protips to avoid peaking/clipping (around 3 min in): when dialing the gain on your mic preamp, shoot for your signal to hit about -14 db on your meters, (either in your DAW or if you have an audio interface with a control app, in there.) just over halfway up. don't have to be exact but it's a good sweet spot to try and hover around. this may seem quiet but it leaves headroom not only for dynamic performances that would induce unwanted peaking/clipping/distortion during the noisy bits AND it leaves headroom for any processing (EQ, compression, limiting, fx, etc.) that may make your signal a bit louder. Gain structure is your best friend, when you are recording and editing, be mindful of all of the places in your workflow where you're making your signal louder, and make sure that you're not peaking on your output channel before you do any master buss processing (limiter, ozone, bus compression, etc.) or those peaks earlier on in your process will come back to haunt you. hope this helps someone stay safe, wash your hands, rest, and create.

Explanation for the last scene where the guy was crying but he got over it: That scene was from the English version of a digimon movie that was actually 3 different movies horribly cut into one, and some of the scenes from each movie are cut for pacing, and in turn killed the pacing for the scene where the dude was crying over the saddest story he’s ever heard, where in the japanese version, it’s more drawn out and is actual dialogue that relates to the plot.

19:03. There is a reason that the change in emotion was so sudden with this one. The Japanese version of this movie was normal, the scene was more drawn out and the mood change was gradual. When they dubbed it in the US, they mashed it together with another movie from the franchise and sold them together. Because of this, the original movie had its runtime essentially cut in half, and this mood swing was a product of the cut runtime. There are a bunch of scenes from the American dub of this movie that don't make a whole lot of sense for these reasons, like the example that was given.

The Digimon Movie America got was a thrown together combination of a special episode meant to be watched before the series, a short film called Our War Game and a longer but still not full length movie (which I do not know the name of) which is why it was so in pieces. Though even in the original version while better, it was quite sudden still

KH's english voices are good for the most part but some actors are just weirdly inconsistent. But I do think it's a matter of direction. In KH3, Alyson Stoner sounds way too soft and innocent as Kairi, (especially when she fights and never really shouts in her battle cries), But then she voices Xion and suddenly BOOM, awesome performances

  • @AntiSoraXVI

@@smashingcroissant9894 it's definitely the voice direction. People keep saying KH has bad voice acting and it bugs me because there's no way an actor does great sometimes and super poorly other times. From what I've seen, Japanese VO is almost always done after the animation is complete, unlike american cartoons where it's other way around. They made a point for when producing Akira that some scenes were actually done with the voices first and then the animation which was unusual. Usually if voice work is done on sketches/pre-vis that means the production is troubled because they're behind, sometimes they don't get to finish an episode until right before it goes live.

When Mamoru Hosoda was screening Mirai in the US, he said that in anime animators generally do it before the actors because they think having that freedom is better for the animators and that the animation itself is more important. That's partly why their lip shapes are pretty vague. There are other reasons too I'm sure, but it's quite a contrast to the US where half the budget can be on casting celebrities.

That was the dub for the "Digimon Movie" which was actually three movies just mashed into one. They are all pretty coherent in their original japanese versions, but they had to cut a LOT out of the dub so they could fit all three movies into a reasonable length. That specific spot originally had a lot more time for the characters to naturally talk things out, but the dub ain't got time for that and thus we were graced with that masterpiece.

I know the Bob's Burgers cast all filmed their lines in the same area, it's what helped with the natural flow of dialogue. It's easier to pretend you're talking to someone when they're right next to you. It makes a fluid conversation. Comparatively, Elder Scrolls Oblivion only had 12 voice actors for the entire game, a game filled with countless characters (Given bandits and thugs respawn), it leads to an awkward conversation when you're talking to a guard with the same voice as the emperor.

Lol I'm autistic so I'm kind of having problems with showing my emotions. But even I am better at voice acting than most of them xD It's propably because I've always "analysed" how people express themselves in order to learn how to do it. The only thing I'm not good at are emotional scenes xD I just didnt get the hang of that yet. (To clear things up: I can feel every emotion just as good ad anyone else, I Just don't know how to express it.)

I agree about the Mion part! I think her voice sounds interesting especially for a yandere type character but the animation is completely wrong for it. It should be a scene maybe where she knocks him off the ladder and looks down at him calmly as she says the line.

I feel like the problem with Kingdom hearts isn't the voice acting so much as it is the dialogue, which seems to be a problem with square stuff in general (I haven't played FFVII yes so I can't comment on that) but in games like FFXV the voice actors are doing a good job but the dialog never really fits what is going on in the world quite right.

  • @kaznosa

I thought FFVII did a fantastic job with dialogue. There was really only a couple instances where it was a bit strange, but it was always the script's fault.

“Dubbing is done before animating” Wait, really? I mean, what about “pre-recording” and then animators can get a reference of expression and then the 2nd recording happens so the voice actor can observe and analyze the scene and act on it??? Is it too expensive to do that, or is it simply not effective???

  • @shinyanakagawa8241

    @shinyanakagawa8241

That could happen but very rare. It only happens when they need to add additional lines to some cuts or they messed up or lost the recorded lines. In most cartoons and anime, they dubbed over the animatics (storyboard spliced according to cuts, sometimes contain rough key animation for the reference purpose) first and animators will animate accordingly to boards and uses the voice acting as reference as well as the lipsync (or in anime, lip flaps). It is actually very hard for the voice actors to act (doable but difficult) and to match the actions and lipsync according to fully animated scenes. The most efficient way to do it is to voice act according to storyboards (animatics) and let animators and sound director do the rest of the works afterwards.

There’s an anime called seiyu’s life. That’s the anime that taught me how different dubbing is for Japanese and English. I was surprised to find out in the anime that they do in fact record before the animation. Made me realize how harder it is for English voice actors to match the lips.

They do sometimes show the in betweens they are able to complete for the anime at the time they’re doing the VA production. But besides that and the script, it’s all up to the actor’s imagination and portrayal to hold it all together. It’s also to make sure the production is done on time and to avoid crunch as much as possible.
