Joni was "found" after being struck by a brain aneurism. This is remarkable. Joni was left in such bad shape, she had to learn to walk and speak again. She literally had to build up the skill to do basic things again. The fact that at 78 she's still here at all is remarkable, but to be singing live, in public with a live band is utterly insanely. She hasn't performed publicly in nearly a decade. This took huge courage. I'm so proud.

@@SamJohnsonVoice I believe she was found on her floor, after three days. Brandi loves her, and in her autobiography, says they have regular jams at Joni’s place. They had a birthday party for her a while back. Everyone urged her to perform again, and with a lot of support, encouragement, and hard work, here she is.❤️

It’s remarkable that she survived, much less to perform again. My mother suffered a ruptured brain aneurysm in 2017, and she was extremely fortunate to get immediate care. Her mother (my grandmother) suffered one in the 80’s and wasn’t as fortunate. I’m shocked Joni survived 3 days after the rupture with no treatment. She’s very blessed.
This is the rehearsal. Her performance was stronger at the actual show. I cried thru both performances. I cried watching this! She taught herself to play guitar again after the aneurysm by watching herself on KZread videos. This is her first public appearance after the brain injury. Thanks to Brandi Carlisle’s encouragement. What a gift to hear her again.

I don’t think this was the rehearsal, I’m not sure what you’re talking about
I was there 4 people back in the crowd after my shift at the field hospital. EVERYONE was crying. Some from the moment she walked on staged. To think of what it took for Joni to be in a place where she can even think of performing is mind blowing. I’m blessed to have been there to witness it. She hasn’t been at the Newport Folk Festival since 1969. Rumors were swirling all day

I cannot tell you how much I envy every single human there. What a moment to be there to experience.
Not only did she have a brain aneurism that essentially caused a near fatal stroke in 2015, only 7 years ago, but she was, and perhaps still is, battling a rare disease called Morgellons Disease. It's a rare skin condition wherein the person afflicted has crawling sensations on and under the skin, compared to insects moving or biting. The fact that she is even up on stage is magical. And the fact that Brandi Carlile was involved, man I enjoyed this.
This song, especially the later years version, always makes me cry. I enjoyed watching it with you both so we could all cry together. A very special performance indeed.
So Wynonna Judd sang this song at her 1st talent show. So there are a lot of memories tied up in this song. With her recently passed Mom (the beautiful Naomi), I'm sure there were so many wonderful emotions on this song for her. Joni is a great artist and so glad Brandi is making sure they all get their flowers now (Looking at you Tanya Tucker). I'd love to see a Tanya Tucker reaction video on her voice now.
Joni's phrasing and ability to emote is impeccable, even at 78, and after coming back from an aneurysm. I'm not crying, you're crying 😭😭😭💓💓💓
It's deeply moving not just because of her personal triumph over the near fatal aneurysm, but also her opportunity to receive the love and appreciation directly from the public after a very long absence. An incredible musical genius legend that's been underappreciated for quite awhile.
Not just the singing now, after overcoming so much. She sounded angelic on the original AND, she wrote the song.
Joni is truly a legend- how beautiful it is to see people be moved no matter what their generation. Timeless!
brandi carlile’s the joke is my dad’s favourite song and became one of mine. this is so amazing to watch!

We both love that song!
What makes it so much more emotional for me are the lyrics. They mean something so much more at her age now compared to when she was in her 20's or 30's. It feels more heartbreaking now because of all the life experience she's had. At her current age she's lost love probably several times over (in some way or another) and its bittersweet. We know so much more about life and about ourselves as we age and that is what I feel in this version. It's more soulful and true with the passage of time behind you.
She may not have the voice she used to but...man. What a legend. I've been a longtime fan of Joni. Whenever I see an album of hers in a record store, I grab it. If I was there, I'd be crying along with Ms. Judd.
This performance makes me feel the same way as I felt when watching the Glen Campbell documentary I’ll Be Me. Seeing a legend in the twilight of their career navigating the songs that are still so deep in their beings, that still come out with beauty and power even as the body’s physical (and in Glen’s case mental) limitations are so apparent. It feels like an honor and a gift to see it.
immediately paused my ER rewatch to come listen to you guys talk about this 🏃♀️ I enjoy hearing about how big the mental component is - I feel like I don’t hear that mentioned much in “voice teacher reacts” videos from other folks. Anyway old Joni singing this always has me cryin’ in the club. Me too guys me too

Yes! Brandi has such an interesting voice. I've followed her since she first started recording music!
Wynnona Judd really broke me in this video. She had such a deep connection while living through this performance. Joni's performance of Summertime was amazing too.
What you said about letting the libretto, lines, role grow and evolve with your personal experience is the benchmark of a true artist. Pina Bausch danced at 70, Maja Plizetskaya did the dying swan over age 80, In classical music some of the most profound recordings are done by the artist in their twilight years, sometimes in a different tempo and phrasing (or key) than expected by a young virtuoso. Numerous jazz and blues artists infusing their late performaces with gravitas and life experience, country and folk musicians too, actors playing their last part and knowing it. Permorming arts require being in the moment, open to the moment and has very little to do with repeating or reliving old performances or trying to deliver what you suppose the public expects or wants, that's just a trap that will never work. At a certain age exhilarating technique gives way to other more profound qualities only aquired after a lifetime of immersion in your art. It's priceless and cannot be compared to heights of a career. Only added to your achievements and shades of color. Joni had to relearn everything and took the help of dear friends and young musicians she loves, and her own footage of guitar arrangements, practicing with her younger self as mentor. But all the while she's not lost her musicality, ear for poetry, all thatbresonates within; that part didn't need relearning. Nor did the personal integrity she always posessed, not the stubborn hard will to do what she wants to and get there! It's all her words and notes and compositions, and she conquered the unbelievable challenge of reposessing her work on stage. I'm sure however, also this was a learning experience as well involving perhaps a new kind of inner humility. She once proudly proclaimed she was done performing. That changed with the dreadful challenge she encountered in her recent years, and in fact her music brought her the connections and support she needed to arrive at this moment in time performing. It's all a beautiful tale, round and round, up and down indeed. But music like theatre at its core is making art as an ensemble. The young Joni perhaps reminded her of to what degree this really is true, through her older selfs initiative with the jamsessions at home. Lets not forget great artists enjoy hearing other talents interpret their work. It brings inspiration to hear what one knows by heart with others fresh perspective and artistic choices. This was an amazingly gripping concert to experience from across the globe on a screen. I'd be gutted seeing and hearing this live at Newport. I was born to her music and never stopped listening. (Cohen too and other legends). Nobody says it but man have the Canadians contributed immensely to the Great (North) American songbook! ❤️❤️❤️

And Wynona sobbing after her mom has just died - so many feels
I'm so happy to just see Joni making music again with other musicians. Her rendition of Summertime..it was probably the song that she was most comfortable in. I read that she had been practicing that during her rehab.
Thank you for doing this incredibly meaningful and respectful reaction to an unforgettable, sacred moment.
You all know that Joni had a brain aneurysm in 2015 and had to relearn how to walk, talk…play the guitar by watching KZread videos of herself. The shakiness you’re hearing is very common in singers after suffering a massive blood clot in the brain. This is a miracle performance🙏 I’m addition she was a chain smoker most of her life and it caused her voice to change significantly. She survived paralysis from Polio as a 9 year old child that affects the vocal chords with age…just a force of nature.

And it was clear at certain points she lost track of where she was in the song (which is when Brandi got things back on track), but I’m guessing that happens to all performers regardless of age or health status. The fact that she’s on that stage at all is remarkable. And the song choice is perfect for the situation.
Really never listened to her until last night, but thought she did a magnificent job on Summertime at the festival.
I loved all of this, and especially Joni's laughter at the end. What a joyful, rich performance. Loved you both sharing your insights together! Thanks Sam and Vanessa!
Kim Sheehy auditioned for The Voice Australia with this song a few years back. It gives me chills every time I hear her sing it 😭😭👏🏼👏🏼

Yes! This performance perfectly displays what its all about. Thank you sooo much for doing this video.
She is a real badass! At her age, after all of the things she’s been through… LEGEND! 😍😍😍
Joni Mitchell is a legend...perhaps do a video of her singing when she was younger as well. This was powerful knowing the original version and hearing her life experience come through during this performance...oh the tears.🥹
Amazing. How can you not love this song, in any of its renditions?
The woman sitting behind her is one of the greatest vocalists in country music. Wynonna Judd just lost her singing partner and mom a few months ago. Watching her feel is incredible. Ive loved Joni and wynonna my whole life.

Brandi is my all time favorite artist and has introduced me to Joni 🥰 you should do a video of one of Brandi’s songs!
There are differences, because once her voice was much brighter, but now her voice moves me more, because I hear years behind her and things that happened in her life. I just hear the voice of a mature woman after the ordeal. I remember Johnny Cash's last performance with the song 'Hurt' and now I have the same feelings.
Love love love this song

The reason she can sing this song at her age is because it is an "looking back on life song" she wrote when she was only 23! Singing a regular teenager/youth song at 79 years old will always be weird. But that song just gets more meaning naturally while you age.
WOW! 😭😭😭😭😭
Considering Joni Mitchell suffered a severe brain aneurysm and had to learn how to speak again it is incredible to hear her voice she is truly a legend.
THis is the first time she's sung since her aneurism seven (or so) years ago. Her shakieness is due to the detrimental physical affect the aneurism had on her voice and body, I think.
you got to react to Brandi now 👀

A consequence of aging is that the "ear" goes flat. That could mean that the "audiation" could go flat and that means the note a performer meant to hit in their head might not meet the execution. I would love to see the "grid". I bet how off pitch she might be, would be consistent against the "correct" pitch.
That woman has more courage than Rocky Balboa and Arnold Schwartzeneger put together...
I prefer her lower range vs her original high (screechy) version. I cried watching the folk concert of her. Absolute trooper & national icon. Glad she was able to do this. Join is an incredible song writer. Her words are timeless & ageless.

She kinda sounds like Nina Simone on the last note
A little disappointing that you didnt know or mention her medical history.
Y'all... She once was great. She is now not good now, obviously. She is ancient. That doesn't mean she sucks. It doesn't mean she isn't a wonderful person. It does mean she is literally a "has been." She has an elderly warble. She sounds now like her young self, played in slow motion. You all are being overly kind, in the objective sense. She used to be amazing. Many of us were. Most of us aren't now. That's just life. We can honour her, without pretending that as an elderly woman she is still as still as good as she was. She isn't.
Wynonna makes me sad....God bless her heart!!
Hey Sam, learn when to stop talking when Vanessa wants to talk. Especially when your points are boring (or repetitive) and hers are interesting.
Horrible annoying banter and attempts to analyze until the end when you kind of acknowledged the greatness you were watching. This will embarrass you if you make it anywhere near Joni’s age. Maybe delete the evidence now.
