Volkswagen Passat 2020 review

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Is the refreshed VW Passat a great family car? The Passat competes with other traditional wagons like the Mazda 6, Peugeot 508, and of course the Skoda Octavia and Skoda Superb. With a subtle facelift outside, some engine tweaks and better cabin tech, the Volkswagen Passat wagon is now an even better SUV alternative. In this video, a review of the 2020 Volkswagen Passat 140TSI Business Wagon, Tom drives this VW estate car, looking into its dynamics, comfort, practicality and value for money.

    Correction: in the video, I refer to a space saver spare. Happily, the Passat actually carries a full size 18” spare wheel. My thanks to the eagle-eyed commenters who noticed this. -Tom

    Just bought a used Passat wagon (2018 Comfortline) at the EOFY. I have to say it is a product that as complete as it can be at this price. Compared with so many mid size SUVs that we also looked at, it is just fit for purpose and achieves that value for money. My baby's rear facing car seat fits in perfectly behind my driving position (I am 6 feet tall). The boot is so spacious for all the baby stuff + everything else you need to chuck in and super handy with an electrical tailgate. The infotainment system and driver assist functions are just smart and feel like 21st century. I'd recommend Passat wagons to young families with up to 3 kids. It is the car that addresses all your concerns.

    The issue is height with little ones. It saves your back not having to bend, and I think people just get used to that over time. Our Citroen C4 Grand Picasso is pretty much as high as an SUV without being an SUV, with more room. I'm looking for something with more performance though! Might have to wait for the kids to get a little bigger too. The Scout or Alltrack might satisfy the boss in regards to the extra height, hopefully!

    I had a 2014 130TDI Passat wagon, and what a great car. Quiet, supremely comfortably seats, especially for long journeys, and the handling of these things would surprise a lot of people. A few years ago I did a bad thrash from Bright to Mt.beauty on an awesome tight and windy road, and the way the Passat handled it was truly remarkable. It never faltered once. I can only imagine the new Passat would/could possibly be better..?? A hard act to beat..!!

Sadly in Canada we don't get the German Passat but the American one which even after the redesign still is nowhere near the European version, lots of scratchy plastic, the only advantage is that the rear space is bigger than the European. I've got a 2019 206TSi R-Line wagon with 4Motion & DCC, great car jam packed full of features. To new buyers I highly recommend speccing one with DCC, you have the 3 stock VW modes or tailor dampers, steering wheel weight to how you want it. Great everyday run around and rapid competent car with the AWD even when it's bucketing down. Put Michelin PSS on, the original Bridgestone run flats are horrid.

    Is the new 206 tsi going to be 200 tsi like the superb, with that awful PPF? Also any comments on the lights? Are they matrix - and on the matrix ones, are they worth it? They look like they'll be very good to have. Can you also give your opinion of this vs the 508?

  • @chasingcars

    @chasingcars

    4 жыл бұрын

    VW haven’t confirmed yet, but there has been a weird pattern with the Skodas picking up the PPF while the Volkswagens go without it, so it’s actually quite difficult to guess. The lights were pretty bog standard fixed LED - nothing special but bright enough; they’re not Matrix. As for the Pug: the 508 feels sportier and more agile, and the interior has more verve, but the Passat is quieter, more settled, more practical and it feels a bit more solid. It almost goes without saying that the VW will depreciate slower! That said, they’re both lovely cars and I would be happy to own either.

    I have mixed feelings on the Infotainment screen size in all cars. Back in 1978 when digital readout for clocks and MPG on Caddy’s and a few other makes made you think here comes the Digital age along with 1980 and the Electronic Gauge readout for Fuel, MPH, Temp. It was expensive and the Future. Now we see how Time can make screen look so outdated and be a turn off on the used car market. But, an Upgradable system is nice until the processor is to small to handle the updates. I like 8 inch screens and I have mixed feelings about anything bigger and distracting.

  • @chasingcars

    @chasingcars

    I also have mixed feelings. I prefer a handsome set of analogue gauges to a badly executed digital screen ahead of the driver. If you’re going to put a screen there, it needs to actually work well and do something the gauges cannot - like display a full map, in the VWs and Audis. If it’s just going to be a digital screen displaying a representation of traditional gauges, what’s the point?

    As an American viewer one of the primary reasons I subscribe to "Chasing Cars" is to stoke my envy of vehicles available in Australia that we're denied in the US. In the case of the Passat it's a double insult. VW has come to understand that Americans want their VW's to be bigger and cheaper than consumers in international markets. And while SUV mania is a worldwide phenomenon it's nowhere as prevalent anywhere beyond North America. Thus in America we get a vehicle with the Passat moniker that is built in America and is larger, cheaper, and not nearly as premium as the model available in Europe and beyond. And because Americans have almost totally abandoned wagons (and minivans) for SUV's we don't see an "estate" version of a Passat, at all. With the death of the Golf wagon and the AllTrack no VW wagons are left. Nor for that matter is there a wagon version of the Mazda6. In what we term the "mainstream" marketplace only the Subaru Outback remains and Subaru styles and refers to it as an SUV. Sad, sad, sad for those of us who love wagons.

    That is a sorry state of affairs, Stephen. A great shame that the Golf wagon range won't be sold in America any more - but I hope for a wagon comeback some day.

    @@XB75015 Yes, I'm aware of Volvo wagons. I've even owned a couple of them over the years. As well as Audi's wagons available in the US. But they're no substitute for what we term "mainstream" brands in the US.

    What's with the massive black rectangle with four massive bolt holes on the front bumper where the number plate goes? I get that a Euro number plate would fit there, but it just looks cheap and out of place anywhere else. Does anyone else hate this about the look?

    Not sure why they put them on, but these cars look best with full size Euro style plates front and rear, which is what we run on our cars.

    Your Australian style passat is not a real passat. A lot of your complains are in the passat in the european version. So its a really stupid review if youre not living in Australia.

    @@chasingcars Youre complaining about not having an active info display or an electric trunk opener or not having an 8" infotainment. All of them are available right now, but you said that the active info display isnt. Everything costs extra money I think your complain about having it standard because of 45k% price tag is unreasonable. It is a common price policy if you compare it to any other mid-luxury car

  • @chasingcars

    If you listen to my comments closely, I didn’t complain about the lack of an Active Info Display. I merely noted it, and said that those who want it will need to wait for the 206TSI. My complaint about the 8” low-res display is entirely founded. The Tiguan Highline, which costs about the same, has the high-res 9.2” screen, so all I’m asking for is consistency there. The same goes for an electric tailgate which is almost always standard at this price.
