Last week I asked you what you wanted to know about the Hyundai Ioniq Plug-in Hybrid. In this video I try and include as many answers to your questions. From questions about range to questions about if I can get a bike in the boot !

    This is one of those cars that most car enthusiasts ignore yet it is an excellent, practical family car which is very affordable and very cheap to run. It's not a high performance car but it is perfectly nice and pleasant to drive at normal speeds on public roads. I even think it is a good looking car.

    We’ve had our Ioniq Hybrid Premium SE coming up for four years. It’s been excellent. No exaggeration, mpg has been anything from mid 50’s to just over 80 mpg. We don’t drive slowly. Yes that footbrake is daft, like older Mercs but after a few weeks we didn’t even think about it. A very cheap car to run. Now have a Tucson N Line S Hybrid on order, not as economical but nicer to drive and with a bit more space. Late to the party on this old post but thought I’d reply to your post 😁

    @@nickwebb9290 If I may ask: we have been looking at and test driving the Toyota Prius (2016-2023 model) and like its space, comfort and efficiency. Problem is, in the Netherlands there are very few available and prices are very high. Have you ever had the chance to test Prius against your Ioniq, and if so, would you say the comfort of the seats and driving comes close? I ask because my back is bad and it hurts in my current Honda Insight.

    I bought Ioniq 3 months ago and its amazing. this car will get 125MPG without harldly trying. I can also pass a semi at 140 Km/h no problem.I do that with the guage showing 3 bars on eco.this car gets 55 mpg on the highway and 70 city hybrid mode and it gets better the more you can charge it. my electric bill has not changed notably, it went up $1 the first month.. so its like my coffee maker. Good job on saving the planet and my wallet. And I can still take any desired trip I want...Las Angeles or Vancouver.

    how much charge does it recuperate in hybrid mode....can you recover most of the battery charge on longer hwy trip? Essentially wondering how usable EV mode is if you don't want to plug it in at all.

    Drogos79 If a person cares not to plug in a PHEV, why buy one? The Ioniq comes also as a hybrid, no charging port. Otherwise, it’s wasted $$$. Thanks

    Never mind Lane Departure Warning, it has Active Lane Keeping Assist. Which means it steers itself on the motorway. Which combined with active cruise control means for a very very relaxing drive...

    I'm slightly biased, as I work at a Hyundai dealership, but I have to admit, these are brilliant for what they are. The amount of tech, and the reliability and quality is very good. They are absolutely numb to drive though, but they are not pretending to be sporty. They are practical, but the boot floor is quite high because of the batteries. They are very comfy to drive, and the infotainment, and controls are brilliant. Would I have one ? No, because I'm a petrolhead and like something sporty, but if I just wanted a very well kitted out car with extremely good tech, then yes.

    Today I filled up the gas tank and the battery and the range was 980 KM... that is just sick, from a 1.6L engine and a 43L tank. To get this more into perpective you will get 1500-2000 on a tank of gas that will cost you less than $45. So this means that you can get to the North pole from the equator, 10000 Km on less fuel that I burn in the company truck in 1 day.

    Thorough review mate, nicely done. We've got a test drive booked over the weekend in a couple of weeks and must say I'm really looking forward to it now. I agree with you that if money was no object then the Panamera would be the PHEV to go for though.

    We just picked up the 2019 Limited in grey, and we love everything about it. It runs so smooth and the features are very useful. We got rid of our POS 2012 Ford Focus and I don’t miss it one bit. Our mileage is pretty good so far. I looked at it earlier and have about 435ish miles driven, and about 240 calculated left. I drive about 15 miles per day during the week, and at current sit at 73% economic, 26% normal and 1% aggressive. All in all, this is one of my favorite cars I have ever driven. It lacks pick up, but u still won’t get old people blasting past u flipping u off for being too slow. I tend to drive to work on all electric, and hybrid on the way home. I tend to charge at work for about 3 hours 1-2 times a week ($4 each charge session). Few minor gripes. Back hatch window is split in half by a fairly thick bar. It always defaults to electric when u start the car...I tend to forget I am driving on electric and deplete the battery when I don’t want to. One other positive as the video says, I find myself a much more mellow driver...I used to drive like a bat out of hell in LA traffic and road rage...that is no longer much the case. The better perk this car has that no one really ever seems to bring up though. Hyundai gives the original owner of their Ioniq hybrid plugin (not sure if the whole line up), a lifetime warranty on the electric battery. That is a big perk to have. This car is not for everyone, but if u have considered buying a Prius Prime over this, you are doing yourself a disservice. We test drove the Honda Clarity, nice ride but at $8k more, and same gas mileage offering, the Ioniq is better (not to mention I hate the rear wheel cover extending over the tires. The Prius Prime was less than impressive in our eyes, and the interior was a wonderland of 5 or so different plastic types (along with a white plastic steering wheel highlight that made 0 sense when the car was black outside). The only contender was the Kia Rio. It was quite nice and very spacious...but that lifetime battery warranty was hard to beat out.

    For overtaking, if you pull the left gear paddle it puts it into sport for you and pre shifts down. I’ve never had trouble overtaking, my previous car was a 120d sport auto for reference.

    You would have achieved a better mpg if you had plugged it properly the first night and tried harder at charging it at work. The mpg result really depends on how you use it. If you only do full ev everyday it's almost infinite. What will limit that is when you go on vacation or in winter. It seems that the ac is electric but heating is only with the engine so if you park outside in winter you'll need fuel. A way to improve mpg is to avoid using ev with a full tank. It's a complete change from usual petrol car. Usually you just fill it up. Here you should only add fuel when you really need it.

    I have an Ioniq hybrid SEL, not the plug in version and i can say that whilst in sport mode via the shifter or the paddle shifters it is very easy to downshift and gas it to overtake other cars even on the highway starting at a 60mph cruising speed. Cruising at 60 the car is in 6th gear. Simply let off the throttle, shift to 5th, gas it, then shift back to 6th.

    If you want to minimize the ice use, turn off the ac on the off button. I do that with mine so it doen't heat the cabin the last km home. I have had mine for over a month and I am satisfied.

    A zero to 60 time of 8.3 is respectable for a car that size and its power plant. Not every car needs to break 5 sec zero to 60. Most family sized diesel cars are in the 8 -9 sec range, 0-60. Therefore to be fair I wouldn't call it under-powered when compared to the average vehicle on the road. Great Channel- keep up the good work.

    I don't make a lot of money and I have a bad back. For me, I need something that drives smoothly and doesn't break the bank. Having that kind of range makes it less of a hassle to drive it in the city and not feel range anxiety when driving long distance.

    0 to 60 just isn't something I even consider tbh. I'm hardly racing the neighbours down tiny roads This being said, torque is worth more imo. I found that my Prius would get up to speed quite a lot faster than my Yaris (petrol, not hybrid). The Prius has a slower quoted 0-60 too

    I agree. There's too much emphasis on the 0 to 100kph figure. For normal driving in traffic, a normal 0 to 60 kph time is about 16 seconds, so you will never have to worry about keeping up.

    Hi there, first let me say what an excellent format this video was. I really liked the fact that as a means of helping us to 'know' the car a little more, you methodically went through viewers questions. That came across really well. Is it quick enough? Well that's for potential owners to decide not me; but having test-driven the full EV version I found that to be very sporty, loads of grunt for A-road overtakes - it drives live a big-engine uber saloon !! Range on the full EV in the real world? I achieved 223 kms so about 145 mls so more than enough for normal daily driving for most peeps then charge it overnight at home. Cost for a full charge? - about 3 euros so about £2.50 - to do 140 mls. The car pays for itself by comparison to a petrol/diesel car and is better to drive, IMO.

    The single over-arching characteristic of all EV's is this massive and immediate surge of torque thrusting you forward. Even in the Leaf and the Ioniq that are relatively reasonably priced cars; but when Tesla Model 3 comes to Europe in it's basic spec. ALL other cars below about £30,000 will be simply swept away - it's that GOOD.

    If your daily drive is about 25 to 35 miles a day then yes you can get the 200 miles per gallon they claim. That’s what we do and though the week the engine hardly fires up. Weekends is when we use the hybrid mode we have the Kia Niro PHEV

    I used to use the sport mode, purely for overtaking, on the Prius tbh. It worked pretty well

    Thanks for this review this car is on my short list, another car review channel said the standard hybrid was the better option. The foot parking brake is also used on Infiniti cars and was on some old Mercedes cars and I quite like it however it is no good for handbrake turns 😂. A really good 2 video review 👍

    Nice try Terryboy but unfortunately the only pice of real science came from this guy is is blaming our modern-day lifestyles, not EV's: "According to Theodore P. Metsis, Ph.D., an electrical, mechanical, and environmental engineer from Athens, Greece, modern conventional gas- and diesel-powered automobiles incorporate many EMF-emitting devices. "EMFs in a car in motion with brakes applied + ABS activation may well exceed 100 mG. Adding RF radiation from blue tooth, Wi Fi, the cell phones of the passengers, the 4G antennas laid out all along the major roads plus the radars of cars already equipped with, located behind, left or right of a vehicle, the total EMF and EMR fields will exceed any limits humans can tolerate over a long period of time."

    Hello. You can’t beat extended drives. Ya get to see how they handle and perform on local roads as opposed to roads near a dealership for an hour. I had to look twice as I thought it was a Tesla back end.

    Did a test drive myself in one. if you want full power for overtaking etc, then you need to reserve some battery - so you have combined power. Then it functions like a 2 litre - otherwise, well its a 1.6

    The heat doesn't work in EV mode. Hyundai didn't include the electric element and other equipment to do so for weight and cost saving. The AC should work though

    No, it is because you need good source of energy to heat car when it is cold, such as gasoline (high density source of energy). Battery is a hybrid will be drained VERY quickly when on EV + heat. Heating car, home or your meal takes tremendous amounts of energy.

    In Finland, we have bikes with easy-removable front wheel. It helps a lot in putting bike in the trunk.

    Ped, i really appreciate this review as it's hard to get some nuts and bolts details about this relatively new model. I have to say that that second wooden post in the garage distracted me, though... maybe shore that thing up? So i was disappointed but not surprised to see the giant 29er bike wouldn't fit. I know a guy who got the Niro instead because he could put his bike in upright. What i wish you had done is take off the wheel and shown how well it fits like that.

    It’s an old farm and that post it an old telegraph pole 😳😂 We have plans to change it 👍 My bike would have gone it if I’d taken the wheel off. I use a roof rack or tow bar rack 😎

    i have a Kia Niro PHEV which is basically the same tech but with a different body shape. I believe I can read my experiences across to the Ioniq. So to expand on some of your answers.... The 2.5 hrs to charge only applies using the type 2 connector. Using the standard 3 pin 13A plug, it charges at 10A and takes a shade over 4hrs to charge. Also in response to your question about heating...Unbelievably, it does not have an electric heater, so it has to run the ICE to generate the heat. Incidentally, I am averaging over 100mpg... a mixture of 20-30 mile journeys, and others of 100-120 miles. 68 mpg is achievable without using EV mode, and 200mpg plus is achievable if journeys are limited to 40-50 miles between charges. But only if you avoid using the heater. I find myself using the heated seats instead. Agree about your positive comments re adaptive cruise control, but I also like the way the lane keep assist steers the car on dual carriageways. It does not fight the driver- it takes virtually no force on the wheel to over-ride it, and does require hands on the wheel, but does make the long drives less tiring. Sport mode comes in 2 flavours. in EV mode it holds the lower gears for longer, and acceleration from rest is better than the manufacturer states...You didn't really comment on the 8.5s you achieved being 2s faster than spec. In HEV mode, sport mode requires the shift to be completed manually by moving the selector forwards/backwards. My Niro doesn't have a rev counter, and without one, it is diificult to use that mode effectively.

    The biggest thing to consider is the cost of electric power compared to the cost of gasoline / petro. My power is 1/2 cost of gas & I do about 1/2 of my driving in EV. So 1/2 of 1/2 means I save 25% on my fuel cost.

    I enjoyed this video!! I own one of this and I want to comment about range: in summer, one 44lts tank will give me close to 2600Kms and in winter 1600-1800 kms, not bad. Note: I drive 50-60kms 6 days a week and one day about 140kms, I charge my car every night. If I get rid of that ONE day a week driving 140kms, then my 44lts gas tank could last a couple of months and my electric bill has increase about 20-25 $/month. At the end of the day, my PHEV limited version will cost me $10,000 in eight years (the down payment)... the monthly payment has been compensated with the gas savings in running 2,200kms per month. Not bad!

    @@PetrolPed that was a reflection about car price... is $10,000 expensive for the limited version? I guess not. On the other hand the EV version maintenance is limited to "inspections" , tire rotation, tire replacement, coolant replacement (once every .... 2 yrs? Can't remember) and that's it, no spark plug, timing belt or chain, oil change, filter. To be consider on the "cost to own" calculations

    @@mchale19 I think the warranty is transferable. It is over 72,000kms now. I love it even more now with current gas prices. 45,000 miles

    Ha ha, enjoyed this, as some good questions asked. MTBs and saloon cars? Of course you will need to take the front wheel out (it`s not difficult!) and in your case (not mine at 5 ft 2 ") you may need to drop the seatpost. It looks ideal for local driving, taking children to school, shopping, but for regular long journeys, I`m not sure. I test drove an Audi hybrid, seemed very nice, would be interested if you drove some others to compare with the Hyundai. I will not be buying one, as I see technology in E-cars developing fast, and will wait for now, as long as I don`t pop me clogs !

    I switched from a 136HP diesel Mercedes to a Ioniq EV and have not regretted. The pure EV version is slightly faster than the hybrid and plug-in versions and to charge up the battery from empty to full takes around 10 hours with the 220V "grandma charger" in real life. When I drove Mercedes I had that feeling of being taken from behind, but I should smile aka. it was like a robbery on a bright day. Now the workshop does not laugh anymore....

    A good review, but the one question I wanted an answer for was one the fuel economy. Your answer was that it was, "... Very impressive", which gives me no information at all. You just had to read it from the display.

    Interesting..... I own a 56 plate Gen 2 Prius, I always get 500+ miles to the tankful, sometimes 550. As of today the dash shows 62.7mpg. I don't have to plug it in because it charges itself and it costs £10 a year to tax. It IS a bit like a wet lettuce accelerating onto a motorway, I won't deny that and it would be great if it was more responsive. I think the later generations are definitely more snappy to drive. It's definitely an acquired driving style, if I stamp on the throttle like you did in the Ioniq the car will make a hell of a din and not really do much else, however if I sqeeeeze the pedal down I can get it to hustle along quite well. It will sit at 70mph all day on the motorway and is quite relaxing to drive and it does have cruise but obviously not adaptive. I would like to upgrade to a Gen 3 but unfortunately the funds are not there but I haven't seen another petrol car of that era that will do 60+ to the gallon. The Prius also has a "foot" handbrake which I am now used to but yes it is a pain, when I stop at traffic lights I like to go to neutral and pull the handbrake but in the Prius it is just too much of a faff so I sit there holding the brake pedal down which I'm sure must annoy people behind. Strangely that is the recommended way to drive it.

    I quite like the foot brake. It gives you a bit more space tbh. The second gen Prius is quite slow to accelerate but the third gen is pretty good. I ultimately ended up going backwards and selling the Prius to my dad, because I barely drive. Kinda pointless owning a hybrid / PHEV if I barely use it

    Been seriously considering an Ioniq Electric (full EV) to replace my mk7 Golf 1.4 petrol, but just realised the 'parking' brake is foot operated. That's so old-tech it breaks the deal for me, sadly. The Golf has an electronic parking brake which I absolutely love. Makes driving (stop/start traffic jams) much more chilled and relaxing.

    Interesting review Pete. The car isnt for me though, just removes the enjoyment of driving for me. It would be a good second car for my wife. Jaunts to the shops or for the kids taxi service. I'll stick to something a little sporty.

    Why questions for the Tesla? It's a different car. Tesla boasts enough range while ioniq only 180km (the solely electric version). The right question is if you've ever driven a Prius.

    You could not be bothered to plug it in????????????????? How much of an effort does that take? I have a Hyundai Kona Electric and it takes me all of 5 seconds to plug it in. You rather go to a gas station. How much time does that take out of your day? I think with this Ioniq PHEV when your doing a lot of city driving and the occasional road trip, you are going to save a lot on gas. Regarding the bike inside, I'll just say get a bike rack. No problem. Showed the car to my wife but she does not like the small rear window and think it will impede her vision. We will take a test drive at the local dealer and see. Thanks for the review.     So I'm considering buying an EV or a PHEV. This car will primarily be used for commutes to work (20 miles round trip), but occasional longer journeys out of town. I feel like the PHEV is cheaper but the fact that I'll have to plug it in everyday or every other day in order to take advantage of the 28 miles in the battery is annoying. With an EV I only have to plug in once a week or two. I guess I'll end up likely going with the plug-in hybrid rather than the full electric because it's cheaper, it just kind of sucks how often a plug-in hybrid will need to be plugged in in order to take advantage of its battery capacity.

    I you can try and calculate the total cost of ownership over say 2 or 3 years. You might find the EV works out cheaper in the long run for that kind of journey profile :-)

    I just leased Ioniq Hybrid blue, all is well, except I really hate the dashboard! Because its light colored and has different shapes it reflects on the front glass and obscures my view. So much so I was about to run someone over because the reflection of the dashboard on the glass is toooo much, especially when its a sunny day or headlights from approaching cars hits you. I'm not sure how they missed this part but its a safety issue. I called service dep to order a dash board mat or cover but they said we don't carry one. Any advise of how this can be resolved?

    I'd really like you to do a piece on the BMW 330E. It's really strange that BMW don't promote it more, to the tune when i went to get one the dealer even asked me am i sure i don't want a 330d? It's pretty similar with the range etc. from your last video on the ioniq. To be honest like you said 20ish miles is crap but i do 16ish a day so last time i put fuel in it was july 3 months ago. I tend to top up £10 in fuel now and then not £50-60 all the time. Also if you want the full on "driving machine" as bmw state it is there it moves quick. Grab one petrol ped and see what you think i'd be interested. If you can't get a trial from a dealer i'd be happy for you to come take mine out for a spin. Oh and the pluging it in every night is a issue it really isn't, its like having a petrol station at home but 1/10th of the price its awesome.

    @@kennybolo7564 Depends how you buy a car, i know not everyone buys cars outright, that is an issue with the starting price. However if you buy a car PCP which a large amount of people do here in the UK, the monthly spend on PCP is a little higher but if you save £100 on the fuel and the PCP is £70 more you still save £20 (£10 electric)due to the fuel saving. Also you are buying a car which you expect to replace in three years (as PCP usually dictates) This trickles down since my bother recently bought a 2.5 year old 330e (after seeing mine) for £16K which is about the same as a 2.5 year old 330i. Next company car drivers, as well as the massive BIK saving they get as it is rated at 49 so i think 7% BIK they will also change at 3 years and so it becomes equal price at 3 years. For anyone who is in the market for a fast, reliable, well equipped and cheap to run car right now 1st gen 330e's are about as good as it gets

    @@kennybolo7564 Man you have hit the nail on the head. So i have to replace this 330e in October, not my choice just the way my company works. So where do i go now? I have to put my order in soon. I'd like an Ipace or a Tesla model 3 but in reality i can't get one by October. So i just go for a 330e again. Nope can't do that because they are about to do a refresh and so thats not on the books yet. Kona, Niro? Nope because they don't have instant stock. Leaf well just no, if they can leave their app not working for 3 months thats not good. Zoe no to small i have 3 kids. So i cant wait i have to put my order in by march for my company mandated refresh in October. What do i do now?

    I wouldn't be surprised if the PHEV outsold the EV in Australia because of the range issue. The EV is only ever going to be good for within cities or between local urban areas like Sydney-Wollongong, Sydney-Newcastle, Melbourne-Geelong, Melbourne-Ballarat, Brisbane-Gold Coast etc. But the PHEV is basically going to give you (just, if you drive economically) Sydney-Melbourne in one go. Plus 2 and a bit hours to charge is fantastic.

    yeah I'm in Brissy and my next car will most likely be the PHEV i have a 2010 Toyota Camry hyrbid and in a couple of years I will need to update, and the Ioniq Plug in looks like a very attractive option. Hopefully pickup a second hand one for around $30k by then.

    Does the petrol engine remain on full-time when using the heater? Or does it switch on to warm up and generate heat, then switch off until unable to heat the cabin to the desired temp, then switch back on? Basically, if I'm driving primarily with the heater on, is this no more economical than a petrol engined car?

    tricky dicky you can drive far in this it’s a plug in not full electric meaning if you run out of electric the car recharges the battery plugin it into a outlet is a option

    Beautiful wall in the beginning of the video. Is that part of your home? With regard to the footbrake, I've had several cars with a foot brake. A.) I rarely used it. B.) You get used to it after driving the car for a month or so. Also just noticed you have a camera on top of the car? If I'm not mistaken that's probably an MPG killer.

    Hi PP, I'm still not quite clear about control of EV mode. You say that the car maintains the battery at a certain level, so the engine will kick in to keep it topped up with power, but what if you don't want this? What if you want to run the EV only and want to drain the battery almost to zero deliberately. I'm thinking of the situation where you are approaching a big 20 km downhill run where you are going to be able to recharge it for free using the potential energy of your height above sea level being transformed into kinetic energy bowling down the hill? Can you force the car to go EV till you get to the edge of the downhill run, even to the point where the battery is about to drop to zero?

    Not sure you can. If you want that then buy the pure EV. Once the battery level reaches a certain point the car puts itself into Hybrid mode. I don't think there is a way to override this.

    Right. OK. What about when you tried to get 256mpg in your previous video though? Didn't you force it to stay in EV for as long as possible? How did you do that and at what point in the battery level of the PHEV does the car shift to hybrid mode? Cheers the EV looks good but the range is not really suitable for Australian driving outside of the cities.

    Hi, I have mine set in EV mode (like many people I imagine) and it stays there and eventually drains the battery, then when battery is nearly empty it switches to hybrid mode. Most days I get home before the battery is drained and plug in, so I get very close to 100% EV driving.

    The phrase "Quoted figure from Hyundai" keeps cropping up and kind of mocked. Aren't Hyundai forced to do a standard test and quote it? It's the test that's not suitable for PHEV's and that's not Hyundai's fault so not sure why they are getting shade for that.

    Yes you can, car has an onboard scheduler for heating. Fantastic car for people who typically do under 50miles a day, you can get close to 100% electric without any range anxiety, plus save plenty on fuel cost

    For me this type of vehicle is neither one thing or another. The only reason hybrids are out there is because in the main battery technology is struggling to give a real world usable range. Once the motor industry can manufacture a reasonably priced vehicle with about a 300 mile range, electric vehicles will really take hold. Until then most folk will be very sceptical of electric cars with hybrids being a bit of an electric fudge. I think cars like the new Hyundai Kona EV have now set the new standard and you will see all hybrids fall by the wayside. I hope Pete you will be able to give a full review of the new Kona EV as this sets (with the bigger battery pack) the new benchmark for EV range.

    If the car is in park. Why even mess with the hand brake? If it was a stick shift, then the brake is needed just in case it slips out of gear. But otherwise, the brake doesn’t need to be used.

    If you took the front wheel of you might fit the mountain bike in Pete,maybe 😂 For a standard family car it’s ok but if your a petrol head like me which I know you are,on the other hand if your a two car family it’s a good 2nd choice.The foot handbrake I came across you couldn’t see it.Had to bend my head down to see it 😫 Give it 30 years they will probably crack all electric cars with great performance.

    Many adaptive cruise systems stop working at a minimum speed. To be honest, I'm not sure about this one as I didn't try it in stop start traffic :-(

    @@PetrolPed I know its an English thing but Ive never used my foot brake in 7 years since I had the car. Good informative vids though.

    I am looking for a battery electric to replace my 2011 Civic. I think a better hybrid than this one would be the Chevy Volt-not sure what name it is selling under in the UK,or if it is sold there at all. The Hyundai plug in has only a 39 mile range on batteries alone,if I remember correctly from Petrol Ped's video,while the Volt has a 50 mile all electric range,which is adequate for most people's daily commutes. The Hyundai Kona electric I am looking at has a 415 km range on a charge,which is much more than I need for daily driving.
