Volkswagen T-Roc 2020 review

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Was the new VW T-Roc worth the wait? Volkswagen's newest small SUV has arrived in Australia to compete with the Toyota C-HR, Mazda CX-30 and Hyundai Kona, but VW also reckon it'll rival a base model Audi Q2 and BMW X1. So, where does the T-Roc really fit in? Should you buy one? Is there value for money here? And what about all that hard plastic? In this 2020 Volkswagen T-Roc Sport review, Tom checks out what is likely to become one of VW's biggest hits in Australia.
What are your thoughts on the new T-Roc 140TSI Sport? Is this SUV a good effort by Volkswagen? Would you consider it over a Golf or Tiguan? Does the Skoda Karoq make more sense? Comment below!

    Nice review.....Thank you. It is between 3 cars. A fully optioned T Roc, a Scoda Karoq Sportline and a Kia Seltos GT line. The T Roc is looking like my choice at the moment, but hate the white leather (leatherette) on the seats, but I want the sunroof. Actually prefer cloth seats. Test drives for all 3.

    I'm also considering the three models above. You could try picking up the limited x model T Roc. A number of dealers are repainting the red roof and mirrors and replacing the dash with gloss grey out of the standard T Roc. It has cloth interior, a bit nicer than standard cloth imo, electric tail gate, and many are optioned with a sunroof. Depending on your timing, the new Kona will have a N Line model with (not confirmed for OZ yet but likely) 150kw engine and digital dash coming out in a couple of months. Stock is an issue for T Roc & Skoda etc so Kona release could come into play. XC 40 Volvo is another option but starting to get expensive particularly with the T5 engine. Edit The new Ford escape is another option, was impressive on short test drive, however for my requirements and styling likes, it comes in behind the other 5 mentioned above.

    Very informative Review Tom like always from you! I have driven the T-Roc with this engine /gearbox combination for 1 year. On the plus side this TSI-Engine is relatively fast ,so you don t really need the much more expensive R-Version with the embarrassimg material qualitaty insight the cabin. With 17 inch tires and DCC(adaptive damper control) the T-Roc killed nearly all road-imperfections. Fuel-consumption and the very simple LED-Light(without Matrix) were only average .The Beats-Sound-Desaster-System is ridiculous and a shame for VW. In Europe I guess a T-Roc Facelift with a little bit better quality insight and new Assistance-Systems (for example so called Travel-Pilot)will come soon. For what reasons do you prefer the T-Roc to the Mazda Cx30(go into detail if possible) and do you think the sound-insulation of the CX30 is only a little bit or definetely a way better? Greetings from Germany to Australia and stay healthy,Michael.

    Great review Tom, you do a great job well done. From a value proposition it’s falls a bit short I think. No electric seats and some very poor cabin materials is slack. It has finally arrived but it’s 3 years old. I think it’s possible to pick up a Tiguan R line for around 5k more at the moment which is loaded with features and a more powerful engine tune. You would be much better buy a golf R for the same price or even a GTI for less.

  • @chasingcars

    Great review Tom, as always. The 140KW and 320NM AWD suit this SUV exceptionally well. $50k driveway is quite attractive, when compared with some other premium SUV,s of similar engine output. Unfortunately for me, hard plastics and non-electric seat adjustment will be a deal breaker.

    How’s the ride/NVH vs the Audi Q3? I assume worse, but have heard mixed things overseas. The Q3 definitely has a nicer interior, but is obviously more expensive despite having a 1.4 engine in the base model and this arguably looks better outside... comfort and quietness tho is A1 on the list of priorities

  • @chasingcars

    @chasingcars

    4 жыл бұрын

    A1's a little quieter in my opinion, but it's close. Where the Audi pulls well ahead is in perceived cabin quality, with its plush plastics and cold metals. You can actually now get this engine/gearbox combo in the Q3 (40 TFSI) - it just wasn't available at launch.

  • @sunnysok9908

    @sunnysok9908

    I ended up going the q3 in launch edition. Much nicer cabin and the screens/tech is way better. The google maps and built in hot spot is the best and so intuitive even with voice control. The 1.4L is surprisingly smooth and refined. My other car, Tiguan 162tsi’s interior now looks dated, even though I do love the engine more, the smoothness and quietness on the q3 is great for a weekend drive

  • @ashalim79

    Yay finally a T-Roc Chasing Cars review! You can almost get a brand new Audi Q3 with that price! What would be the reasons to choose this over a 132TSI Tiguan Comfortline with options?

  • @chasingcars

    @chasingcars

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hope it was all you wanted! I think over a Tiguan 132TSI Comfortline the main benefits would be (1) the extra agility - it feels smaller on the road and more eager to turn-in; (2) extra pace: it's 0.5s quicker to 100km/h than the Tiguan … not a huge margin; (3) more attractive outside, to my eyes. But I agree, the base Q3 would be the closest rival at this price point.

    The three-coloured seats don't look very nice, do they? And why are a lot of people so keen on electrically adjustable seats? Without memory function they're no more practical than manual ones but have a motor which adds weight and can potentially break.

  • @chasingcars

    I don't mind the colours, but agree they are a niche choice - the black cloth of the standard car will probably be to more tastes. As for electric seats - on a true sports car you want (good) manual seats for their lightness and general ability to get lower, but on a car like this, the practicality and convenience of electric seats (with memory) is better for the couples that typically buy them

Cheaper materials seem to be featuring more and more in VW’s of late, the Golf 8 is be criticised for its plastics too from what I’ve seen, even some of the smaller Audi’s are featuring harder plastics in areas than you hope for in that brand.

    It is disappointing that VW group models have been using cheap ugly hard plastics in their latest models. This is a shame especially at the price of $50k for the T-Roc. The new VW Touareg that can be priced over $130k has the same hard plastics in the lower part of the doors and the middle console. In the past VW group models had quality interior materials that set them apart from the competition. Not anymore. The choice of interior materials is a real shame as the expensive T-Roc looks nice to my eyes otherwise.

    I mean, we have called Volkswagen out on dieselgate pretty consistently, but it wasn’t a reliability issue. Agreed that the plastics are a letdown though!

    @@chasingcars it’s not the first five years you need to be worried about - it’s the following five years if your a long term owner! Also servicing is an issue to consider…over 10 years just scheduled servicing is 2 to 3 times higher for the T-roc compared to the CX-30 ! How do I know? Well I’ve been cross shopping both vehicles and have looked into servicing costs for both. It’s a real shame your reviews don’t address the ownership experience. I know sometimes with new models this is difficult but when vehicles use established technology, such as the T-roc TSI engine / DCT transmission, one can still make useful observations. Also things like service costs are readily available so why not cover that? A car can drive well but if the ownership experience is crap to me it’s not worth considering. I suspect a lot of others would feel the same way.

    What the hell is going on with car prices ? In the last 5 years, they sky rocketed and wages in my country stayed the same. This ugly ass thing t roc is definitely not worth that much money, god damn.

    The small car (hatch) segment has gotten better and better in terms of value. Small SUVs are expensive for what they are because demand is super-high: this is the sort of car most people want right now, and manufacturers know it.
