Ойын-сауық

Japan's hotels are typically amongst the cleanest in the world. This one wasn't.

Fun fact: James May visited the scarecrow village as well, back in 2019 for his travel documentary. He had the chance to speak with the Ayano-san about her scarecrows and she made James May scarecrow for him. You can vaguely see it at 10:07 on the right side of the gym and the far right of the shot; it is wearing a blue shirt, has blond hair and is situated behind the outstretched hand.

That hotel room was giving me all sorts of anxiety attacks. That pillow you laid your head on had blood on it. I wouldn't be surprised if that ammonia smell was their failing attempt to prevent black mold. The walls are falling apart before your eyes. I'm surprised that you only found a dead fly. I expected you to pull back the bedding and find a horror movie of insects and body fluids that would make a criminal pathologist vomit. My sister once booked a room that just had bed bugs. I thought it couldn't be worse than that. Playing "Guess the Stain" wins the trauma award.

honestly it might not get worse than even just bedbugs, bedbugs spread like wildfire and its very likely youll bring some with you to your home or spread them anywhere else you happen to go after being exposed- everything else is gross and unpleasant but doesn't actively spread like a disease or cause ongoing harm by biting like they do. Even black mold is unlikely to harm you in the short term aside from making you feel kinda bad if its a very serious mold infiltration (allergies aside).

Full confession: I rewatch Chris's videos A LOT. I love the discovery and exploration of them on the first go, but they're jampacked with so many different things and jokes that it makes them super rewatchable with so many different facets to each video, but also surprisingly comforting and relaxing. I often find that my KZread algorithm brings me back down an Abroad in Japan rabbit hole that I'm pretty much always down for. All this is to say, I've rewatched this video many times, but I always forget that the worst hotel room has this amazing visit to the scarecrow village embedded in it, and I get this epic wave of warm melancholy, almost nostalgia, when that music comes up and we enter the scarecrow village. Chris has endlessly great editing, but this is one of the segments where I feel Chris's sensibilities really shine: Connor is stating how sad the whole situation is, almost afraid, it could have been edited like a horror movie; instead, Chris turns to this soft, melancholic tone that is also bright and hopeful, turning it into this gorgeous moment of seeing the loss of the village through so many different lenses at once, while still having this bumbling Welshman make jokes throughout. I just love it.

Not gonna lie, I really expected Connor to suddenly fess up and say that he was messing with Chris and actually booked another hotel and never intended to stay the night but the dude was so convinced he could live through it and didn't make a plan B. The funniest part is that Connor was the one pushing that they leave. Chris was 100% willing to stay the night if not for the hepatitis bed.

The theory was that this hotel is just there to be used by some criminal organization or Yakuza for money laundering purposes so they don't really care about the quality of the hotel and its cleanliness. @@AbroadinJapan My brother was basically dying. Not even a joke. He’s only about 120 pounds (54.4 kilos) when he should be around 170 pounds (77.1 kilos). It’s really hard to describe exactly what’s happened, but the mold gets in your gut mostly, and starts absorbing nutrients and things from food you eat, and robs medications of their effectiveness. It messed with us a lot psychologically as well. We were basically losing our minds, and as soon as we moved back home, we saw improvements within a week. My brother’s part of the house was particularly bad so I can’t explain it as well. One of the first warning signs we missed was our shallow breathing. Our normal doctor we’d see for unrelated things noticed this, and apparently it’s your body’s way of trying to stop you from inhaling more of the mold. I took deep breaths over a few minutes and actually buzzed from the oxygen a little 😆. This probably wasn’t very helpful, so my apologies. But it’s hard to put into words the toll it took on us. We’re doing much better now, but my brother is still heavily effected.

Also based on the matress, blood too 😂 Or drip marks from trying to scrub the blood out of the what was once white walls and they just said fuck it, good enough. The mold actually could partially be from that too. It's not enough to just clean blood up, but parts of the wall and floor usually have to be professionally cleaned and removed to prevent odors and mold from sticking around. They probably cut corners and just told their housekeepers to clean it (who already clearly don't care about their job that much to not even check under the beds 😅). That whole room needs to be torn down from all the damage and completely redone. But hey, at least there was no bug problems? Lol

Mold, dried blood (yes, it is most likely blood on the walls), actually filthy, dusty as all hell, dead insects, beds are probably crawling with mites. Yeah nah, staying there for even an hour was risky, especially when Connor said he was feeling sick. That hotel should actually be shut down, it's a health hazard. Also like they said in the video, $60 for one night yet they can get a 4* hotel for $30 that is perfect for a night's sleep. How does that even make sense? I mean obviously this place doesn't get customers so they've hiked up the price to compensate but how are they still in business? I can guarantee people have left that place ill more often than not. Just baffles me how a hotel can be so filthy and grimey. I thought Gordon Ramsays Hotel Hell was bad but jeez, this is up there with the absolute worst of them.

It would have been brilliant if they had a black light with them to shine on the bedding and walls. I suspect they wouldn't have needed the incandescent room lights to illuminate the room. The glow from the various bodily fluids on the walls and bedding would be sufficient.

The music used in the scarecrow village was... It's a very specific emotion to me. It's melancholic, but it also instills a sense of fear in me. The music feels like it mixes both of those emotions into one and it makes the hair on the back of my neck stands up. I get goosebumps listening to it. The melody just goes up a bit too high, like elated, while the chords are so sad. It's like a person laughing unsettlingly loud and happily at a funeral. I really like it but I also kinda don't wanna hear it. It makes me feel unsettled.
