Vocal Coach Reacts to Joni Mitchell singing "Both Sides Now" (1970 and 2000) - Analysis

Музыка

Hi, my name is Aleksandra and I'm a vocal coach based in London. Today I'll be reacting to and analysing the one and only Joni Mitchell singing "Both Sides Now" and comparing the 1970s and 2000 version of this song.
I hope everyone is keeping safe and healthy during this strange time!
Can't be bothered to watch the whole 20min? I hear you. Skip to parts that interest you the most:
0:00 - 1:22 - introduction
1:23-2:40 - watching the 1970 performance
2:41 - 4:00 - analysing the arrangement, voice type and... dress choices!
4:01 - 5:01 - watching the 1970 performance
5:02 - 5:47 - the register changes
5:48 - 7:13 - what is this song about?
7:14 - 8:30 - finishing watching the 1970 performance
8:48 - 10:14 watching the 2000 version
10:15 - 11:38 - discussing the initial differences to the 1970 version
11:39 - 12:47 - watching the 2000 version
12:48 - 14:12 - talking about Joni's phrasing
14:13 - 16:05 - watching the 2000 version
16:06 - 17:10 - more about phrasing and delivering a story
17:11 - 19:17 - finishing watching the 2000 version
19:18 - 20:24 - talking about covers of this song and a goodbye

The older versions is a great example of courage artistry. So many singers are held to ransom by their prime vocals and are trapped in the past. Yet in the second clip, Joni was unapologetically candid about her older voice and highlighted its strengths.

The younger version is more innocent, and hopeful. "Dreamer" as you put it. It goes very well with the type of music, which is 60s folk or something like that. The older one is a woman who has been ravaged by time and experience, and is coming out "the other side" a woman who can look back with gratitude at it all. It has a more dramatic, dark arrangement to go with it. Very appropriate.

It must have occured to her at some point that the cute pure blonde child who wrote that song could never have looked at life from both sides. When she had the chance to look from both sides, it all sounds so very different. Sadder, more resigned, better informed, less dreamy, and finally ready to admit truly that she really didn't know love at all.

Aleksandra, I remain equally transfixed by this truly sublime performance of Joni's beloved classic. You picked up on some of the many nuances that make this performance--and its arrangement--so beautiful. It takes a special ear, attention to detail, and love of music to appreciate what Joni and the orchestra have created--juxtaposing her decades-ago version with this modernized one was an excellent choice for a video. There is something so life-affirming to behold people like you who are as moved by this as I am... Thank you!

Joni and I grew up together, and went through most of the same cultural evolutionary processes together between 1970 and 2000 (at least!)... I saw her in concert thrice over the course of her career, and I actually met her at an art gallery opening featuring her work! Joni is THE preeminent singer/songwriter in the folk, pop, rock, and jazz genres, and even painted the covers for virtually all of her albums! IMO, there's just no one better, and that includes that guy Bob. Thank you for examining Joni through one of her most iconic songs, sung in 2 performances 3 decades apart!

From that same album, "Both Sides Now," there is a tremendous song you need to re-appreciate: "A Case Of You." The orchestration raises the hair on my arms, so closely does it suggest the mood and feeling of Richard Srauss's "Four Last Songs," particularly in the final bars. Props for the arranger, Vince Mendoza. You are correct about her voice maturing and gaining experience as well as her delivery which is much more thoughtful than in her hippie years, Her best album. Reminds me of Billie Holiday. You got the jazz influence right too.

Joni was an unapologetic chain smoker and her voice really did change, especially after the 80s. Joan Baez's voice still sounds great, and she's in her seventies. When Joni flips from chest to head voice, it's done with a bit of a yodel, which is one of her stylistic trademarks in her earlier work.

The cigarettes wouldn’t help but that also happens with age sometimes, due to muscular and hormonal changes within the body. It really depends on the individual, with good voice care and a lucky biological setup some people are able to maintain their voices throughout the years. Sometimes though, even if the were taking care of their voices, the biological changes win. Having said that, Cigarettes are definitely not recommended for voice longevity. That and my professional vocal health concern aside, I do enjoy how her voice sounds like now as well.

I don't disagree; she also has talked about changes in her throat muscles, but the raspiness due to cigarettes was apparent at a certain point. Nevertheless, her voice remains rich with the character of a lived life and she is one of my favorite artists of all time. Love her!

This is one of the most moving, evocative vocal performances ever. Joni has explored several genres in her career. I highly recommend that you listen (and react) to Amelia and Hejira, both from her album Hejira. I lived and worked all over the country for 7 years, and it was as if she had been traveling along with me. Also the song Refuge of the Roads from that same album. She has lived on the road, and she knows what it is like. I think Hejira is her high point--haunting, sere and lovely, all at the same time. She throws off metaphors in these songs without even breaking a sweat.

It’s funny, I’ve never read the younger version as positive, but more that inevitable moment of realization in youth where you transition from being a big shot know-it all to realizing how vastly lacking your knowledge actually is. It’s a moment mixed with shame, confusion, but also an exciting door opening for you to learn more and do things better. The older version captures the same revelations as experienced much later in life. They then align more to emotions of nostalgia, regret, maybe some bitterness that there isn’t as much time or opportunity to learn more or get do-overs. This is especially poignant when thinking how Mitchell’s life devolved because of Morgellons, a torturous psychiatric condition in which one believes sores on your body (often self-inflicted) contain fibrous material like threads or feathers. It is a delusional condition (or so medicine currently believes) and thus deeply alienating. To think someone so brilliant at capturing in lyric the human condition would suddenly be ostracized for a condition nobody can relate to or even believe...is just too painful. She will remain at the top of my list and I think Blue is a rare, perfect album.

Yup. I agree with you with most everything. I don't believe that this song can be sung by someone young as they wouldn't have the life experience to tell the story as it should and as Mitchell does in the 2000 performance. I did not hear this version until I saw the film, "Love, Actually" and Emma Thompson has a mini breakdown to the 2000 version of the song. It is story telling in the mature version and it is no longer a "things I need to see" song but a "things I have experienced" song. Many songs change for us as we get older. My example if "Over the Rainbow"`! When I was a kid watching it every year around Easter, it was a song about the future, hopes, dreams, etc. As you age, though, the lyrics take on a new meaning finally arriving at the point that the lyrics are more about what dreams and hopes were never fulfilled. Songs evolve with age and we evolve with them with age. This song is a classic and has been covered by everyone. Her voice, though, in 2000, after a lifetime of smoking and such, made it perfect in that moment. Sadly, she no longer sings, having had a stroke a few years back but this 5 minute video left us with a huge inspirational version, if still reflecting back.

You made me finally appreciate that "new" interpretation of "Both Sides Now". For a long time I really didn't like it. Here's why: I love the original and her angelic soprano. And I always found it tragic how her heavy smoking affected her voice that dropped lower and lower from album to album. So, when I listened to the 2000s version of "Both Sides Now" (the song and the album) I only ever heard a totally destroyed soprano, muffled, hoarse and raspy. But you now forced me to listen more closely and take it at face-value. Also, I happen to have had voice lessons in recent years so now I was able to hear how her voice is - albeit no soprano anymore - far from destroyed. She is still an immensely capable singer with a wide range and a lot of tools to express herself. Shortly after watching your video I pulled the CD from the shelf and listened to the whole album, and voilá: It is a great album after all :) Thank you!

Although different, there are several artists I would put on her level, Joan Baez being one.

LAURA NYRO. Very different but equally gifted, briliant and talented. They were contemporaries w the same record company. One of the few artists that Joni respected.

You are very insightful. It does seem that though Joni wrote the song as a younger woman (moons and Junes and Ferris wheels) her more mature self, with a more experienced soul, was better able to interpret it. Thank you.

Love your video :) I love Joni Mitchell. Bob Dylan and she changed music. For me Dylan is the better writer, but that is subjective of course. If I'm honest I have to admit to loving the early works of both artists the most :( Although these COVID-19 days Bob Dylan has turned out some great new songs and a new album is coming.

Comparing these two performances - 30 years apart - is kind of pointless. Firstly, this is not a song to be sung by an ingenue. The song sounds...unreal from someone who isn't at least 40. Time matured and ripened JM's voice to make those clouds into a wall of cumulus. The poetry of it she wrote from a childhood that brought pain and a certain amount of maturity with it. By 2000, JM's voice caught up with her soul. There's no comparison.

Lovely commentary, but please try not to overdo it in the midst of a passage. You've a brilliant ear, but let the bit play out before your comment, then rewind to further emphasize your point. Again, you are spot-on, only rushed. Now, based on your obvious ability, I shall be happy to subscribe.
