Not to mention the un-satisfying gameplay, downgrade of story, absolutely NO major antagonists besides one at the end of the game when you're almost finished, etc

The people who made the SR games years ago are long gone most likely, replaced by fresh graduates from art schools who might've maybe played the games back when they were little kids. But they also probably weren't too invested in the series, and without the fame or skill to create their own ip they have to resort to the body snatcher method of hijacking another series and turning it into their own with zero regard for the existing fanbase.

What a tragedy. I had a small glimmer of restored hope when they said the patch is their main focus. I don't want IdolNinja's hard work to go down the drain like that. He put every fiber of his being into that patch with his blood sweat and tears. At this point, it's safe to assume that the patch itself was probably put on hold indefinitely. RIP Saints Row, Volition, and especially Mike Watson.

If there's any comfort to be had, it's that in my experience, pissed off devs tend to leak unreleased stuff.

AAA publishers act like drunken shopkeepers burning millions of dollars to produce terrible reboots that nobody wants, but when a beloved franchise with a dedicated fan-base falls into their laps, they suddenly sober up and turn into accountants. 🤣

5:05 Man, seeing the loading screens for GotR hits hard - I drew and collaged those (heraldic one was a layer-heavy clipart mashup) and some of the weapon icons in prolonged back and forths with Idol back when the mod development was in full swing, and those were the most fun "staying up late" (due to timezone differences) sessions. Idol had that contagious drive y'know. Didn't care much for reboot, but the likely death of sr2 patch just... really sucks.. Damn.

Even without Violition, I sincerely doubt there's going to be another Saints Row for at least another six-seven years, even if they started development today, Grand Theft Auto 6 will be out long before they could finish the game, and there's no way a franchise with the current bad blood thr IP has with the audience right now could even hope to match a juggernaut like GTA.

The reboot was their perfect window to pull in those very fans who were yearning for a new open world too and they failed on capitalizing on that. So sad.

I'm tired of people coping and refusing to give the developers and writers blame but putting everything on the publisher.

Fuck dude, its so over. When Embracer Group announced the downsizing of their gaming division, I knew it was only a matter of time before some sort of announcement came out about Volition having layoffs in some fashion, but a full studio closure?! Man, I'm so devastated that it came to this. Rest in Peace Volition. At least I can still go back to SR1, 2, and The Punisher and have a good time remembering the good ol days before AoM and the reboot. Thanks for keeping the community updated on this whole thing and the SR2 patch. Its such a shame that we all had to watch something we love slowly crash and burn.

I love the original Saints Row games, The Punisher, and the original Red Faction games. Volition was the king of environmental interaction, physics and destruction mechanics, especially at its peak with Red Faction Guerilla.

Well let's think like reasonable adults. Why would they spend money and resources to update a 15 year old game if they will not turn a profit? The thing about companies is that they are often funded by investors and those investors expect a return on investment. You want a say in how a company operates? Invest a large enough sum of money into that company. Because I can assure you those investors have put much more money into that company than the $60 or so you pay for a game. And why does money matter? Well no one will work for free, so they need money to pay all their employees, they need money to pay for the lights, equipment and licenses to run their business. They need to pay for the building they operate in, for the marketing of their games, all of this is very expensive, so it wouldn't make any sense for them to waste money and resources that could go to other projects on a game that is almost 20 years old just to make a few people happy. It makes no sense. Just go play a new game

Volition's problem is simple; they got burnout by fame and reputation of this single IP, Saints Row. Once Steve Jarros left the studio and many others followed the same, Volition just can't do nothing except Saints Row. What I meant by this is that, Volition got other great IP like Freespace, or Red Faction, Descent or Summoner. They could make Freespace 3 or 4 and put Saints Row aside for awhile but they got burnout at the end.

Rest in peace volition, i have no words. I was hoping for the saints row 2 patch to have some news soon, something to keep us hoping for this franchise. I dont know what to think right now but i hope in some way this series can continue but with this i dont know. I would have never in a million years though think that flippy's nda was due him working on the saints row 2 patch. (Edit: i also want to say rest in peace to idle ninja. The saints row 2 patch meant so much to him and literally wouldn't be possible to even start without him. Hell, MODDING wouldent be possible without him in saints row 2. Gotr is the closest thing we have to a patch and makes it possible to run on my potato, **laptop** and has helped others be able to play the greatest game of all time on pc, 5:27 - END basically summarizes what i want to say here)

It’s actually so sad to see this all happening I’m so gutted there’s a big chance we could never get a saints row, when they first said a new saints row was coming i honestly couldn’t believe it I just wish it went how we all wanted it to go!

And with that, Volitions tale ends. Not with a huge blowout title or revisiting Stillwater, but with a 3 paragraph “I’m sorry” from HR.

I don't care that they're shut down, like nobody criticized the community manager's posts so that says alot about those who worked there. Not even 1 person came out and gave an apology for Steph's behavior.

To be fair, it could just be that standards for how well a game sold in 2008 vs. what's expected of a game from 2022/3 are vastly different. It wouldn't surprise me if the reboot _technically_ sold more than 2, but not enough for them to warrant keeping the studio around. But of course, I could just be wrong. That tends to happen.

STOP BLAMING THE PUBLISHER! previous employees at Volition had no problem meeting deadlines and budgets for SR 1-4 despite being published by the same company. the problem is with the DEVELOPERS at Volition; whoever joined between SR4 and SR2022 are incompetent, woke, and ultimately responsible for Volitions demise.

They haven't made a game I've really liked it in well over 10 years, but it's still a shame, especially when there were people like IdolNinja at Volition, and the video community team before the reboot were clearly passionate about the games they made (even if they did go quiet post-AoM). I'm interested in seeing what you know once you get it all structured.

ive been with flippy since agents of mayhem. this almost feels like the true end of an era because flippy has pretty much said everything there could be said about one of my favorite video game franchises of all time. we know saints row literally had the potential to take over GTA as the best open world crime sim series if they put in the work but all that potential was thrown away because volition went the blue pill route, sold out, and made a fool of the series because they didn’t have the confidence to go up against gta. SAN ANDREAS is a gamg simulator where you work your way up from a sellout that ran away in the middle of a gang war to being the leader of the toughest gang in the state. that is literally the formula of saints row but they didn’t build on it.

That was always the case, but they used to be competent products with actual talent in them. Nowadays they're not even seen as products by these bigger AAA companies, but as "services" They don't even need talent or a decent hiring process anymore, they can just put out trash by incompetent straight out of college nobodies with rich daddies and it will sell on brand loyalty alone.

@@trabuco9 I don’t think it was always the case, especially with the games that were made 2 decades ago that we still hold onto like CoD, Halo, CS, Fallout, etc. They were all made as passion projects that never got the respect they deserved from the higher ups until long after those games had bankrolled their companies. The people who used to make games were actually driven and motivated people with any amount of a vision for what they want to create, nowadays you’d be hard pressed to find a AAA dev who has their own opinion on anything, just another office drone that would’ve been content being a paper pusher at some legal firm.

@@trabuco9 but yeah, there is a lot to be said about the people who get hired at AAA studios now. I really do think that the money people now run games companies instead THE PEOPLE MAKING GAMES. This is evident if you watch any of Tim Cain’s KZread videos where he describes the process of making modern games, and even the greed that permeated the late 90’s and early 00’s and how it’s gotten worse over time.

I appreciate the insight into what went down with this patch. I really was looking forward to it so much and really wanted to see it completed... god damn so sad we lost Idol Ninja...

Saints Row at one point in time was truly something special. I’m getting older & I’ve seen a lot of big series rise & fall, but I was still sad to see this one. I know that reboot was horrible, but I’m mourning what once was more than what it became.

never thought i'd see the birth and death of my favorite franchise. as much as i want more sr, it should've been killed off the moment deep silver wanted to cater to newer gamers and audiences who have succumbed to this generation's soft approach to everything. sappy, goofy millenial friends who struggle together against capitalism and cringey netflix dialogue, from a game series where we assassinate a political figure, literally bury someone alive, and chop off a dude's head in a meat packing plant

wait, the people in the earlier games WERE millennials. the newer game is gen z. gen z loves fucked up stuff, though. millennials are in their 30s and 40s now. Saints Row 2 and 3 are really big satires of early 2000s stuff, which is prime millenial.

Same old, same old. Developer go down and accuse producers that they are the sole reason for their fall. It’s toooootally not like they are to blame for sun-par game design and production. Even in the constriction of the publisher there is room to design. Every game is made with publisher “shackles”.

@@captaincrunch1707 Where there’s a will there’s a way, no? The problem of the Saints row reboot aren’t really that the story needed to be about friendship or the censorship. You can dodge around those limits. The problem of saints row(reboot ) is that the game just wasn’t good.

It's been a slow & painful process, but Volition is finally finished. And what a way to go out.

Idol ninja probably could generate enough electricity to power a small town spining in his grave

It feels like the only option at this point is to put pressure on Deep Silver to either do the right thing or sell the IP. Seems unlikely to work since money is involved. IdolNinja deserves the community's best efforts, even if it is in vain.

Saying the game failed because it was too woke is absurdly stupid and lets Deep Silver off the hook too easily. Would the game have been better if everyone was the opposite of woke? No, it would still have been a boring buggy floaty mess that misses the mark on every level.
