Voice Teacher Reacts and Analyzes: SO HYANG - ARIRANG ALONE [Immortal Songs 2]

Музыка

I breakdown and react to So Hyang's stunning performance of Arirang Alone. Watch to the end to see how miserably I fail to keep my composure.
It is my hope this analysis will help you better understand your own voice.

Please don't let comments discourage you from stopping as frequently as you would like to provide analysis. You are one of the few vocal coaches out there providing actual in-depth analysis of how vocalists are producing the sounds that they are and it is one of the biggest appeals of your videos, to my mind.

I can only agree - We are watching a Voice Teachter; not a reaction channel. If we wanted to watch someone that doesn't stop the video we would watch a reaction channel instead. We are here because we want educated explanations on what is going on => in-depth analysis. The reactions are only a bonus.

Hello John! I am fan from Korea, so please be patience with my English 😂 The song Arirang is Korean folk song that go back hundreds of years. It was when Japan took over Korea and killed many people, burn Korean language books, force them to speak Japanese and many more bad things. During this, Korea was split in to North and South. This song was a song both sides sang to unite them. It is a bout hopeing one day they will be together as one and not be separate. So Hyang sings about Dokdo, which is Korean Island that Japan also took. North and South Koreans hope to meet together on the Island and be together. Many family was separated and never can see them again. In North Korea they do still sing this song of hope, but no change has been make to try to bring Koreas back together. Thank you for reaction 💜

Now, me being the smarter one on this, I hope this never happens. You get two top high note singers, and it will end up being a competition as to who can go better, so no.... this would not be a good duet. Her kind of duet mate would be like in Childish Adult, where the man has the deeper and different toned voice, to mix with SoHyang. Not two of the exact same type of voices. That would not be a good mix. Just like with instruments. Two trumpets in a duet OK, but a Trumpet and a Flugelhorn.... waaaay better duet match.

Arirang means a high and low mountain hills that Korean people must go over together, which are crisis of nation or every person. It is a Symbol of One Korea, all korean are one. Have good time~! She has that effect on everybody really, in almost every song. Communication perfection. She understands the song she is singing and how to design it. She is also probably the hardest worker on her singing and production you will every meet...and I mean she will put a 100 times more thinking and effort in preparing a song than anybody else. I mean even those notes you don't notice, she puts a little something into.

Arirang Song is a 600-year-old Korean traditional song. There are various versions of Arirang songs throughout Korea. In places where Koreans are scattered not only in Korea but also around the world, Arirang's songs spread like their souls, and ethnicities and tribes who had deep exchanges with Koreans can remember Arirang and sing the melody. Let's write down the representative Korean Arirang and its meaning. I feel sorry for my poor English because I turned to a translator, but I think it will be a good reference, so I take courage as a Korean and write it down. Type 1. Arirang, Arirang, Arari It goes over Arirang Pass. If you leave me behind, An outbreak occurs in less than ten miles. Arirang means "I love you so much that my heart aches," and this song can be seen as a one-sided love that only makes me nervous. "Ari" is heartbreaking and painful. 'Rang' refers to a lover. The hidden meaning of 'rang' is Korea. My beloved is leaving over that pass until my heart aches. The man who leaves me will develop an illness in less than ten miles This is not a curse for leaving him, but a very desperate love song for him to come back to him with a disease.

Wonderful reaction and analysis John. Don't worry about showing your emotions. I have easily heard this performance 100 times and it still brings tears to my eyes. "Arirang" is a very old Korean folk song with great significance to all of the Korean people. This nostalgic song was passed down from past generations, from a time when Korea was united, and is a simple life story of the Korean people. It speaks of love, sadness, farewells from loved ones, and overcoming hardships from Korean wars and other conflicts. It also speaks of the small happinesses found in everyday life, being as one in their hearts together, and hoping for a better future. This song could be viewed as an anthem of a united Korea. You can tell how important this song is to So Hyang. She put her heart and soul into her performance. She is absolutely an angel!

Her vocals are soul-stirring beauty. In 'Arirang Alone' I hear So Hyang's moving identification with her listeners in what it means and feels to be Korean. This song and her manner of singing this song provides profound reconciliation of the past and present individual and collective Korean experience of 'Han.' Some use the Korean word 'Han' to refer to life under Japanese rule from 1910 to 1945. Many in younger generations use 'Han' to describe only depression, deep sorrow, resentment, or even hatred. The word means far more in Korean history, language, and literature. Long before the Japan-Korea treaty of 1876 began to diminish Korean culture, the word had meaning on the peninsula. 'Han' (and this song) is soulful acknowledgement of the past and any present difficulty but tied to assured hope; the overcoming of profound difficulty and a better future..even victory. Maybe a 'Han' philosophy propels many Koreans to work so hard to improve living. A western reflection of 'Han' might be heartfelt acknowledgement of the human condition (ie. experiencing the bleak abyss we lived in or now face but having assurance of reconciling the difficulty with a leap of faith to a better future).

Hey John, I've only recently discovered your channel, and I want to thank you for your thoughtful, insightful, intellectual analysis. In a society so obsessed with only the emotional aspect of being human, it's refreshing to see someone using their God-given brain to analyze music on an intellectual, as well as emotional, level. Also, since I have taught both Physics and Anatomy, I personally enjoy your scientific explanations of both the physics of sound, and the anatomical portion as well. Finally, it's irrelevant if some are bothered by your pauses. First off, it's your channel and your content, so it's entirely your perogative what you do. Second, you are here to analyze music and explain the science behind it, so that implies periodic pauses to fulfill the purpose of your channel. And third, if some don't like your approach, they are free to go elsewhere. No one is forcing them to watch your channel. You owe no apologies or explanations for why and when you pause, so please continue to operate your channel according to its purpose. Those of us intelligent enough to see the deeper purpose thoroughly enjoy your approach. Be blessed brother!

    1. This is one of the best reaction slash analysis videos I've ever seen, ever, and I've seen many of them, especially on Sohyang. Your depth of knowledge, the genuine reaction, the emotion, I found them really enjoyable to watch. Kudos! You will do well and rise up quickly in the vocal teachers/reactors scene of KZread. 2. Thank you for not letting how zealous copyright enforcer took down your first Sohyang video discourages you from making another one. 3. Please, DO interrupt as much as you want, especially when you want to impart your knowledge. First, it will benefit you in strengthening your case vs the copyright cops. Secondly, I'm with the crowd that actually WANT to hear what you have to say. We are the crowd that KNOW how to look for the full performance if we want to hear an uninterrupted version. 4. Yup, I too have had my shares of shaking head, throwing my hands up, "I'm done", tears and smiles from Sohyang's performances. She does that to people. She's a communicator par excellence. 😁 (I've watched your "Fate" video before it got axed. Had you dragged MBC to court, your case would almost guaranteed an easy win under Fair Use, since you were actually making COMMENTARY and TEACHING, not just merely doing what other KZreadrs do, making awkward mandatory pauses and trying to offer some personal, even random at times, observations which are not related to what the singers are doing). Great video! Thank you!

Hi John, it is rare that I comment but this one I have to!! I got to know you via So Hyang reaction videos. As an amateur singer and a lover of music, I love the way you observe and verbalize the technicalities of singing! By far one of the best on KZread if not the best! But the way you truly differ from others is your ability to pick up the context and to sense deeper emotion that is very difficult to understand, let alone appreciate from traditional songs like this. Tougher without understanding the language. Yet your interpretation (by your emotion, I am carefully assuming what you must have felt) is more than spot on IMHO! I truly appreciate that and just wanted to thank you for that and for your expertise! We surely are proud of So Hyang!

Another masterful reaction! Sorry to hear that your fabulous Fate reaction was taken down for copyright. MBC who owns the I Am A Singer 2 program is known to be really stingy on copyright. Immortal Song 2 is a KBS program, although it also keeps an watchful eye, it seems KBS gives a little more latitude based on the number of reactions videos I saw. Thank you for your wonderful feedback and pointed observations. I am always very fond of Sohyang's head mix - and your remark about it being "delicate but not weak" hits a spot for me. I always felt that Arirang Alone by Sohyang is her best example for seamless transition with its arrangement and execution. Also appreciate your comments on her vowel management to maintain the vocal intensity of the song. Your note on adjusting her delivery for rhythmic management is an insight I heard for the first time and makes a lot of sense to me. And I am touched when you smiled on her belt of the epic BB5 note. The ending compliment that you got wrapped up in her music and compelled to put a pause in watching Sohyang's performance with critical eyes is really the most sincere praise one could ask for. Often technical critique can be dry and obtuse to watch but I find myself chasing your comments one after another. Thanks for the video. Hope to see you again.

I like your emphasis on communication. The story that she's telling is profound and touches the audience deeply. Arirang is a Korean traditional folk song. Perhaps it's THE traditional folk song that resonates with the feelings of all Koreans. The song she sings using vocal techniques from various western influences, resolves into the original Arirang melody 10:31. The lyrics also emphasise unity and solidarity in facing the future. She uses her voice to demonstrate a way forward, a way to advance in the modern global world, while properly respecting (and revivifying) the history and tradition that bore her. The old man in traditional garb 10:39, understands and nods in emotional approval. It is a spectacular celebration of history, union of cultures, and the possibilities of the future. Sohyang has distilled this into her person through her own experience and sacrifice, which is why she can tell this story so well. She's embodied the story she wants to communicate.

It's a folk song that goes back around 600 years. There are 60 variations of the base song, with over 3600 versions identified. It started as a sad love song, and came to represent the sadness over the separation of North and South after ww2 and the Korean war.

If I remember correctly, Arirang is a Korean folk song which has been sung since at least the early 1900s during hard times like the Japanese occupation/invasion. It brings many emotions out when it is sung, but from comparing So Hyang's version to others (which are nice as well), I can definitely tell that she performs it in a way that especially stirs up emotions. I'm very interested in war time/tough time music and how it was used during those times. I'd say the most emotional piece for me is Evakon laulu (song of the immigrant). It tells a story from the point of view of a young Karelian boy evacuating, coming back and evacuating again from Karelia during the Winter war and Continuation war in Finland. Finland lost Karelia in the Continuation war and people had to permanently leave their homes then. Whenever this song is played, people struggle to hold back their tears. Such simple piece but the lyrics hit you deep. I think that Arirang probably has the same kind of meaning and impact on Koreans as Evakon laulu does on Finns.

Absolutely amazing song obviously, and at the same time it's amazing reaction&analysis for the song. I truly love the moment when you noticed/realised some vocal technique she did such as 05:20, 10:25. A lot of thrilling and touching moments of course. Lots of, I mean, nah I can say 99% of reaction videos including ones from even vocal trainers didn't feel that much of the very moments of delicated&incredible technics throughout a song but just pretended to be touched in every single moments, or just reacted emotionally with saying like "her voice is good" thing. But I could enjoy watching your emotion changes. Anyway, beautiful song, and delightful reaction.

Yes, the queen. So Hyang... her goal is to use her voice to comfort people who are going through difficult times. She is known for her emotive and powerful vocals and meticulous control. She's a cancer survivor and therefore cant have kids and is very vulnerable to diseases. She refused label contracts and sings mostly in churches or for charity and on special occasions, she is very humble and down to earth person which doesnt look for fame and money. Her showcased vocal range spans from D3 to A6 (consistent supported range from G#3 to E6), a total of three octaves, three notes and a semitone. Hope to see more, i would recommend "Bridge Over Trouble Water" "Monalisa" "Where Are You" I see a lot of people recommending "You Raise Me Up" just want to point it out that because of the chemo, her immunity is low so she's often sick, in that particular performance she had Pneumonia, and was told by the doctors she shouldn't even speak but she still went and chose to sing and gave that amazing performance.

The emotion she has is so raw and you end up crying by the end of the song. It's rare when a person can touch you so strongly with a song. They can have to most beautiful voice but without the emotion as you talked about, it just doesn't reach you all the way where your literally in tears. There was happiness, sadness, and they were so intense. It feels you up and the tears start flowing. Thank you for reacting to this performance. It's been one of my favorites for years. There's only less than a handful of songs that make me cry just from hearing them.

This is a phenomenal breakdown and by far my favorite 'vocal coach reacts' video on Sohyang yet. I can see others have already communicated this, but you have to know that commentary of your caliber (i.e your focus on the anatomy of her technique, the emotional impact as an extension of the techniques she chooses) is very rare. I wanted you to interject MORE because every time you did, the analysis was just as riveting as the performance. ... More, actually, not only because I've watched this particular performance enough times on my own to not require lengthy reverent silences from you, but more so because your analysis helped me appreciate gems that I'd never even noticed in it before, like the emphasis on the third consecutive high note that she throws in at 10:24. Even if all that wasn't enough, your reactions were so heartfelt and genuine that it brought me to tears all over again. Amazing video and amazing content overall -- thank you!!!

Hi John. Your reaction is typical of those who get their first listen to Kim So Hyang. She is a once in a lifetime singer and for my money the best female vocalist in the world right now! She reduced me to tears the first time I heard her sing Bridge over Troubled Water. Here it is. Would you please do a review of it? It is her very best performance. She put so much of herself into the song that she nearly fell over when she got backstage. I don't think she knows how to mail in a performance! kzread.info/dash/bejne/dWqdqsptqaXec9I.html She is currently 42 years old (actually 41 but Koreans count you as one year old when you are born) and had cervical cancer just after she got married at age 20. She can't have children due to this, and to this day suffers periodical bouts of pneumonia and other medical problems because of it almost every year! She is a Christian and has recently asked people to pray for her return to long lasting good health. I think she is utterly beautiful as well! What more can a red-blooded Canadian guy say??? :)

Up until maybe last year I was one of those people out there who knew about SoHyang's ability to hit all those high notes from various tv shows and such but never really seriously listened to her sing. However after re-visiting her performance recently from Immortal Songs and other shows I really have to give it to SoHyang that she may be one of the greatest singers alive now. I am almost at a point these days where I can't listen to other singers perform because a lot of times I feel that they lack emotion and the amazing and beautiful vocal prowess like SoHyang's just isn't present. Thank you for a great review, and I could recommend you Bridge over Troubled Water from many of other great ones she sang in the past. You will probably love it. Subscribed!
