Her vocals along with the violinist are my favorite in this performance! Fantastic melody and balance use of her vocals without overpowering the message and theme to this folk song.

Do you know the story behind her awesome talent? She has always been singing, but when she was 20 years old and newly married she got cancer in her stomach and had to go through several operation. Because of this, she can never have children. But being member of the church she got people praying for her, and she survived the cancer. Because of this she sees her life a gift from God, and she wanted to dedicate her life and singing to Him. She said she wants her singing to comfort people who are in pain, telling them “I see you- I’ve been there”. She has since then almost exclusively been singing at churches at home and abroad, at charity events, or events to honor other artist - meaningful events, and avoided taking part in the big music industry. She has been contacted many times by international managers who could help her getting famous here in the West (she is famous in Asia, despite her limited performances), but she has always refused. Now she is about 41 years old (she looks so much younger!) and the last few years she has been participating in South Korean music contests on TV. When she first started singing on these TV shows she was very conflicted if this was the right thing to do. But then she saw a woman in the audience crying while she was singing, and she realised that her calling was to reach out to everyone who is hurting, not just people in church. ❤️ She not only has an outstanding talent and the most beautiful voice, her singing touches people in a way that is hard to explain, a gift from above. Sohyang is a beautiful singer. Her spirit is beautiful. She is a devout Christian and "God makes her sing" to comfort people. If you think this is something, you definitely need to hear her sing "Everyone". IMHO, Sohyang shines the brightest when her gospel roots come out. (She started out by singing in church). You might want to have some tissues nearby. Makes me cry every time.

Arirang is a very special song for Koreans. It may not be well known to those who do not know Korean history. Arirang is a song of Korean people who has experienced Korean spirit, joy, sorrow and suffering. Perhaps it is peace around the world.

I pick up exactly the same elements from her. She seems to be genuinely committed to giving rather than taking, focused on others rather than herself. A perfect alchemy of prodigious talent and pure heart.

There's nothing wrong with you today. It's not you, it's her. I'm a cold, aloof, emotionally stunted former guitar player for a bunch of hardcore punk rock bands. Quite often music that brings tears to other people's eyes makes me cringe because it just seems so phony and cheesy. And while I'm impressed as everyone should be by singers who have a wide range and exceptional control, I'm not impressed in a way that makes me emotional. Sohyang has an effect on me that no other singer's ever had, at least not consistantly. I guess there have been a few over the years who had their moments, drew a tear in one particularly powerful performance. But Sohyang does it almost every time. She brings emotions out of me that I didn't know I still had. I hope she never stops singing. I really like the way you do your reactions. Very respectful to the artist and insightful commentary. Yeah I have a similar experience to you. One of the few others that does this is Roy Khan when he was in Kamelot.

Probably the special part of this song from 06:08 must be not only one of the most emotional parts in all her songs but the most dramatic and stunning highlights I've ever heard and seen in my whole life. She's a master of that. 💖 She's not just about techniques, which is also obviously virtuoso league. There's a reason I often advise reactors to bring tissue, whenever I recommend one of Sohyang's performance, just in case. 😊 You are also spot on about her assessment about why she is beautiful. It's not like she's unaware how great she is. She trained herself really hard to reach her level. There are old performances videos of Sohyang the "singer" in her 20s, before she becomes Sohyang the "virtuoso" in her 30s. She knows where she stacks up, singing technique wise, in comparison to the rest, including her previous self. Yet, she remains grounded, not ruled by inflated ego, the usual and unfortunate tendency of human beings who had reach the pinnacle of mastery of their respective skill/art. Her "mission", literally and figuratively, remains unchanged: sing to console, comfort, give hope to the weary. She is a beautiful soul. 🙏

I didn't like the old man group (3 Gen) and they beat SoHyang's Arirang Alone. Unbelievable. Someone commented that SoHyang's Arirang Alone was too modernised for the theme of the competition.

@Ignatius Chua: Oddly, some rapper, who ran up and down through the aisles, got the whole audience involved. He scored even higher than Sohyang and the 3-gen traditional male singers. And the winner of the show performed last; she sang a simple maritime folksong in a traditional manner with minor changes. Yet, of the 7 acts that day, only Sohyang's "Arirang Alone" is memorable. That arrangement and performance is epic -- enough to bring non-Koreans to tears.

The song "Arirang Alone" is a song written by Handol, referring to Arirang, which has been spoken. He prayed for the unification of South Korea and North Korea on the theme of Dokdo. Arirang is a traditional korean song. Arirang has been sung for hundreds of years. The word "Arirang" expresses the sentiments of Koreans who have suffered foreign aggression and hardships in life for hundreds of years. Among the lyics "Dokdo" is island in East sea(means Korea's eastern sea). Dokdo has been a territory of Korea since 512, but in 1905, Japan captured Dokdo during the Russo - Japanese War and incorporated it into its territory. This is because Dokdo was the military key point of the Russo-Japanese War. Japan surrendered in the Second World War, liberating Korea from the colonies and signing the return of Dokdo and other islands. However, Japan is now claiming territorial sovereignty over Dokdo and creating territorial disputes. That's why the lyrics "Dokdo, did you hang in alright last night?". And Baekdusan is the highest mountain in North Korea, and Hallasan is the highest mountain in South Korea. Originally, South and North Korea were one, but they were divided after World War II and are out of reach. So the lyrics, "Going by boat from Baekdu to Halla," mean the division of Korea and ending the suffering of the Korean War and wishing for reunification and peace.

When you talk about So Hyang, you have already explained the purpose of So Hyang's singing. She is a gospel singer that is why she sing to cheer people. She sang for God. I cried for almost So Hyang's performance. She brought a lot of emotions to her performance. There are so many fo them. Do you know she is a cancer survivor and now suffer pneumonia. Im not sure she still sick or not because the last time I knew she suffered from pneuomonia was in 2017 during You Raise Me Up performance. Maybe you can react to it later.
