can be really into it when he calls for spikes. Specializes in spikes (offense). Birthday is January 1 (01/01). The way their names are written in Japanese also allude on how they contrast each other: •Nishinoya Yu’s name is written as 西谷 夕 meaning 西=West, 谷=Valley, 夕=Sunset/Evening. •Azumane Asahi’s name is written as 東峰 旭 meaning 東=East, 峰=Mountain top, 旭=Sunrise/Morning Sun. How the author gives names to the characters and teams is pretty cool, even with the simplicity of the show’s title (Haikyuu) which literally means “volleyball” lol.

Nishinoya and Tanaka are particularly happy to be called senpai because of the bound and trust built with the third year players, their seniors, i think. You'll eventually have a good outlook on their relationship and development and how it was building up even before Hinata and Kageyama came. In a sense they were the final pieces to push the team explosively. The third years were exceptional senpais and set the standard for Nishinoya and Tanaka, they made the figure of a senpai to be a strong and supportive one for Ryu and Noya through their actions. I believe Tanaka and Nishinoya are just plainly happy to be able to do the same for others and be looked at in the same way.

Coach! When Takeda-sensei mentioned "he" and the scene suddenly switches to Ukai (the-soon-to-be-coach) sneezing, that's because Takeda-sensei was referring to him. And in some cultures, like in Japan, when people mention or think of someone, that person usually sneezes meaning that there are people who remembers or are talking about them behind their back.

“Senpai” in this case is like upperclassmen but generally the honorific can be used just as someone older or of slightly higher standing than you (he likes the feeling of importance from getting called senpai) “-chan” is used for girls/ close friends of equal or lower standing than you “-kun” is for boys of equal or lower standing than you “-san” is for someone above you and is similar to Ms/ Mr “Sensei” is for teachers specifically (like Tekeda sensei) “-sama” is the most formal, you probably won’t see this in an anime like haikuu because of how formal it is Hope this helps! ❤️

Suga definitely has a nurturing personality, and that’s partly why he’s nicknamed Sugamama. Also, you were spot on with your analysis that Asahi is a gentle giant; Asahi is one of the most kindhearted characters ever despite his looks, haha. As for Ukai, he and his grandpa are both Ukai because it’s the family name. The one that Takeda is trying to get to be their coach is Ukai Keishin. (And the reason he sneezed is because they were talking about him, haha. It becomes a recurring joke in the anime that when they talk about other characters, that those characters sneeze or do something.) Noya is amazing - both as a character and a libero. He really proves why he’s called the Guardian Deity in future episodes and in future seasons as well. His “Rolling Thunder” is also super iconic, lol. Also Nekoma is....something to look forward to. They’re a very interesting team. But I can’t say much else because I don’t want to spoil. Just look forward to Nekoma.

The sneezing thing is a thing in Japanese culture. It's there in just about every anime. If somebody sneezes it's often right when somebody is talking about them.

Just my own interpretation but i see that the quite flashy nishinoya's hairstyle is related to "thunder" with its front-blonde part, especially when he rolls sideways, the blonde part will be seen zig-zagging/bouncing if you trace it back of its position following his movement.

In Japan, people usually call each other by their family name hence, "Kageyama" and "Hinata " People they're close to (like family) or friends that know them well can call them by first name "Tobio" -kageyama or "Shoyo" Hinata Takeda sensei (or coach) The black haired guy with glasses, he's a literary teacher and the club supervisor (technically assistant coach in the future) He's currently trying to recruit "Ukai" Yes. "Ukai" Is a last name in japan and there are two coach ukai Ukai senior (the former coach of Karasuno) And our Baker/smoking ukai that works in the store. Yes, he's related to Ukai senior. The Karasuno team: Sugawara Koushi: The official setter of Karasuno (he's in 3rd Year in Japan) Sawamura Daichi: Captain! Of Karasuno :)) 3rd year Kiyoko Shimizu: Manager and 3rd year Azumane Asahi: ace and 3rd year (people call him "Jesus'' due to his looks when hair is down 😅) Tanaka: this amazing guy is currently a 2nd year! Nishinoya Yu: He's also a 2nd year and the libero Ennoshita: 2nd year (I don't want to spoil much about his character for now) Tsukishima Kei: also known as "tsukki" (The annoying blonde glasses guy) 1st year Yamaguchi: 1st year and (position classified for now, he's usually seen as the green haired guy that hangs out with tsukki) Kageyama Tobio and Hinata Shoyo: both first years That's the team members we're introduced to for now

When Nishinoya was talking to Hinata about being the ace he wasn't being sarcastic at all. He was actually subbing Asahi. He believes in Asahi alot be he is definitely upset at Asahi right now for leaving the team so he was calling Asahi a wimp. Also Ukai isn't really a baker his store is kind of like a Bodega or a Corner store that he helps manage.

I recently discovered and fell in love with Haikyuu, despite not really liking sports, and only playing volleyball a handful of times in primary school. It is so wholesome, and has been a balm to my soul this last month or so. Discovering your channel has been similarly wonderful. You are a wonderful teacher, the way you explain the athletic elements of the show and point out some of the animation stuff as well as some of the life lessons everyone (even full grown adults like me) can take away is both accessable and exciting. Your students are super lucky to have you, just as we are lucky to have you uploading these reactions. Thankyou for the amazing work, Coach! As always, I cant wait for the next upload :)

@26:20 There's some superstition in Asian culture about sneezing. Whenever you sneeze it means that someone's thinking about you or talking about you. That is why whenever you watch any anime with some romance in it you might see a character randomly sneeze after a person mentions their name. When I was younger I might sneeze loudly and my mom would say that someone's thinking about me as a joke but I never knew that it was a common superstition in asian culture.

It's amazing the amount of times I see uploaders having to explain/apologizing for having to change up the editing for their content to avoid copyright -- especially with Haikyuu -- but frankly, I'm just glad that's there's still a video to watch lol

"neko" in "nekoma" means cat, whereas "karasu" in "karasuno" means crow. that's why the practice match is titled the battle of the garbage dump! edit: also, ukai-kun isn't really a baker. he's more of a convenience store owner

tbh, i found it funny. tsukki will be pissed off if he knows people know him by his nickname cause everyone keeps calling him that despite he doesn't like it. 😂😂😂

In anime, it's a common trope that when someone mentions or alludes to another character - especially when making fun of them, calling them out, or plotting something involving them - they sneeze or shiver as if their body can tell someone is calling them out. So when the teacher/coach hinted that the shop-keeper might be interested after finding out about the team they'll be facing for the practice match, it showed him sneeze as if it affected him. This is mostly meant with comedic intent and isn't trying to claim that people can really tell when people talk about them, but plays on the idea of "what if this person's intent reached out and touched that person who's physically not present in this room/conversation."

26:28 : They showed Ukai sneezing in the scene, because in anime its is often that, when you think or speek at somenone, they sneeze. Sry for my bad english, I am from Germany

Hey Coach! Regarding the scene at 26:18 (where Ukai sneezes), it is a common Japanese superstition that people sneeze when they are being talked about elsewhere. Takeda-sensei was refering to Ukai just before and so we pan over to Ukai sneezing because of this. I've also seen this sort of thing happen in a bunch of anime like Naruto or HunterxHunter. Glad to see more reactions from you again :)

Coach! You should watch the endings, or on some episodes that seem shorter at least scrub past because on some episodes there’s actually an additional scene at the end after the ending song and you don’t wanna miss that! Also, being an animator myself, I encourage you to watch the openings and endings and not skipping them, because 1- they’re awesome and you miss out on some truly iconic animation and songs (the openings and endings change occasionally when the central story or theme of the show shifts usually and also between seasons - the second opening which you haven’t arrived at yet, being one of the best and most iconic for the show) and 2- a lot of people put so much work into those and just appreciating the beautiful animation and editing of the openings and endings is (for me at least) a show of respect to the artists I mean that’s just my personal thing, I’m not saying everyone HAS to watch the opening and ending all the time but like, at least watch them once each to appreciate them, especially when there’s a new one, and check, as I said, past the ending to make sure you’re not missing any scenes! I just want to mention as well, I really appreciate your videos, it’s so much fun to get some volleyball “expert” insights so to speak and makes me appreciate this series even more than I already do thanks to confirmation of the awesome attention to detail and accuracy when it comes to the sport, and on a personal note, it’s also so awesome to me that you have a bit of animation experience and occasionally comment on the production and animation side of things - makes me, a total animation nerd, VERY happy! So I’m so glad I found you! Keep up the good work and Happy watching!

The personality thing is exactly what my dad talks to me about, i play lacrosse and he calls it "flipping that switch" like becoming that player and separate person

I love how you point things out in these episodes that i never really noticed. Like when you saw Oikawa serve and saw where exactly did he hit the ball at. It’s good that you point things that are instructional but have fun while watching

You probably learned about volleyball from Haikyuu, I'm guessing. Lots of what Coach says is something I can nod to, because I noticed the same things. But I've been seriously interested in VB since childhood so I know what to look for :) Watch some real matches, really closely and rewatch Haikyuu - you'll see so many things the next time you watch it. :)

I watch Diamond No Ace and I am buried in baseball rules and videos because some of them are not as clear as I wish. Learned about the short stop the other day and what he does. Can appreciate Jun so freaking much more :)

Nishinoya is actually probably the most honest character in the show about everything. He wasn’t being sarcastic about Hinata wanting to be the ace. He truly admires him for having that ambition.

The sneeze was a reference to "when you sneeze it means someone is talking about you" lol, another anime thing

Also, I think they keep referring to Nishinoya as their guardian deity because he's got their backs by keeping the ball in play even if any of them messes up. That's why he particularly feels bad about Asahi taking the blame. He thinks that he should've done a better job at keeping the ball from touching the ground, so Asahi's misses don't really cause much of a traumatic experience or regret.

I just started playing volleyball and Nishinoya Yuu was my inspiration! Hehe I just wanna share it to you guys

It's the subtitles. Nishinoya was certainly telling Hinata to aim for it but not in a way where it could be interpreted in another meaning. I'm pretty sure there's a different subber out there who managed to capture the tone a lot better than this, which is why it kinda ticked me off when I read this one.

Just a little note about the "baker guy" 1. He is the grandson of Karasuno's previous coach, hence them having the same last name 2. He is not a baker, he's basically the owner/worker at Sakanoshita, a convenience store. Which is run by his family

I come from an intensely competitive marching band/music background, and as I have watched Haikyuu!! and your content, I find numerous parallels between that and the Volleyball world. From the leadership philosophy, to the personal accountability, to the dedicated extra practice hours, to the passion in your voices, to player interactions and relationships, to the DRIVE to be the best version of yourself, I find that even though I have only played volleyball once or twice in Middle School gym class that it all feels deeply familiar. I greatly enjoy seeing your take on this anime. The way you explain the techniques, your insight on player dynamics/mindsets, clips of your team, and real life stories are all thoroughly engaging. It's an Asian superstition. Not really sure if it applies to all Asian countries, but we have that same superstition in my country. When a person sneezes, someone is talking about you. And if you bite your tongue, someone is talking shit about you.

When people sneeze in japan (in armenia also) we have a telling saying : "someone is talking on your back" , he was talking about ukai-kun with the match.

Keep them coming man! You are so insightful it is amazing! I would rather watch these videos than re-watch the show! And what's more, I love seeing all the commenters here. This show is so beautiful.

"Why would he start that scene with him sneezing?" Ooh know this! It's a common gag in anime. There's a superstition, I believe it's called, in Japan that when you randomly sneeze it means someone is talking about you. Its similar to the "my ears are burning" expression we have in English. So, it's sometimes a running gag in anime for a character to sneeze when "the main group" is talking about them :).

there is a superstition in japan for when you sneeze or get some back chills, it means that someone is thinking about you. So when they were talking about the store clerk, the video cut to him sneezing.

Really enjoying rewatching this series with somebody explaining rl volleyball, especially somebody who’s a coach, teacher, and has a background in animation (you’re very qualified lol)! I love these reviews :) I think the reason they showed Ukai sneezing in that scene is because, in Japan, people say that whenever you sneeze it’s because someone somewhere is talking about you. You see that a lot in anime, where it will shift the scene to someone who was just being talked about, and they’re sneezing.
