The Volkswagen Transporter is now in its fifth generation, and this latest version is even better to drive and cheaper to run than ever, as we find out in this video review.
It comes in two body lengths and three roof heights, and all Transporters come with a handy side door that opens wide enough to fit a euro pallet through.
Optional extras include rails to secure loads to, a rubberised floor mat which provides grip, and you can either stick with the standard van doors or you can have an optional lift up tailgate.
The Transporter has a load bay volume of 5.8 cubic meters to 9.3 cubic matters, and payloads range from 740 to 1340 kilograms. All Transporters come with a 2.0-litre diesel engine, and you can now get a wide variety of power output ranging from 84bhp to 180bhp in the bi-turbo model. The Blue Motion version, Volkswagen claims, can return 44.8mpg and emits just 116g/km of CO2.
Overall, we think the Volkswagen Transporter is an extremely well-built van; many go on to cover huge mileages and resale values are high, too. It's easy to drive, cheap to run, and there's an option of four-wheel drive. But, it's expensive to buy, you can't get secondary wide-angle mirrors and the lack of a full-length bulkhead really is an issue. Watch the video review to find out more.

Some more negatives: Cab made for Chinese. More than 185Cm person does not fit driver. Knees to catch in the ignition key. If a big steak / beer belly hopeless!

Yes it's a great German van. Well built and reliable. However everything is expensive. From new to parts. For the same size you get a transit custom which is cheaper and very well built. Transporter can get two euro pallets in transit custom 3 euro pallet in the short wheel base. You pay more for vw for less space. Why get one??????? Transit will do.
What about the dual mass fly wheel and the water pump going wrong not to forget the rust on the doors. The T5 is the pratmobile.

What about the countless T5’s with over 400,000 miles on the clock with practically nothing done, in fact some have hit over 800,000 with the only thing replaced being a turbo and injectors

Yes. The original T5, years 2004 to 2009 were the good ones. This facelift has lots of problems with the dsg.

The water pump should be changed when the cam belt is replaced, you ignore this at your peril ! Again dual mass flywheel should be replaced when the clutch is replaced, admittedly some don’t last that long but this is not exclusive to VW it affects most manufacturers it’s the price we pay for refinement. The T5 is/was probably the best of the bunch at that time.
I like this typically British style of lying. The reviewer said he regretted having no wide angle sector in the mirrors. The writing on the screen was a bit more categoric - "poorly sized mirrors". They are NOT poorly sized. They are perfect like everything made in Germany. Who the hell needs the wide angle mirrors anyway?

Don't like the wheels
Comparing the t5 to the t4 the t4 is a miles better van the t5 has clutch problems that have never been sorted out , conclusion don’t buy a t5 they are rubbish,
Mostly a 5 speed gear box from 1980 and underpowered engines.
