Nikon Z9 Wildlife - The Dragonfly Challenge

The Dragonfly (Odonata) is an insect living in the proximity of water with a maximum wingspan of about 19 cm or about 7 inch. They catch their prey - mostly other insects in flight and live as larva in water creeks and lakes. They are super fast and show often nearly erratic flight patterns. This brings into attention two important features of the Z9/Z8 pre capture (a feature that will be available in the Z6 III) and auto capture (let us see whether this feature makes it into the Z6 III).
What is in the video:
Intro: 00:00
Love is in the air: 00:25
Take Offs and Touch Downs: 01:09
In Flight: 02:19
Spider Attack : 02:42
On the Hunt : 03:15
Location - Ego to Eco System: 04:40
Love is in the air: Dragonflies have diverse mating rituals from airborne to forming hearts while mating.
Take Offs and Touch Downs: Dragonflies are super fast asking for highest shutters speeds and very high frame rates. The erratic flight pattern can hardly be tracked making pre-release and auto-capture an important tool to capture these fast insects in flight. Traditional prefocussing helps as well.
Spider Attack: After their metamorphosis they are very vulnerable to sudden spider attacks.... On the Hunt : However, as skilled hunters they catch their prey mostly in flight patrolling the area for a good catch ! The high demand of energy limits their actions to sunny days with many insects.
Location - Ego to Eco System: For this photo shoot I used my wild-life studio turned garden .... transformed into a new eco system for birds and critters.....

Thank you for this. What focus settings do you use for dragonflies and insects?

Different ones. For regular photography and pre release capture "birds" works really well for the large dragonflies often focussing on the eye. Auto capture is just giving you the option for animals and that did work not quite as good. I had quite a few missed releases. All of the above in AF-C. For macro - stacking I am on manual focus.

@@bardazima One tiny correction for the stacking you need to be on AF. But the initial focus position where I start the stack is done by manual override using focus peaking and ensuring that I start the 30 pic stack in front of the subject.
