if i'm not wrong the original song is called Arirang and Arirang Alone and So Hyang's rendition/take on the song

@@Hattorin. The original folk song was called Arirang and is hundreds of years old. Arirang Alone was written in the 90's by a man who had to leave 2 gown children in North Korea. Or this is what I was told with an explanation of some of the lyrics. Quote: "Arirang represents the suffering and tribulation (Arirang 'Hill') overcome as people and the nation. If we’re together as one holding hands, we can make it over the hill. Arirang Alone is a modern adaptation (released in 1990) of the original song written in the hope of reunification of Koreas. It’s a song of hope and peace. It tells a fantasy of the Island of Dokdo floating in the East Sea all alone singing Arirang. If Dokdo sang Arirang, alone in the Eat Sea, would North and South reunite? Dokdo is islets centrally located between Mount Baekdu (in northern border of North Korea) and Mount Halla (in Jeju Island, South Korea). Let’s ride a boat together from Baekdu and Halla. When we dock our boats at Dokdo, we’ll witness a new dawn together. The songwriter’s parents had to leave two sons and a daughter in North Korea during the war. His father’s dying wish to him was “when Korea reunite, go find your older brothers and sister and tell them that their parents did not abandoned them”. Where everyone in the audience sings along is where Sohyang incorporated the original Arirang lyric and melody."

She is known as Mariah, Celine , Whitney of South Korea to many reactors! Sohyang is one of the best vocalist in the world we have right now. Her vocal technique is an Art! Please dive deep into her live performances you will know how great vocalist she is!

@@mahdifalahi5900that statement makes no sense, they could do things Sohyang can’t do and viceversa. As example, all the ladies in the Trinity had more core in the lower chest (C4-G4) quite consistently while Sohyang voice could get lost in that area. Not to mention that the trinity has way more agile voices than Sohyang and also a way better sense of pitch and musicality

Sohyang is phenomenal. She is a one-in-a-billion live performer.

Sohyang is such a legend! One of the best vocals in Korea! Her performance of Everyone is amazing. It’s one of the hardest songs she’s done vocally and skill wise I believe.

Don’t be lulled in to thinking that Sohyang is a traditional Korean singer because she isn’t. She is a gospel singer at heart but can literally sing any genre, which hopefully you are now going to discover four yourself, but it just happened to be that the theme of that show that week was ‘traditional’. If you are in any doubt just have a look at her tackling song usually associated with Whitney. I don’t think at this moment you have any idea that you have taken your 1st steps in to the world of Sohyang, IMO, along with so many others, the best female vocalist currently on the planet. A big statement I know but if you appreciate amazing vocals she will not disappoint you, because she never disappoints, she only has one level of performance & that is ‘amazing’. Welcome to the world of Sohyang my friend. Buckle up because you are about to embark on the ride of your life 👍

To answer your question, Arirang is obviously a folk song, but Sohyang is much more of a modern gospel singer than anything(as I'm sure you figured out once she started belting her ass off). If you want to hear a fun comparison between the two styles, Song Sohee, who I believe you've reacted to before has also done Arirang Alone and the contrast between their singing styles is really interesting.

SoHyang is a class of her own. Exploring her musical world will be a new experience! 😂

This is the first song I've heard from her... as i was practicing for our ARIRANG choir presentation for Korean visitors in our University ...that time I don't know she's the one who sung the "WIND SONG" one of my fave korean OST... she's one of my fave korean solo singers...

@@oahuhawaii2141 no, we just did it as choir version, the common way to sing Arirang and not her version... Her piece was sooo great for a solo ... As a singer myself I know her range is far from what I can sing.

Pansori, traditional Korean singing, makes me cry like a baby. I drive with a ytmusic kpop station, and Oneus has slapped me in the face a couple of times with Luna and Intro : 창 (窓 : Window), which both feature pansori, while I was driving and I had to pull over.

So Hyang is amazing. She took some time off because she got pneumonia repeatedly. But came back on Begin Again.

To give this song some context, this song was sung by prisoners of war during the war with Japan who were being led over Arirang hill to be massacred. and during the Korean civil war. It was to encourage everyone's heart.
