    Nice genuine review. I have the Voigtlander 23MM f1.2 for Fuji which I love. I also have the XF80mm 2.8 macro which is beautiful but heavy and expensive. I ;am interested in the Voigtlander 35mm mainly for the manual focus experience. I have 13 XF lenses and 12 manual focus lenses and a Leica Q2, and I rarely use auto focus on any camera/lens.

    Thank you for the very good review and photo examples! I have XPro2 with 35mm f2 and even I love it a lot, I wish the minimal focus distance would be closer. It seems this Voigtlander might cover it all.

    Thank you for the (video) review! Was waiting since days for one which is in english or at least has english subs! 😭 Almost a year ago i bought my first camera and chosen the X-T4 with the XF 16-80mm but slowly realized that the lens is too slow, big and heavy for what i want to use my camera. Have then searched for something fast, lightweight, a good every day focal length and manual because I also realized that I enjoy shooting manual so much more than using the AF after buying a adapter to be able to use the 40 years old lenses my dad still has. Decided to buy the TTArtisan 35mm f/1.4 and now I used it every day for the last 10 months. Its not that sharp when im zooming in and has strong lens flare problems on f1.4 but I enjoy using it so so much. Its feels so good to hold the camera when its attached cuz its so lightweight, small and aesthetic. 🥰 I have also ordered the Voigtländer some days ago. I cant wait for it to arrive! 🤩 Its gonna replace my TTArtisan 35mm because I wanted something sharper and am also not really able to shoot small insects with it which then always forces me to use the XF 16-80 for it. I have also found a few japanese websites which reviewed the Voigtländer if some other people here want more image quality information about the lens: www.fujiya-camera.co.jp/blog/detail/info/20220721/ news.mapcamera.com/KASYAPA/apoultronmacro35/ (use google translator to translate them if u cant read japanese like me lol)

    Glad you enjoyed the video. You’ll lose a bit of low light performance with the Voigtlander due to the F2.0 aperture but otherwise it’s a fantastic lens! Would love to hear your thoughts after you use it for a while :)

    @@RenanMeloC Going from F1.4 to F2.0 will be a noticeable difference in low-light situations (although it also makes your depth of field even shallower, which has it's pros and cons). Voigtlander also sells a 35mm F1.2 and 23mm F1.2 manual focus x-mount lens. From what I've seen, very high praise in terms of build quality and image sharpness!

  • @iainmacadam2119

    Wow, I appreciate this nicely produced video so much, there's hardly any user experience info on this lens out there! Your sample photos look great and do a good job giving a feel for how the lens behaves. Much better than Voigtlander's own meager samples. Since these are unedited, can you tell us what your jpeg settings were? Couple things I want to mention: Apo isn't eyy-pee-oh, it's an abbreviation of apochromatic so it's appropriate to pronounce it as such: Apo. People get this wrong probably more often than they get it right because they're most used to seeing it in Leica's all-capitals lettering, so they think it's an initialism. And regarding not expecting image quality to beat the Noktons... indeed I would expect it to: it should be one of Voigtlander's top tier performers. Apochromatic (clean tones and low aberration) macro (probably well corrected across a range of distances and highly resolving) with a smaller relative aperture (less compromise, easier to achieve high performance, tho still a pretty fast macro) are all characteristics that point to this being a very performance oriented lens. The Noktons, in contrast, are great lenses but prioritize speed and rendering character, hence the nocturnal name to indicate their light-hungriness. One is not better than the other, but I'd expect an Apo-Ultron to score higher in technical performance. Declaring a lens to be an apochromat invites very close scrutiny of its performance, so making one is always a statement about the confidence a manufacturer has in its performance. If we wanted something less specialized, the non-macro, non-apo, autofocusing, weather-sealed, smaller, and still excellent Fuji alternative is a capable all-rounder that can be found for not much more than half as much, is less demanding in use, and most buyers would be happier with it. This V/C apo is a niche product for those willing to pay a lot more for a fully manual lens with the kind of performance improvements that mean a lot to some but are invisible to many. No one pays extra for something billed as an apochromat and expects a lens that merely does things "fairly well." This is a versatile lens because it's a normal focal length, fast, with very high performance and macro capability, not because it's a basic all-arounder that doesn't excel at anything. Again, thank you for this video, it's really helpful and also just nicely put together and pleasant to watch.

    This is one of the most informative comments I've received! Thanks a lot for educating me on the APO moniker and it's origins. Definitely learnt something there! You are clearly well-versed in photography knowledge and it was fascinating to read your views on Voigtlander's decision to design this lens with APO and macro capabilities. I'm glad you found the video pleasant to watch despite my misconceptions and "average consumer" approach to the review. Thanks!

  • @iainmacadam2119

    @iainmacadam2119

    Жыл бұрын

    @@ZenTechLife On the contrary, I think your more "average consumer" approach, but showing solid quality results, is great here because it's relatable and true to life, and also kind of refreshing. A lot of reviews tend to be different serious photographers (or serious photo gearheads) reading the same specs, doing the same tests, showing the same results, and reciting the same conclusions, and there's not always a lot to learn from that (though I'd welcome more of it for this lens, since it seems to be getting ignored). I usually find it more helpful to see the results from someone who bought the lens to use rather than to test, and who uses it well and achieves good results-it comes off more authentic and what I learn is usually more relevant. Glad you found my commentary worthwhile. I'm not an expert or optical engineer or anyone else truly qualified to talk about lens design, but I've used a lot of lenses over the years, developed strong preferences in them, and spent some time trying to figure out what types of lenses tend to render in ways I like. Incidentally, I was just looking at the Voigtlander site and I noted how they constantly capitalize APO there (APO-Lanthar, APO-Skopar, APO-Ultron) even though it makes no real sense to. So it's certainly understandable that most people pronounce the letters instead of reading it as the abbreviation that it is. To perhaps walk back what I previously said a little, I didn't really mean to imply that every lens that says apo is automatically excellent; there are "apo" lenses that may (or may not?) meet the technical criteria but don't really perform up to expectations. I understand Sigma has been guilty of this at times. What I really meant is that the apo designation always conveys the intent of exceptional performance to the buyer, honestly or dishonestly, and when it's used loosely people definitely notice and make it known: "apo" tells everyone to go looking for chromatic aberration, and if they find it they're going to be disappointed. While other makers (Zeiss, Nikon, others) don't use an apo designation even if a lens technically qualifies. So it's not that every apo is the best, or that a lens isn't among the best if it doesn't say apo, but when a more respected maker like Leica or Voigtlander does designate a lens as apochromatic, it's a reliable indicator that the design is a high achiever that they expect will meet the high expectations of demanding users (and testers). And similar for macros; I don't want to imply all macros are good either, but it's an extra challenge to make a lens that can focus to macro magnifications, maintain strong performance in that range, and also still focus to infinity and be used for general purposes, so when a reputable manufacturer makes a macro I assume they've taken it seriously and made it for a demanding purpose and a niche user. If a macro has disappointing performance then, if nothing else, it's not going to compare well against many decades worth of great macro lenses that have been legendary for top performance. And manufacturers know that macros are going to probably be judged harder and more specifically. I still want to see more results shot by more photographers of more subjects in more situations so I can get a clearer idea of how this lens behaves, but so far your samples are the most helpful and promising I've seen.

    The Nokton is smaller and more dreamy wide open with strong flares, glow around bright objects and low contrast. The bokeh is quite unique too - smooth but with character. At f/1.4 there are already great sunstars. It's getting quite sharp at f/2. Portraits at f/1.2 feels nostalgic, and night shots are very dreamy/mystical. You can check out samples in the Flickr lens group.
