I have been waiting for you to see this one! This video doesn't get much attention, but it is such a great look into the world of Angelina. This really shows what a legit artist she is. She can work with a room full of grown adult musicians and just fit right in like she's been doing it for 40 years... at 9 years old! It's just incredible. I'm so glad you finally got to this one :)

She is so completely confident of her place in this group. They've clearly accepted her uncritically for a long time. She's done the dues, put in the time. Almost equally amazing is the hours and days her mother Sara must have sat on that chair in the corner (figuratively) giving Angelina the opportunities.

Angelina continues to evolve artistically, using these crazy skills she developed almost as a toddler. Musical genius is exactly right, I believe. I enjoy your reactions to Angelina, as a jazz musician who can explain to us how jazz works and can appreciate how sophisticated AJ is as a jazz musician. Thanks, Valerie, for your generosity and creativity!

    1. An important thing to remember about AJ is that she owns the rights to everything she sings and with aquired permissions for covers of other singers. 2. She refused to sign for a record deal through AGT and they relented and invited her to sing anyway. 3. She began singing at 18 months and due to her grandmothers influence, she was drawn to and fell in love with jazz and blues music. 4. She has been arranging most, if not all of her music performances since she was 8 years old. 5. Currently in 2022 she still performs barefoot, sews her own clothes, (the cloth is designed by her grandmother) and she stands 6 feet tall at 15 yeats old! 6. We all hope to enjoy her performances for many years to come. 7. BTW I'm 80 and have been involved privately in music since age 7.

Angelina thoroughly understood jazz at a super young age. Jazz seems to be her native musical language. We have her grandmother to thank for that. I hope that she brings more people, especially young people to an appreciation of that great genre. It's great to see the band playing off each other, responding musically to each other, and appreciating the experience.

AJ hears and incorporates every musical line from every instrument. She's really two people: one singing and one totally aware of everything around her, including the camera. It's called brilliance. Her expectations of herself, and everyone performing with her, is at the very highest level. That is why she is NOT like other prodigies and just gets better and better. NOTE: Just listened to the end of your comments. I've said before, and agree with you completely, that Michael Jackson is one of the very few prodigies who maintained his level of performance from childhood through his teenage years through adulthood. I think AJ has absolutely done that as well.

She’s never been intimidated by big bands, orchestras or crowds. She said one time that she never gets nervous while performing. Apparently she never gets nervous when working with adult musicians either! You saw her mom sitting there, and her grandmother is usually the one videoing the sessions. She’s about 9 here-doesn’t she look tiny? I wish they would have produced the audio of this song. She changed it from Portrait of a Man to Portrait of a Child. She’ll tackle anything! Thank you so much for sharing your expertise with us.

What a great explanation of prodigy burn out. As others catch up, the adulation one received as a child diminishes. Adulation is addictive, and when it is gone or recedes, that can be a big let down. But as you said, Angelina has continued to grow and improve. She is committed to being the best possible version of herself at any time in her life. And she remains focused, determined, and dedicated to her goals and dreams. I also think the pandemic, which of course is a horrible thing, has been a very good thing for her growth as an artist and a person. It slowed things down and gave her an opportunity to write and to have personal reflective time. And Republic seems to be allowing her to progress at her pace. The things she has created with Rob Christie ("7th Heaven" and "All I Ask"), the studio manger at Republic's L. A. Studio and a Grammy winning producer, I believe are the best in her career. So while she was a phenom as a young child, she has always continued to improve. I see no signs of that changing. Great analysis Valerie! 💕💕

That's why every band she works with they call her 'The Boss'. You're correct in saying she is very equitable in her finding the heart of the band and the song, but when she makes a decision about how the song is going to go that's it. I don't know if you went to Sunday school but this setting reminds me of the time when Jesus when he was around 12-13 was lost and his parents couldn't find him. Finally they found him standing in the middle of the religious leaders answering questions about the scripture. That's what this scene reminds me of. The verse, "and a child shall lead them", also comes to mind. Whatever this video conjures up for you is great. I just saw this small child who knew what she was talking about, directing how things were to proceed. The Boss indeed. Oh, that trumpet player isn't much older than Angelina is he? I also noticed she is figuring out when to come into the music and when not to. That can be problematic for adults let alone an 8 or 9 year old. Thanks for your reaction.

Angelina was born to sing, she is the music. This is obviously in her Jay Hawkins period, she used this studio several times, so having tried "Portrait of a man" she did "I put a spell on you". I think that she made the right choice with that one, same musicians, clearly they established a very good working relationship! Her understanding of music and voice is so deep at this young age, as you say, as she gets older it becomes more challenging to establish a presence amongst the more mature artists, as she continually works on developing her own styles I trust that more and more people will become aware of her and appreciate her talent. Of course her real strength is with live performances, when she is able to put on her summer concerts she will really take off!

"Painting a portrait in oil" is an extended metaphor used as the heart of the song. He uses "all the colors of blue" on his stand. Blue= sad, the blues, pain, sorrow, burdens, etc. At the end of the song he turns the image around with, "I am the man." So, it is a self-portrait. Meditate on that for deeper meaning. That's what I love about the best songs, especially the old ones: They contain poetry. Angelina herself writes....as does her artist grandmother, the one who played all the old jazz/blues vinyls for her from infancy on. I just listened several times to the SJH original of this song. That double ending is done that way in the original. I have always felt the pain of others, and it is so marvelous to witness this capacity in Angelina, and how she conveys that heart/spirit in the songs.... yes, an old soul.

Her name is Darci Lynne her last surprise performance on a major talent show was a rendition of the Italian opera "Mio Babbino Caro", singing through her adorable bunny puppet "Petunia" ,all the while never moving her lips and smiling all the way through this opera and operating her puppet to perfection and sung the opera high notes and all with no mouth movement what so ever. link to it here ( kzread.info/dash/bejne/oI18ktumdb28dKg.html ) . Portrait of a legendary child. This was really a nice tribute to the original "Portrait of a man". You mentioned an interesting topic at the end, namely that many child "stars" (actors and singers) pay a heavy price after a short-lived career. They had that one sensational performance on TV, get pushed to the limits and then eventually crash hard and will be forgotten. In Angelina's case, however, I think she's on a good way to turn the corner. Her popularity is not decreasing as she gets older, on the contrary it's constantly increasing regardless of her change of voice and looks. Which is a good sign. Let's just pray to God that her popularity will continue to grow in a healthy way.

It is such a delight to watch this. Often when I see (very) young singers I ask myself if they are pressed by the parents to do something or not. This video is clear: for Angelina singing real music with real musicians is her 'playground' and she is enjoying every second of it. And it is so good to see that the older musicians are taking her so seriously and having a very good time as well: nothing can be a better motivation for her. If I am correct: I think these are the same musician as in the almost iconic cover 'I put a spell on you' in black and white she did when she was 9. I guess she is about the same age here.

I've noticed, in the rehearsals I've seen, that Angelina doesn't appear to try to perform how she will for the live performance. Rather she tries different things and sometimes jokes around, but when you see the lived performance she always rises to the occasion.

I'm so disappointed i couldn't hear her above the harshness of the musician's sound. I did enjoy seeing her, her Mother, and your reaction helped, too! Thank you for the lovely reaction. I love to learn.

I agree with you. Her mic could have been turned up more. But I love seeing musicians working things out in the moment. They were so impressed with her. So much emotional and musical maturity for someone so young.

I've said in other comments before, that Angelina is best when she is interacting with a live band instead of a recorded track. She plays off of the instruments and the ebb and flow of the music like a conversation. She simply becomes another contributing instrument in the creation of the final artistic expression. In this regard, she is more professional and seasoned and has more musical intelligence than many of the popular "pop" stars out there. Great reaction and analysis. If you've never heard it before, Screamin Jay Hawkin's original performance of "Portrait of a Man", the source for this cover, is a fantastic listen. - kzread.info/dash/bejne/mp6NubNsdr2_lJc.html

Awesome review. I've heard literally 300 reviews and this one was the best. I liked hearing about the notes and tones more that the obvious shock of how great she is. I know that. I want to dissect the voice and gift. What is happening here. Its so amazing. I can't carry a note to save my life but I appreciate the healing she sends to my brain. What is THAT about?

Thank you Valerie. You broke down so much about some of the intricacies into how much AJ already knows at 8 or 9 yo. I love all of these rehearsal videos. My favorite is"Angelina Jordan rehearsal (AT LAST) Part 1 2014", at 8 years old trying to get the band to perform the way she wants and shows her displeasure. It is for a charity event in the auditorium. I would love to get your views on it. Thanks again.

I really appreciate reactions from people who know what they're talking about and really understand what they're hearing. There are a lot of "Reactors" out there that use Angie as clickbait and you can tell she's going right over their heads. The only good thing about that is that many people who watch those reactions are more sophisticated than the Reactors themselves and appreciate that what they're hearing is something special they wouldn't have heard otherwise.
