So Haikyuu's author in his interview was once asked how did he come about to make such an amazing story about volleyball to which he said "That volleyball has been a very important part of my life in school. I loved playing volleyball and it was my passion. Though I could not do much about that passion to make it my career, I wanted to tell people more about this game that I love so much. So even if you don't know anything about volleyball I wanted to write a story and a fun filled journey that would make you root for these guys."

Aoba Johsai literally means "west of Aoba Castle", which is historically known as Sendai Castle. The school's shortened name is 青城 (pronounced as Seijō or Seijoh when romanized.) It comes from Aoba Johsai's first and third kanji being put together. So it's referred to interchangeably Kindaichi, or turnip head, was on Kageyama's junior high team when he was still doing those insane tosses no one could react to, that's why Oikawa says "That's where Kindaichi always scored the best", since he has a little experience setting for Kindaichi in junior high and now on Seijoh, and also because Kageyama never actually bothered to adapt to his spikers and their habits Kunimi, the indifferent looking guy with dark hair parted into two sides down the middle, was also on Kageyama's junior high team together with Kindaichi. He lazily chased after the ball in episode 1 saying that it was pointless to go for it So both Kindaichi and Kunimi, who were very annoyed with Kageyama are now first years at Seijoh. So Kageyama has to play against Oikawa and his two former teammates As the match goes on and Kageyama gets more annoyed, he starts saying "I" more instead of "we", which shows us a glimpse of his King of the Court character For both the first and second season of Haikyuu there are a total of two opening and ending songs, which change starting from episodes 14 onwards. The third season only has one opening song since it's only ten episodes. Then the fourth season has two opening and ending songs again, which change from episodes 14 onwards.

Good detail. In other words, Aoba Johsai is the official translation of the school name and Seijoh is the translation of their nickname so very much interchangeable. Another player Kageyama played with that you see in episode 1 is Kunimi. Both of Kunimi and Kindaichi are key to kageyama's progress as a character in the story
@mikkosimonen

I don't think Oikawa necessarily has that much experience setting to Kindaichi. It's just that Kageyama didn't pay attention to each spiker's qualities and so he's surprised even after playing with the guy for three years.
It's so weird. Oikawa has everything he needs to be the main character of his own shōnen series. He's like a shōnen protagonist who's already been through his series.

That is why Hinata call Oikawa-san "The Great King". Oikawa has been one of the role model of Kageyama and especially to his teammates at seijo. Being able to bring out the 100% of his spikers and looking out at their condition is one of the most important quality of being a setter, also Oikawa-san is a very hard working person that doesn't see himself as an "exceptional" setter but an ordinary one. The school's full name is Aoba Jōsai (青葉城西). Transcribed as Johsai in the Crunchyroll subtitles. The exact etymology is: Aoba 青葉 - "green leaves" Jō 城 - "castle" Sai 西 - "west" (Edit: A very helpful commenter in the replies pointed out that "Aoba Castle" or "Aoba-jō" is a landmark in Sendai, which is the capital of the prefecture and likely the city that the team is in. So it's most likely named after that.) The shortened version, Seijō/Seijoh comes from taking the first and third kanji (青城 - the Ao from Aoba, and the Jō from Jōsai.) The pronunciation of the first kanji changes from Ao to Sei. Since "ao" can mean both "blue" and "green" (because green is traditionally considered a shade of blue in Japanese culture), Seijō can be translated Blue Castle or Green Castle. The full name would be something like "Aoba Castle West High" - or "Greenleaf Castle West High" if we were to be literal. Interestingly, the "west" at the end of the name indicates that there may well exist other Aoba Jō-schools, likely also based around Aoba Castle, such as Aoba Jōhoku (north), Aoba Jōnan (south), or Aoba Jōtō (east). Bonus trivia: "Karasuno (烏野)" directly translates to "Crowfield".

Any idea about some cultural background about a blue or green castle in Japan? Something tells me there's more depth to the etymology considering Oikawa is presented as the "Great King" and that ancient Japan and its monarchs liked their geographical references. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if this has a reference to the Johto region.
@im_sorry_i_forgot_my_username
3 жыл бұрын
@@Revoltine I don't know about that, personally. Seijoh is one of the few major schools who don't have an animal theme in their name (Karasuno - crow Nekoma - cat, Fukurodani - owl, Inarizaki - fox, Shiratorizawa - "white bird"/eagle, etc). There could very well be some symbolism to Seijoh's name, I just don't know about it if there is.
@Revoltine
3 жыл бұрын
@@im_sorry_i_forgot_my_username Yeah I'm aware of Seijoh's name being based off of a plant instead. Quite likely due to how the school's always been focused on balanced growth and has no true particular volleyball playstyle, unlike how Karasuno is presented as such but, in reality, has always been a highly aggressive team even after Coach Ukai's retirement.
@chaosof99
3 жыл бұрын
@@im_sorry_i_forgot_my_username @Revoltine Their name is a direct refernce to Aoba Castle (青葉城, Aoba-jō), which is located in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture. Miyagi is the setting for this anime, and I believe the tournament is being played in Sendai, the capital of the prefecture.

It's amazing to watch episodes with such a knowledgeable guy. I never understood how Noya knew Oikawa's serve was gonna curve. Now I know it's because Noya could see the way the ball was spinning and knew it was gonna curve to the right. Amazing 👏

Oikawa was just a pretty and talented player to me the first time I watched, but as I rewatched haikyuu several times ( as all haikyuu fans do) I can safely say that Oikawa is my Ultimate fav, the more you watch the more you feel empathetic towards his character and the more you are inspired, he's truly something else. I love him to the moon and back !!
The only OVA episodes that need to be watched are the 2 episodes of "land vs sky" which comes after season 3 and focuses on nekoma. The rest of them are more focused on the humor side of haikyu and only one of them is worth watching which is "haikyuu vs akaten". Land vs sky (riku vs kuu) is available on crunchyroll.
Something I love about Kageyama is that he can adapt other people's play styles to fit his own. How he immediately came at K-Pop (Oikawa) with his own dump, and how he tricked Onion Top (Kindaichi) with a small look how Kenma did to Tsukki in the practice game. It's a true testament to a setter's need to adapt and overcome.
I love whenever they put in Suga to play. He gives an entirely different vibe to the team compared to Kageyama, and it’s just a nice change of pace to have another setter in. Can’t wait to Coach react to Suga’s sets
NOOOO ITS A PREMIERE. I thought it was out already 😭😭

These reactions feel like im watching Haikyuu with someone else.
I love how you're doing the end card on a cool freeze-frame from the episode! That's such a great touch. Loving all the rest of your commentary as always. It's great that you connect Haikyuu to real volleyball and point out when it's unrealistic, so Haikyuu fans can hopefully more easily get into trying real volleyball.
Kageyama wasn't talking metaphorically. he was straight up trash talking and trying to show up Oikawa (K-Pop setter). Very caught up in the moment. However, Hinata reminded him that he is going to be in the back row hence Kageyama was really embarrassed and flustered.
Coach, would you ever show your students the techniques in this anime and recommend them to watch this anime? And no coach, I've watched this anime 10 times and never noticed the ball 😂😂😂.
Cant wait till the next reaction, go Suga!
I love how you pointed out where Oikawa was tying his shoelace to slowdown the game. A ✨ dirty trick ✨ indeed.
big oikawa fan right here
Its come to a point where I actually prepare food before watching these reaction videos. I've rewatched Haikyuu thrice and its still that same excitement while watching it with coach
The curse of speed speech hits really hard after having watched the end of season 4
Holy crap, I just realized that there's a callback to the moment in this episode where Oikawa says, "There's no need to be that surprised, that's where Kindaichi always scored the best." in season 4. Not gonna say what exactly but will hint that it is related to how Coach Donny was explaining how a good setter knows their players preferences and how they should set the ball for someone who likes line shots hehe I truly believe that this callback is not a coincidence at all and that's just how good the writing is!
The next new intro would be on season 2 If i remember correctly, there is always 2 new intros for each season. Every half of each season is a new intro✨ I would love to see you reacting to the OVAs cuz its really good✨
Hey coach, although you may not like Oikawa (aka k pop setter) all that much I do hope you come to appreciate how much he pays attention to and how much he cares for his team mates, and also how much work and effort he puts into volleyball. Btw Ik some people are saying Kageyama also puts in a lot of work and effort but at the end of the day he’s still a “prodigy” or a “genius” as they put it. And I don’t think saying he’s a prodigy takes away from his hard work.

I see you've been taking lessons on how to build hype from watching this! Aaargh, curses!!
I love listening to all these detailed rundowns of plays throughout the series :D There are things Coach picks up on that we have no idea even exists, and it just brings out so much more from the show. I very rarely watch reaction videos, this is the only reaction series I've ever stuck to, because Coach just has such a great way of breaking the episodes down and making the reactions interesting to watch and enjoy.
"Sometimes it takes an entire team to encourage the person that's down." Hmm...
Same height, position, and personality. Glad to see you’re starting to like Tanaka even more.
The breakdown of Nishinoya’s makes me realize the expertise and care the animators take with their storytelling. Crazy!
One of my favourite episodes in the entire series. Oikawa is a great character lol
I CANT WAIT TO SEE HIS REACTION FOR SUGA PLAYS. Thats one of my favorite episode. So im so excited!
can we talk about this outro? the beatdrop + picture freeze was perfect!
"Slump shoulders, mopy attitude, not talking any more" I can't wait for the training camp in S2😂
When they blew the whistle at the end and Suga held up the number I screamed because I'd been waiting so long for him to get his chance to shine. Everyone tends to underestimate Suga up until that point even though he's so important when it comes to Karasuno's strategies. He's the one who came up with the code words for Hinata & Kageyama that managed to fool Date Tech. He's so brilliant and really a force to be reckoned with.
I can't wait to see his reaction to the next episode with Suga-mom XD
The wait is killing me, I wanna watch now😣 Traditional uploads to save us from this torture
So, I don't know if anyone mentioned this yet but the big team banners give amazing insight on how the teams will play and behave in the court. For instance, Karasuno's "Fly" is a pretty good description of the fallen team that's trying to get back up. Nekoma had "Connect" in theirs, perfectly describing their way of playing focusing on amazing defense and control. Date Tech had the "Iron wall of Date" as their banner and lo and behold, they played focusing on blocking! Aoba Johsai has "Rule the court" in heir banner which not only leads us to think that their team is a powerhouse but also references the fact that Oikawa (K-pop setter) is also called the "King". I know that it's a minor detail, but its something pretty neat to look for the next big team's banner to see what it says!
for what oikawa's team is called their schools name is actually aoba(青葉) johsai(城西) but they sort of abreviate the name to seijoh (青城) with the first kanji of each name so you can call them either
I'm really looking forward to Suga playing next episode, so hype!
4:35 The opening and ending again changes in Season 2
The author was a volleyball player in Junior High School and held the position of a middle blocker. So he gets his inspiration on real art of japans high school volleyball life and also all the places you'll see on this anime is a true to life places. I'm sure you will love even more of this Haikyuu Fact Coach!!
A new anime about volleyball called 2.43 Seiin Highschool just released recently, and if you catch up to Haikyuu up to season 4 and waiting for season 5 to come, you might want to consider watching 2.43 in the meantime while waiting for the next season.
Loving the more frequent uploads Coach! Love this series
Oh yeah! I can’t wait to watch Donny’s reaction to Haikyuu and great volleyball advice! 😊
I'm finally catching up with this series and once again I have to praise your detailed observations and explanations of players' strategies and forms!! Thank you for all of the time you spend on these reactions, they're so informative!!
Also, Seijou is Aobajousai's nickname! 青葉城西 - if you take 青城 (1st and 3rd kanji) it reads as "Seijou".
Oikawa is now officially called “Kpop”

Oikawa can bring out 100% of all spikers, that is why he is acknowledged by great spikers. He can analyze the game quickly, and shift gears. He knows his enemies as well as his own teammates. He is a top tier player. It is great fun to watch him.
