The area around Mývatn offers a high geothermal activity with several mud holes that are related to the Krafla volcanic system with its last eruptions about 40 years ago.
The mud holes and ponds can emit toxic gases. This area rests on a volcanic plateau. We did these shots after sunset amplifying the "from another world" experience.The blue hour in combination with the emitted gases generate an amazing landscape with a unique color coding.
Eyjafjörður is the largest fjord of Iceland located at the northern tip. You go out on zodiacs to see the unique underwater geothermal vents. Iceland’s volcanic heritage can be also observed underwater. Chimneys of geothermal activity founded in Basalt-Lava are made of Smectite and are up to 45 m high. Eyjaförður is the only known place where you can dive them. They start about 15 m below surface. The chimneys are the playground for the Cods enjoying the hot water.
Strokkur is a geyser in a geothermal area feature several different geysers, geothermal ponds, and geothermal mud holes. Strokkur erupts about every 10 minutes with fountain heights between 6 and 30 m depending on the eruption strength.
The Reykianes volcanic system forms a peninsula at the south western tip of Iceland. It is one of the most active volcanic areas in Iceland with yearly eruptions.The volcano in the center erupted in 2022 - it is still hot as you can see in the next telephoto shot. Hot air is being emitted from the crater.The darker lava is the result from the most recent eruption in 2023.
