Volkswagen Passat GTE (ENG) - Test Drive and Review

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Volkswagen Passat Variant GTE is a PHEV or a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle. It is an interesting proposition for someone looking for a big, efficient estate, which can also occasionally surprise others from the lights. Volkswagen claims Passat GTE will do up to 50 km in EV mode. There are also hybrid, battery charge, and GTE modes.

    Had the car for 4 month now. Due to my transport need i did visit a gas station on the 4th of december and again on the 12th of jan. I love the car. 50 km on e-power only works if you turns off the aircon and ventilation. But I have done 40 km several times without problems. You ends by saying it is not a BMW, no thanks god it is not ;-)

    You need aprox 2,5 hr high power charging/ 50 km of driving (the charging can be splitted over several times). if your driving pattern exceeds this it might not be the best soloution. The 2,5 hrs of high speed charging can be 4,5 hr charging at a normal 220V outlet.

    If you got a high power load box it takes 2,5 hr from empty to full. Normal 220v outlet 4,5 hrs from empty to full. You can charge from 20% to 80% in anpro 1 hr (box) 2 hrs (20v)

    I think everyone is missing the point with this car. For company car schemes it is the only viable hybrid estate at the moment. The 330e is not available in an estate and diesel equiv is almost double the tax and only going to get worse! Currently running a 3series GT 318 and this would cut my tax on half!

    Ok, we already know that Passat is not the most exciting car and we also know that all car manufacturers are lying when it comes to ev range. But the last line "it's a BMW" is just crap. Taking the current back-heavy 3 series which gives you less of everything except for 25 more hp for 10-15k more and calling it a better buy because of the name is just bad review.

    Sounds like a V8 Mustang to me.... this ain't coming to Canada....actually none of the Passat wagons come to Canada. I guess our American overlords deemed them irrelevant. SUVs are so much better. Sounds like you would go for simplicity on this one. The BMW 328d wagon comes here although that starts at 49.7k and the Audi allroad starts at 47.6k for the 2L turbo petrol 252hp mode. VW does bring the awd Golf wagon but they forgot to bring the good one...The Golf R. Nice review Marek!

    Glad to see it's not just me that thinks the VW DSG gearbox can be jerky, every time I've tested one I've found the same and been told it's my "style" of braking and driving effecting! In the end went for the BMW due to gearbox refinement

  • @MarekDrives

    @MarekDrives

    I suspect it may have something to do with efficiency settings. In VAG cars you can set the DSG to go into neutral whenever possible (coasting mode). Unfortunately I think this works independent of drive modes, so once coasting mode is activated, it will work in normal, eco (and possibly) sport. In certain situations this could give you this jerky feel, when you want to take advantage of a gap, when approaching a junction or a round about. In case of this particular car it is very likely DSG was affected by my colleagues, who tested the car before me. I'm sure there were quite a few 0-100km/h test runs, probably reving in neutral, and then engaging Drive.

    Marek Drives thanks for the response. interesting and certainly explains where it could be originating from, I have ordered and soon to receive the BMW 330e which out of the vehicles I tested including the Mercedes C350e felt a much better car and a finished version of a hybrid in terms of transmission change of the current offerings. The next few years should be a very interesting time for hybrids and even full EV cars. For me this type of vehicle suits my needs low commute distance, reasonable performance and works well in the UK in the way it's categorised as a company car it's actually cheaper for me than a BMW 116d efficientdynamics for example. Keep up the good work

    Thanks. I envy countries, where there are tax incentives to buy a certain type of car. Here in Poland you just negotiate the sticker prices with the dealer. I haven't tried the C 350 e. I didn't even know such a car existed, which shows you the state of (PH)EV market in Poland. I looked it up now, and the starting price is even higher, than that of BMW 330e. You made a good choice. I wish they offered a Touring version of 330e, because then I'd probably buy it regardless of incentives (or lack of them here).

    Marek Drives Really appreciate the response. I think both cars undoubtedly have been made to help with the fact they have to because of the performance cars and emissions produced. That's being said BMW have definitely a all round better finished product than Mercedes which I assume is the advantage in the "I division" existing. I have this morning been watching the CES 2017 footage from BMW, Toyota, Honda and Faraday Future (which is never heard of until today). Electric is definitely happening in a big way and this year should be interesting to see what happens, Hybrid Supercars demonstrate that performance doesn't have to suffer in fact it gains in torque. One speech that really stood out was the Toyota by Dr Gill Pratt on autonomous driving and how the cars on the road at moment the levels of autonomous driving the standards as to how safe is safe and what is classed as a good decision are both new and in some cases don't exist. That with that some levels of autonomous driving (level 2 and 3 I believe) are so hard to achieve they choose not to release models and work toward levels 4 but set no deadline as the risk of accidents and the guidelines around it either don't exist or aren't clear they can't put those "settings" in place so would rather wait for safety reasons, really worth watching

    A few months ago, during a Mercedes-Benz launch event I spent a lot of time talking to an autonomous driving engineer. He said MB (I guess it applies to most carmakers in general) doesn't want to scare clients with too much new tech. I am sure there is a relatively small group of clients, who are ready to try all the newest technology as soon as it is released, but many people just want to drive their cars from A to B, like they did for the last 30-40 years. Believe it or not, but I only recently introduced my father to satellite navigation in cars. He appreciates how it makes getting around easier, but is not comfortable with glancing at the screen, so he relies mostly on voice commands, which happen to be the weakest link, and most annoying feature of satnav :) For him to have a car drive from A to B by itself would be too much. And he is an engineer himself (in a different field though). Another concern carmakers have is safety and PR. The system has to be reliable, and operating it must be foolproof. It does not matter user makes a mistake. A dead user makes the news, and driver error may get lost among catchy headlines that an autonomous car killed its owner. Last, but not least is something the engineer did not say directly, but implied it: releasing a fully autonomous car today would leave no spectacular upgrades for the next facelift/new generation(s). It's like the iPhone. Incremental updates.

    @@simbukka yes, pure EVs are great for local work, just poor EV range with the associated anxiety....and an inadequate charging network here in the UK. ( I own an EV). Then there's the added complication of there being no pure EV estate available currently, or in the near future. So if you need the space, practicality and functionality that an estate car offers and provides the EV experience for local driving/commuting with a range anxiety eliminating ICE for lengthy road trips & motorway work, then this VW Passat GTE is a no-brainer. I personally would prefer the Skoda iv variant as it has a more interesting design style for my taste, and costs less than the VW.
