Ow...it is such a pleasant surprise to get your reaction video of Sohyang's Arirang Alone. Always love it when someone knowledgeable of vocal pedagogy discovers Sohyang. It's a joy to see her artistic craft properly appreciated and enjoyed. It's clear that you enjoy those vocal feats Sohyang included in her rearranged Arirang Alone. You are correct that this is originally a traditional Korean folk song with relatively straight-forward melody. Sohyang revamped it into an epic drama with modern elements and vibrant dynamics. Technically Sohyang's singing may be as flawless as one would find but you demonstrates the real reason people love Sohyang when you becomes emotionally caught up in her performance. She ability to connect is such a rare gift I don't see often elsewhere. Keen observation and pointed comment on sharing the attention and so very perceptive of you to divine Sohyang's humility and kindness as an individual. If you know her more, you will be enamored by her as a person, in addition to being a phenomenal singer. BTW, when Disney released Moana in South Korea, Sohyang was invited to sing the title track "How Far Will I Go" for its release. Hope to see you visit Sohyang again. Many have suggested Sohyang's performances. They are all good. For my two cents, I'd mention "Bridge Over Troubled Water" at kzread.info/dash/bejne/dWqdqsptqaXec9I.html PS: Appreciate your perspective on the whitewashing of western music. Frankly, I hope the music labels in the West will learn to pay more attention to music diversity soon before other parts of the world leave them behind in the dust in time.

She is 42 years old this year. I think this performance was done about 3 years ago. She is a survivor of cervical cancer and because of the operation that she had she cannot have any children. She decided that she was called to use her voice to heal hearts and comfort those who are down-and-out and going through hard times. She is a very serious Christian and also does missionary work. She is also an author and has written I think 3 fiction books. She's also an incredible cartoonist. At 1 time her goal was to be a Disney cartoonist. And she did do the voice for the Korean version of Moana. She is an incredible individual.

Welcome to Sohyang's world. Thank you for your lovely reaction and knowledges. You need to check her life story if you want to figure out why people loves her so much and why she becomes a different (read: better) singer than the others. It's not about techniques and skills, it's way more deeper than that. An amazing person in and out of stage. One more thing, she's an ultimate tear jerker, she never failed on that, so don't worry, don't hold the tears, we've been there, still there, and always be there. Very excited for your next reaction of her. Cheers^^.

Sohyang is outstanding! One of the best vocalists ever in my opinion! Her technique and musicality are both just insane! You should check out her performances of "Everyone" and "Bridge Over Troubled Water" next! She's a very versatile vocalist, but her roots are in gospel, and those two performances incorporate more of that gospel flare.

@Kyle Pomare Dimash, while his melodic vocal range is extremely impressive, he can't even support most of his range. Sohyang can support the entirety of her range, her mid and upper belts are resonant, and most of all, her technique is healthy. That explains the longevity of her singing career.

Thank you for reacting to So Hyang. To me she's one of the best female vocalists out there, she's a rollercoaster. Would love to see you react to more of her stuff. So Hyang is a South Korean singer known for her controlled, skillful, and developed voice who has been dubbed by the international media as the "Korean Mariah Carey". Sohyang's parents divorced when she was in her third year of high school. Due to this, Sohyang experienced great financial difficulties, and, according to her, was often very sad as a result. At the age of twenty, she was diagnosed with uterine cancer, due to the early detection, she was able to survive the cancer, but was rendered infertile. Because of the many chemo she went through, she's often sick, actually in her "You Raise Me Up" performance she had Pneumonia and was told by her doctor that she shouldn't even talk that day but she still went and sang and have us THAT performance while sick, would love you see you react to that. She has gotten many and many proposes from companys to work fo them and getting paid and be a succesful singer but she never accepted any because she really doesn't have interest in making that kind of money. She's a devout Christian. She first began singing in her local community, with no aspirations of pursuing a career as a professional singer. She has said her only goal is to use her voice to comfort people who are going through difficult times. Would recommend: "Dream" "Fate" "Bridge Over Troubled Water" "Lean On Me"

Kudos on wanting to expand your horizon. Kudos on getting the message of the song right away. Because, although Sohyang is indeed a technical beast (which you will find out even more once you review her many performances), she's also an emotive par excellence when it comes to understanding that singing is about communicating and connecting. You sensing "community" as the message of this song is a great example of that (this is the unofficial anthem of Korea. The people, not the Nations. It is a sense of identity, history, unity, etc). When she sings messages of hope and consolation, it feels like a blessing, when she sings love songs, especially the heartbreak ones, it feels aching. The emotive parts I said were subjective ofc, no matter how many testimonials we can find. But, objectively speaking, her technical achievements had already secured her a spot as one of the all time greats in vocal pedagogy history. This brings me to last but certainly not least of what makes her unbelievably unique. Because, despite knowing how damn good she was, Sohyang remains a humble personality. Rejecting national and international contracts, not having even one social media account or online presence to self-promote herself more, acts of charities, even down to her song choices, all of them testify and confirm what she said about not singing to chase fame or money. Calling her rare is an understatement indeed. Diva talent, without the diva attitude.

'this artist, is it So-Young? or So-HeeYang? sorry, is most highly requested artist by my subscribers, so here i am...' and then after a minute or so later, their eyes getting bigger and bigger and by the end of a song their facial expression all says 'OMG! I have always enjoyed Japanese music, but discovered Sohyang a year or so ago. Arirang Alone is a traditional Korean Folk song about the strife & sorrow of Korean families that were sadly torn apart with the North & South separation. They sing this song in the Hope of one day being all together again. And as you will find out by her many many followers online that will welcome you to the SoHyang World.. The more you get to know her background from comments, you will find out how humble, beautiful, talented she really is! And yes, she is one of the best artists in interacting with her fellow stage musicians as well her audience.. I love the way she seems to be smiling while singing too. This is all to match her awesome vocals! Please do more reactions of her.... Korean songs get the English lyrics so you can see the words(Everyone. Where are You, etc) English(Lean on Me, Bridge over Troubled Waters, You Raise me up) Her King of Masked Singers contest has some great vocals of her also! Hope to see you again soon!

I love Sohyang so much. She doesn't really perform a genre that I'm especially a fan of, but then again she doesn't just stick to one genre, which I appreciate greatly. But something about how she conveys the emotions of the story she's singing is so powerful. I mean aside from the fact that she's an astonishly gifted singer from a technical standpoint, because that's just a bonus. Her real gift is communication, and yes, you'll cry, everybody does, Sohyang's a very cathartic experience.

I really loved your reaction, Especially your humble attitude to learn about Korean music culture which you can't easily listen to. Arirang is Korean traditional lyrical folk song. Koreans regard Arirang as unofficial national anthem. Arirang contains the pain and sorrow, but also the will to overcome all those pains together as Korean. There are more than 60 versions of regional Arirang. Sohyang arranged Arirang as Sohyang version and this version was used by Korean figure skating team to perform on 2018 Pyeongchang winter olympic.

Firstly, great reaction & welcome to the world of so hyang(pron.soyang). Its funny that you mention dimash as she is often referred to as the 'queen' to dimash's 'king' when it comes to vocals. This is meant to be a simple traditional korean folk song but it has been turned in to something more epic by so hyang's arrangement(she does the arrangements for all her performances). She can sing any genre,as you will find out if you decide to further your so hyang journey.please dont think that because of this song & the fact that she's wearing traditional korean dress, that is what she's all about & you'll just end up watching more of the same because nothing could be further from the truth, this 'traditional' song is the exeption rather than the rule (obviously if you'd decided to start your journey with a different song you would've seen this already). What you said about how she made you feel even though you didn't understand the lyrics struck a chord with me because she is the only person(& dimash on the odd occasion) thar can regularly reduce me to tears when I have no idea what she's singing about & even more so when there are english subs (try watching her korean songs on vimeo as they usually have subs),she does sing quite often in english though. She is know for her clarity & how high she can go in mixed voice. Her signature note is Bb5 which she hits so sweetly, although she does go higher. You also mentioned the 'disney princess' thing so I thought you'd like to know that she is actually the voice of Moana in the official korean dubbed version of the film & there are video's available of her singing 'how far i'll go' etc. Once again, welcome to the incredible world of so hyang,I hope you continue this journey now you've taken your first steps & trust me,you will never regret taking the time to watch another so hyang performance. Finally, a dimash/so hyang duet!!! I could die a happy woman if this was to ever materialize 😇

Whatever you see next time, it becomes a new experience. I also fell into the world of Sohyang with this song. Since then, Everytime I look for her other performances,it always exceeded my expectations even if I already knew about her abilities. People often compare her to Dimash. Honestly, there's nothing in common between them, except they're just Asians. Dimash is definitely a unique singer. He has a rare head voice as a male singer and it seems to make him stand out. But that's it. He is still a young singer who needs to develop more in his tessitura and still learn. Sohyang is a mature singer who has already experienced for decades and is a singer who is technically at the master level Musically, they are also completely different. Dimash is an opera-based crossover singer and Sohyang is a contemporary singer rooted in gospel sound It doesn't make sense to refer to her as 'Female Dimash'. It seems to compare them too often because of the their commonality that just they are Asian.

Thank you for the thoughtful reaction and analysis. I strongly second the recommendations of Everyone and Dream. Americans often recommend familiar English language "pretty songs" like Bridge Over Troubled Water and You Raise Me Up and Oh Holy Night which are beautiful but have similar vocal tone, shadings and range and mislead as to her capabilities. Everyone is very powerful with a richer tone, greater range and dramatic arrangement (middle part in English). Dream is her own upbeat inspirational piece with jazzy elements and a strong finale. She arranged Lean on Me to build to a fast paced R&B and soul song with crazy vocals. Hug Me is a great example of her intensely emotional arrangements of Korean ballads (a few others are Breathe, Fate, Do You Know, Where Are You, Dear Love, Never Ending Story). She also covered rock spectactularly (Mona Lisa), hip hop (Day Day), and jazzy (Childish Adult, I Always Miss You, Misty). Day to day she is a gospel/CCM (Upon This Rock) and inspirational (Running to the Sky) singer and soundtrack artist (Wind Song, Only My Heart Knows).

I believe this is her masterpiece. She has religious and love songs that bring tears (many from me), but with those she has the lyrics and musical tradition working for her. But to evoke such emotion from an old folks song, to bare the heart of a people and bring tears to listeners with a parable of national rebirth and longing..... amazing.

Sohyang is an amazing self management gospel singer, she's 42, cancer survival, a beautiful woman with kind heart, she sing to comfort people through their hard times and for God's glory, and her voice her skills is on top of the world! I love your video and I hope you will make more reaction to her. My suggestion is 'Lean on me' from the show Immortal song 2. Thank you and have a nice day

Dimash is actually a male Sohyang. She's actually old enough to be his mother, a young one, but still. She's actually married and infertile so your dream of Sohyang/Dimash super babies is, unfortunately, not possible. A duet between them would be awesome, though

I recomend "Everyone" (my absolute favourite next to Arirang alone), "You raise me up", "Lean on me", "Mona Lisa" , "Hug me" and "Bridge over troubled water" as well as "Holy Night". Also you are very authentic and I liked your reaction. Greetings from Germany Stay safe ♥

Hi! I really liked your analysis on Sohyang's performance :) It is very interesting that you mention the sense of community that it made you feel, and the emotions it conveyed regardless of the language. "Arirang Alone" is a version of the Korean folk song "Arirang", which is over 600 years old. It is considered the non-official anthem of Korea and has a lot of historical importance to the nation. At the beginning of the 20th century, when the Korean peninsula was occupied by the Japanese Empire, the song was used as a resistance anthem against the Japanese colonial rule. Later, after the Korean war and division, the song has been used in several political and cultural events as a symbol of the nation's hope for reunification. Hence the beautiful lyrics arrangement of this version. It is really a very special song for the two Koreas and Sohyang beautifully transmits all the history and meaning behind it

So from what I understand the song is so old that it has so many variations and versions, but the version she's singing I think is Korea's anthem kind of song, it got the meaning they attach to it now after the end of the Japanese/Korean war, that's when South and North Korea split up, and it literally tore families, friends and lovers apart. So this song talk of the hope of reuniting with the each other. I'm glad you enjoyed her, she's one of my favorite singers and I don't have many. Also, a bit of background information about her, she almost died in her twenties due to cancer, when she survived she thought of it as a gift from God and she wanted to sing to heal others pains and tell them she's been there and she feels their pain. She still suffers from other illnesses, so from time to time she's preform while having pneumonia, which amazes me honestly. Anyway good luck with your discovery!
