2017 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid Review and Road Test In 4K UHD!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Hyundai's hybrid doesn't just beat the Prius in MPG, it is one of the few no-compromises hybrid cars in America. The low starting price means that the average compact car shopper in America would break even in under two years while enjoying a larger cargo area and (oddly enough) better handling. That makes the Ioniq not just my top hybrid car pick for 2017, but my top compact sedan pick as well. I didn't see that coming.
Whether you're looking at a Corolla or Elantra or a Prius or C-Max, you should drop by the Hyundai dealer and check the Ioniq out.

I've been a Toyota guy all my life and owned several Priuses before....until recently. Appointment set for the 2019 Prius LE pickup but moments before that I stopped by the local Hyundai dealership right next to the Toyota dealership where I supposed to pick up my new Prius, I found the Ioniq Limited by chance then things completely changed since. I test drove the Ioniq and loved the design, its full list of tech package ..convinced me to dump my Prius then jumpship for good for the 2019 Hyundai Ioniq Limited with ultimate package included. Words can't describe how much I love it compared to all my Priuses, not that my Priuses are bad, but the new 2019 Hyundai Ioniq has tons of things I wish my Priuses had. Bottom line, I'm extremely happy with my decision in getting the Ioniq instead of the Prius. Great job Hyundai!!

The Ioniq is the whole package to me, namely high fuel efficiency, rear independent suspension, enormous cargo room (even more with folded rear seats), dual clutch transimmision (not CVT YEAH!!!), lifetime battery warranty, decent look (compares to Prius), Apple Carplay/Android Auto, and most important of all THE PRICE! I'm convinced!!!

I consider the dct to be one of the few downsides of the ioniq. Dislike of the "cvt feel" is mostly based on ignorance - that droning is the sound of your engine delivering maximum power or efficiency continuously, it is a good thing.

I'm not that against CVT I know what it's capable of, if someone invented a CVT for bicycle I would definitely buy one. But for cars, I'm in the European camp who still prefer gears. The only Japanese car maker that still use gears today is Mazda.

yan-Deriction exactly! the e-cvt of the Toyota hybrid system is actually very efficient and reliable. No DCT to worry about. Funny thing is, car makers are starting to have 9-10speed gearboxes which is to emulate a cvt keeping the engine in its most efficient range!

I bought a 2017 Ioniq hybrid and have driven about 800 miles now and I'm getting around 63-64 MPG! (sports mode for acceleration and eco all other times) I love it except I have had 2 minor small plastic parts slightly break. the seat "lifter" handle is loose and the driver's side door handle (where the keyhole is hidden) trim is starting to fall off. but I'm covered with a 125,000 bumper to bumper warranty so not too worried. Update: 1300 miles AVERAGE 65 mpg. Don't know how but that's what the on board display shows

After about 2 months of research we finally worked up the gumption to step foot in the dealership today to buy a 2020 Prius. For the sake of having an informed decision we test drove the Prius and Ioniq back-to-back. We immediately preferred the Hyundai. We felt Ioniq had superior handling, visibility out of the car, more comfortable seats, more useable cargo space, better general ergonomics and intuitiveness of design. It objectively changed our mind even though we were biased toward the Prius. I wish I found this video earlier because it probably would have saved me 2 months of reading. It also was nice to have my suspicions confirmed about the handling being better than the Prius (as if the Prius set such a high bar in the first place). As a package and price the Ioniq is superior. I drive a Miata and a WRX as well.

People think that the only reason to buy a hybrid is the fuel economy. While fuel economy is a big plus, cruising range is also a very real consideration. I couldn't help noticing the miles to empty readout (557). With that kind of range I can drive from Frederick Maryland to Portland, Maine (approximately 550 miles) on just one tank of gas. These cars are the solution to the range anxiety of the plug-ins.

Nice to finally have someone recommend a hybrid not just as a hybrid, but as a car. Its has always been my opinion anyone who is looking for a compact econobox for commuting, road trips etc should consider the prius, and I also think the prius handily beats every other compact in the used car market. However now the ioniq is proving that hybrids are not only competitive in the used car market, but also as new cars, and that's fantastic.

Excellent Review. I especially appreciated the comparison to other compact cars. We have been looking for a comparable replacement for our Passat TDI which is no easy task, especially when it comes to cabin/trunk space, overall interior width and the extraordinary rear seat leg room. We just test drove the IoniQ and was surprisingly impressed with how immediately comfortable we felt. In many ways it was similar to our TDI. With two boys and large baseball equipment bags it seems like the Ioniq has enough trunk space to accommodate. The major con you did not talk about is the visibility. Our Passat is already poor because of the low roof line and headrests but the Ioniq is just as bad, maybe worse. The backup camera was obviously a must to compensate for the rear visibility which is probably why it comes standard. Also, the cross traffic warning is a must with the back window and rear visibility. Overall, the Ionic was surprisingly fun to drive and the sport mode really made a difference. The dual gear transmission is what makes this car great over any car with a CVT transmission.

Everything from Hyundai is great we have Accent 2008 (no problems so far) and the Santa Fe XL 2017 and it is very comfortable. Great quality for the price!

Thanks so much Alex. I've been waiting for this review. The one thing you specifically mentioned was the space under the cargo floor that can accommodate a spare tire. This is so important to me that I will not buy a car without a spare tire, or at least space for one under the floor. I watched many video reviews of the Hyundai Ioniq that skipped right over that feature. I even sent email to Hyundai Customer Service who (unbelievably) said there isn't room for a spare. Go figure. We are on our second Prius. They are great cars but Toyota is taking them in directions that I don't like. We didn't buy the latest model but found a new 2015 model so we wouldn't have to deal with the more recent models which I don't like. I was wondering what I would buy next as I don't think it will be a Prius. I've always hated the centered gauge cluster of the Prius. I'm glad to see the traditional gauges of the Ioniq. I also hate the new white accents inside the latest Prius. I also don't like that Toyota knocked about 2" off the height of the car and designed a more laid back driver's seat because of the loss of height. I prefer a more vertical seating position and was attracted to the Kia Niro for that feature. I still need to know the seat height of the Ioniq and how the driver's position compares with the Prius. Outside looks don't phase me much. That should be obvious due to the fact that I've purchased two Prius which aren't good looking cars. Still the Ioniq is eye catching and certainly beats the latest Prius mess. I really feel I am ready to make the switch from Prius to Ioniq or less so perhaps the Niro. Thanks again for your excellent reviews.

If I was car shopping I would choose either the Niro or Ioniq hands down. Could we get a comparison between those two? Even though they share a lot in common, they're also quite different from one another.

DCTs are basically manual trans (but shifted by the computer). Manuals have a higher reliability than automatics or planetary gears (Prius or Toyota/Ford hybrids) .

@@yggdrasil9039 not to mention that Toyota has a great track record with their prius(s). People have hit 300k and 400,000 miles on the prius. Not saying that Hyundai or others cant but Toyota is the only one that has proved it.

I just bought one of these and love it (and love this review too)! But I will say in order for this car to really pass the test of time and beat the Prius over time the DCT will have to last up to 250k miles as is the case for the Prius transmission. I love the DCT, but have to say that is my only concern in terms of durability and beating the Prius in that regard too.

Jeff B How do you like the Ioniq after several months? I test drove and really liked it-except for the rollback I experienced when stopped on hills. There was no hold when I took my foot off the brake. What’s that about?
