Just bought one a few weeks ago.Excellent car to drive, very fuel efficient, smooth and comfortable.Made me totally forget my former Bimmer 318i which was an expensive unreliable piece of crap.

The best ioniq review on KZread. I generally don't like the cynical approach of Marek but in this review, he is amazing. Entertaining! Welldone!

Driving the a Hybrid with standard wheels, doing 66 miles a day, I was able to get 77MPG during the summer months. During winter time it dropped to 72MPG but I did also have a slow puncture.

I like our Ioniq a lot more than I thought I would. We initially just purchased to save on fuel cost as my wife drives about a 1,000 miles a week, however it’s been such a joy to drive it has become our primary driver. I find that I put off my errands until the Ioniq is freed up not only to save on fuel, but just to have a bit of fun driving it. It’s no Miata mind you, but after driving full sized trucks and SUV’s it seems very sporty.

what real life mpgs do you get, and as a guestimate whats the fuel cost for the week?? Im considering getting one and commuting 500 miles a week for my job as opposed to moving to the middle of nowhere :(

I've just acquired a late '22 Ioniq, and your review is the fairest I've seen. A lot of reviewers have compared it unfavourably with the Prius. I like the solidity and smooth driving manners of the Ioniq, and after seeing all those reviews saying it hardly ever stays in EV mode, have already been surprised by how much time it does spend in electric mode alone.

I have one and I love it

Got the Hyundai hybrid Premium SE model recently. (2018 -UK) Loving it. Easily the best car I have ever had. Early days but averaging 62 mpg although I did have it in the sport mode a few times which makes it feel a different car again. Have to get used to a silent car on start up. Looks stunning in the platinum silver finish and much better looking than the Prius. Dual clutch automatic super smooth.

Good video. I am mulling over a PHEV as my next car. The Ioniq is one of the cars which I am considering.

I bought a new 2017 ioniq (blue) about a month ago and put 800 miles on it so far. I'm getting 63mpg consistently. One small issue is I had a plastic piece on the drivers seat break but will be fixed by the dealer. The sound level while driving is pretty loud because of the weigh saving insulation but overall I'm happy with it and especially the fuel savings

Just had an ionic as a courtesy car n was very pleased with it overall only 2 things I didn't like no rear wiper and a hideous handbrake on the floor so stupid it's unbelievable my car was averaging 54 mpg so very good economy found it to be well made from decent materials I'm gonna get one next time I change

If we compare the design between Prirus and Ioniq, there is no question, Ionic is beauty and Prirus disaster..

Unlikely. I waited 6 months to get this one.

Had the car for 4 weeks now, it's great all round. 2 things I don't like: Foot operated parking brake (should be electronic) Infinity sound system with subwoofer (Ford sony system without subwoofer much better) Very Audi on the controls which I do like.

The bottle trick (for LKAS or "auto pilot") actually works but you need to put the half liter bottle on the LEFT side, or use a one liter bottle on the right side ;)

Great review, I have this car but HATE the foot operated parking brake.... Hyundai need to rethink this and use Auto hold as with VW

Marek hi again. Just thought I would update the 35 IONIQ we took on at Australian Red Cross Society a year ago. Firstly did you notice that button on the lower drivers side dash (RHD) area that allows the power cell to restart the car if the normal battery goes flat. Edit: Sorry re-watched your review and the euro model seems to be missing this button on your (LHD) Model. Even Hyundai did not know this when I brought it to their attention. Fantastic, no more roadside assist re-start-ups just push the button. We have now taken the 35 Hyundai loaned pre-launch IONIQ onto fleet after a successful 12 month trial. We compared each new IONIQ directly back to the prior car driven by each departments prior vehicle, mainly Corolla or i30 hatches. In every case the IONIQ was reducing the fuel consumption by 40% to 45%. These vehicles are driven in varying driving conditions city and or just country across 3 east borne states of Australia that means great varying summer and winter temperatures and humidity. We are so pleased with their performance that we will take on 18 more IONIQ this year. I have tested the new corolla hybrid and it is very good also, but the IONIQ seems more easier to drive and get in and out of, which is important as we have an driver age range from 18 to 90 Years of age and mostly volunteers and passengers. Keep up the good reviews as I love your honest and direct approach including the niggles and small plusses that can make a difference to understanding a true ownership of multiple cars that need to reach across a very large divide of different drivers tastes that needs to fit as best as possible.

Marek hi Yes I am wanting to know this as we will have Kona EV in May I believe. We have asked Hyundai for an evaluation vehicle ASAP. Although hybrid is our main requirements due to the distances we travel. Up to 800 KLMS a day in some programmes.

Currently about to bull the trigger on a Leon st 1.8tsi auto, on Wednesday. I want a less thirsty car than I have now, the Leon would just seek into that, but this woulds at high 60s, could make up for any of its drawbacks. Which doesn't look many. Best get a drive before wed. Also the leon currently has a 4 to 6 month lead time 😥

kevin n +1 on the fully electric one. I'm curious what the effect of the different rear suspension is.

If I look at the eco rating at almost end of review it explains why the economy didn't match expectations. On fuelly the Hyundai and Toyota is very close. That is real life. other reviewers got it more than Toyota in real life

I’m assuming your Fuel economy was lower because it looks pretty cold there and also wet. Wet roads affect fuel economy and so does the winter. Not like you were driving on a sunny summer day with dry roads...

Informative and enjoyable review, with the usual pleasant touch of irony. Could I ask your opinion about braking effectiveness and feel? I tested the car and I was not convinced with the first part of braking with regenerative effect, giving me back a feeling of lack of braking power. Thanks

Thanks.I haven't noticed anything unusual in the way this car behaved upon braking. I also didn't see any additional eco mode, which could increase the power energy recuperation. That said, I saw a drive mode button next to the gear lever in some videos, so perhaps spec differs slightly from market to market.

Marek Drives I think the drive modes selection button is only available on the fully electric version (maybe the PHEV). For the hybrid, there are 2 driving modes: Eco (which is gear leaver in D), and Sport (Gear leaver pulled towards a driver, like in a BMW). Oh, and when driving, did you put in a destination into the navigation system? In that case, the car is more comfortable with more aggressive discharging / charging of the battery. I also felt the same thing at first with the brakes, but now I know why. You just may not be used to the car coasting, because there isn't any regen braking when you let go of the throttle. Therefore, I usually started braking a bit later and from higher speed than usual, making the braking harder as a result...

I'm getting 62 to 64 mpg in my Ioniq Blue (base trim level)

I appreciate your honesty! but what your saying, is if your a 6:9 ft basket ball player, dont go into the back seat, because you may suffer neck injury. and the fire dept will have to come and wedge you out! that being said, nice looking car,and cheap on gas! i missed this, did you say it can be an automatic ? how does it compare with the Honda Insight?

I know am viewing a 6 year old video. I do taxi on a 2019 ioniq hybrid. Andni get around 570 miles out of full tank fuel price 147.9 a liter. I wouldn't piss on prius if it was on fire 😅😅😅😅😅

How's the midrange acceleration? 265 nm should mean good passing speeds...

With fuel prices and energy prices rocketing I’m about to change my diesel BMW 3 GT for a Hybrid petrol and after looking for a suitable one I’ve decided to go for the Ioniq …… I’ll let you know how it goes

Marek Drives I think what Uri meant is if you could set the language of the infotainment and gauge cluster to English. It would be nice, but I would understand if it would add too much overhead to film those bits twice.

Oh, that! Actually this would mean about 10-15 shots x 2, and could get tricky during edit, if I forget to change them. If the message on the screen would be particularly important, I'd change the language. Otherwise I assume everyone gets the general idea.

I also tested this model and being taller than Marek I had more than enough head room in the back, so Marek must have a really long back and really short legs? :)

Good review. I am a V6 3 Litre fan. These Hybrids dont make the cut.

Why is there no rear wiper......Honda did that with the Civic and it was a disaster and now they fit one,

My spec sheet archive for the cars I reviewed doesn't go that far. I suspect it was on 17"s. The smaller the wheel, the better the efficiency.

I drive a 2017 blue drive ionic....Iam concerned with the circulation option...when I turn it on it only stays on for one to one and half mins. Is this normal? When I brought up my concern with my dealership they said it was normal...Ive been driving this car now for two years...the first year I didn't have an issue with the circulation option...fo you know anything about this concern I have? I would appreciate to get some feed back on this

I bought one beginning of May 2019. She didn't come with spare tire. I had to order a kit and they charged me for it. 😡 And I have Android phone which the car won't charge unless I hook a wire. Map does not work unless I hook my phone to the car.

Spare tire is not included in standard package. Integrated navigation and wireless charging systems are optional in Limited trim.

wait.. did you say the Hyundai IONIQ has a smaller trunk then the Prius.. this goes against everything I've heard

You are correct. I found the old script and I have no clue where I got the "60 litres smaller" from.

Get the electric version.

I drive my Ioniq with no care for economy and can't get it to go above 4.5 litres per 100....mostly I average 4 .1 litres per hundred over 45,000, k's No idea how u saw over 5 litres per 100

Depends on the road conditions. Here in Poland people tend to drive aggressively even in traffic. Then again, this was 5 years ago, so things may have changed since then on Polish roads, and in the car.

Kinda surprised by the headroom in the back. Still like the car, but...a bit of a shame.

It seems IONIC is more expensive than equivalent spec Prius. We also have the cheaper Auris in Poland. Then comes resale value of Hyundai vs. Toyota... I was impressed to find out that there is a Hybrid Sonata. Is IONIC based on the i30?

In my English reviews I use German prices. In Poland Ioniq Hybrid starts at 23.7k euro, Prius starts at 28.4k euro (PLN/EUR exchange rate provided by Google).

Shame the hand brake is NOT a hand brake but a left foot parking brake!, and if you need an alteration because of disability, then you will have to put up with a hand brake that is situated where the left foot brake is, in the foot well, (in a right hand drive version) making the handbrake lever awkwardly placed in the foot well, rub against your left leg! NOT comfortable at all! What a shame that they cant give us an electric parking brake eh?

The opening jokes at the head of this video would only make sense if you were both blind and led entirely by lazy group-think prejudice. This car looks pretty good - no Aston Martin but have you seen... any Prius, ever made? The fact that this thing is not vomit inducing is refreshing and have you seen what BMW are doing with some of their range lately? - people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

The boot on the Prius is a lot smaller than the Ioniq! Not bigger

Ride is unsettled and quite noisy especially for those in the back seat, tire roar is always present and is intrusive, and interior though very well equipped, feels too plasticky and cheap. On the plus side, styling is normal, compared to the wired Prius, trunk size is good as is passenger space and gear is normal, rather than irritating cvt.

Hyundai Ioniq is a cheap korean product, with a number of misconceptions. First of all, DCT is the worst automatic that you can get on this planet. It's bound for failure along the way and looking at Tucson DCT recalls in the US, the Ioniq will be next. I don't know why reving up with shift brake seems sportier for some people, but Hyundai successfully made an DCT car with more HP which accelerates slower than the Prius with e-CVT. In German Auto tests, the Ioniq consumed more fuel than a 2009 Prius or Honda Insight! And on top of this, the Hyundai 1.6L engine is plauued with inhomogeneous combustion, creating emission problems on higher speeds.

Indeed. Not only that, the double clutch layshaft gearbox system is more complex than the Toyota eCVT, which is likely to keep working for a while. I know some don't like the way the engines run at constant speed while delivering the power, but one soon gets used to it. More like handling a diesel-electric train than a traditional car, but the main aim is to run the engine at an optimum speed for it's efficiency, or not at all in Toyota hybrids.

@@johnkeepin7527 The Hyundai 6 speed dual clutch box has proven to be very reliable. I have now owned both and the Hyundai is much nicer to drive than the CVT toyota.
