So Haikyuu's author in his interview was once asked how did he come about to make such an amazing story about volleyball to which he said "That volleyball has been a very important part of my life in school. I loved playing volleyball and it was my passion. Though I could not do much about that passion to make it my career, I wanted to tell people more about this game that I love so much. So even if you don't know anything about volleyball I wanted to write a story and a fun filled journey that would make you root for these guys."

Aoba Johsai literally means "west of Aoba Castle", which is historically known as Sendai Castle. The school's shortened name is 青城 (pronounced as Seijō or Seijoh when romanized.) It comes from Aoba Johsai's first and third kanji being put together. So it's referred to interchangeably Kindaichi, or turnip head, was on Kageyama's junior high team when he was still doing those insane tosses no one could react to, that's why Oikawa says "That's where Kindaichi always scored the best", since he has a little experience setting for Kindaichi in junior high and now on Seijoh, and also because Kageyama never actually bothered to adapt to his spikers and their habits Kunimi, the indifferent looking guy with dark hair parted into two sides down the middle, was also on Kageyama's junior high team together with Kindaichi. He lazily chased after the ball in episode 1 saying that it was pointless to go for it So both Kindaichi and Kunimi, who were very annoyed with Kageyama are now first years at Seijoh. So Kageyama has to play against Oikawa and his two former teammates As the match goes on and Kageyama gets more annoyed, he starts saying "I" more instead of "we", which shows us a glimpse of his King of the Court character For both the first and second season of Haikyuu there are a total of two opening and ending songs, which change starting from episodes 14 onwards. The third season only has one opening song since it's only ten episodes. Then the fourth season has two opening and ending songs again, which change from episodes 14 onwards.

Good detail. In other words, Aoba Johsai is the official translation of the school name and Seijoh is the translation of their nickname so very much interchangeable. Another player Kageyama played with that you see in episode 1 is Kunimi. Both of Kunimi and Kindaichi are key to kageyama's progress as a character in the story

I don't think Oikawa necessarily has that much experience setting to Kindaichi. It's just that Kageyama didn't pay attention to each spiker's qualities and so he's surprised even after playing with the guy for three years.

That is why Hinata call Oikawa-san "The Great King". Oikawa has been one of the role model of Kageyama and especially to his teammates at seijo. Being able to bring out the 100% of his spikers and looking out at their condition is one of the most important quality of being a setter, also Oikawa-san is a very hard working person that doesn't see himself as an "exceptional" setter but an ordinary one. The school's full name is Aoba Jōsai (青葉城西). Transcribed as Johsai in the Crunchyroll subtitles. The exact etymology is: Aoba 青葉 - "green leaves" Jō 城 - "castle" Sai 西 - "west" (Edit: A very helpful commenter in the replies pointed out that "Aoba Castle" or "Aoba-jō" is a landmark in Sendai, which is the capital of the prefecture and likely the city that the team is in. So it's most likely named after that.) The shortened version, Seijō/Seijoh comes from taking the first and third kanji (青城 - the Ao from Aoba, and the Jō from Jōsai.) The pronunciation of the first kanji changes from Ao to Sei. Since "ao" can mean both "blue" and "green" (because green is traditionally considered a shade of blue in Japanese culture), Seijō can be translated Blue Castle or Green Castle. The full name would be something like "Aoba Castle West High" - or "Greenleaf Castle West High" if we were to be literal. Interestingly, the "west" at the end of the name indicates that there may well exist other Aoba Jō-schools, likely also based around Aoba Castle, such as Aoba Jōhoku (north), Aoba Jōnan (south), or Aoba Jōtō (east). Bonus trivia: "Karasuno (烏野)" directly translates to "Crowfield".

Any idea about some cultural background about a blue or green castle in Japan? Something tells me there's more depth to the etymology considering Oikawa is presented as the "Great King" and that ancient Japan and its monarchs liked their geographical references. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if this has a reference to the Johto region.

Seijoh is one of the few major schools who don't have an animal theme in their name (Karasuno - crow Nekoma - cat, Fukurodani - owl, Inarizaki - fox, Shiratorizawa - "white bird"/eagle, etc). There could very well be some symbolism to Seijoh's name, I just don't know about it if there is.

The finger poke is actually very Oikawa. He's not that tough personality( sorry for my poor English explainination) like compare to Hinata and Kageyama who may give they teammates a big slap or a kick🤣Oikawa will have a slight soft poke. But you know the weight and trust behind the poke. There will be a scene where Oikawa slaps his teammate's back, and that's another story. These little details really reflect the characters' personality and attitude, emotions and responses. Sometimes showing these details are just way better then explaining directly . LOVE HAIKYUU

How he immediately came at K-Pop (Oikawa) with his own dump, and how he tricked Onion Top (Kindaichi) with a small look how Kenma did to Tsukki in the practice game. So, I don't know if anyone mentioned this yet but the big team banners give amazing insight on how the teams will play and behave in the court. For instance, Karasuno's "Fly" is a pretty good description of the fallen team that's trying to get back up. Nekoma had "Connect" in theirs, perfectly describing their way of playing focusing on amazing defense and control. Date Tech had the "Iron wall of Date" as their banner and lo and behold, they played focusing on blocking! Aoba Johsai has "Rule the court" in heir banner which not only leads us to think that their team is a powerhouse but also references the fact that Oikawa (K-pop setter) is also called the "King". I know that it's a minor detail, but its something pretty neat to look for the next big team's banner to see what it says!

Also, Seijou is Aobajousai's nickname! 青葉城西 - if you take 青城 (1st and 3rd kanji) it reads as "Seijou".

That's a bit too harsh, I'm not defending the spoiler people. But I mean saying they should never have kids is a bit harsh.

@@damianc669 Sorry if I offended you, but I can't stand people spoiling just to be an asshole. I can't understand the reasoning behind that behaviour and it pisses me off.

Oikawa can bring out 100% of all spikers, that is why he is acknowledged by great spikers. He can analyze the game quickly, and shift gears. He knows his enemies as well as his own teammates. He is a top tier player. It is great fun to watch him.
