I would add "You Raise Me Up" to that as well. That performance never fails to bring me to tears.

She began as a Gospel singer and this is an exercise in faith for her. There is a version with English subtitles but the parts that she does in English kinda give the idea of the song. Don't assume that she can't do Pop songs,. She loves old standards like "Bridge Over Troubled Water," "Lean on Me", "Misty", "I Have Nothing", and on. Great reaction Ken. Exactly where I was at 7 years ago when I first heard her sing , Bridge Over Troubled Water! I had never heard any Pop singer, sing the way she did, nor the way she had arranged the song(She does the arrangements, herself, with her team. Always shows respect for the original but makes you know it will be sung her way and to suit her style! She started singing in 1998 I believe with a Family Gospel Band POS, and a year later married her husband, who was the drummer! His Family is instrumental in her life and career! Her Father-in-law is her Manager, they all help in making decisions and her oldest sister-in-law, Jin Joo was the guitarist in DNCE, with one of the Jonas Brothers, and they are close, she does some guitar and back up work for her and was in at least two, of her videos(The Song Begins and Stay ) video both shot in USA as all but the youngest Sister-in-law, lives in the USA! Most of her singing the first 10-12 years was Gospel/Pop Gospel, she has sang in Churches in 50 or 60 different countries! She has turned down record deals twice so far! Shortly after her marriage she was diagnosed with Uterin Cancer! She survived but can not have children of her own! She believes God Saved her and she had made a Promise to him , while Praying for her life , she would sing for him and to lift the Spirits of those who suffer or are depressed! ( when she had gone through some very hard times after her father left her and her mother , she found comfort listening to Mariah, Celine and Whitney! When she entered her first of many singing contests ( 2009/10 or so) she began to realized if she was more well known she could reach more people! She suffers from chronic pneumonia at least the last 5-6 years, besides her Church Gospel dates she usually only does 1 or 2 concerts a year! Though this last year she did much more and in the Fall of 2019 even agreed to join , David Foster for a big Show ,he was producing in Tokoyo Japan, also several videos , also 7 shows in Begin Again Korea, a Live busking Show , for Korean TV (12 shows all together) , also she released several , OST’s , which are songs for Big scenes in Korean Dramas( which are huge all over the World now-a-days! This is on Vimeo as it is less likely to be blocked but stop frequently to be sure! This was this summer , it was a TV series of 12 shows I believe! Played to small crowds all around Korea, to lift the Spirits during the Pandemic! SoHyang was in 6 shows I believe! Also on here are several of the other songs she did! 보컬코치라는 애들이 소향처럼 부를수 있는것도 아니고 그냥 전설은 전설대로 보고 느껴야 되고 노래는 생물임. 기술적으로 어떻고 저떻고 조금씩 쪼개서 들어봐야 지들은 부르지도 못함. 흉내도 어려움. 공 좀 차고 축구 좀 해봤다고 마라도나, 메시, 손흥민이 되는게 아님. 특히나 소향은 일생에 한번 만날까 말까한 그런 전설이라 불러도 손색없는 가수임.

더우기 이건 무려 8분에 가까운 노래임 엄청 긴노래인데 엄청남 하이노트와 레인지 폭을 드나들면서 이토록 끝맺을때까지 완벽하게 구사하며 부를수 있는 가수가 정녕 다시 나올까 할정도 엄청난 편곡의 노래임. 소향만을 위한 편곡이 이 노래만 그런게 아니지만 정말 독보적이고 유니크함. 매번 볼때마다 경이로울수밖에 없음...

It's not really a gospel but the guy who wrote this is a pastor who was a famous singer in Korea and he wrote it for his sister who was going thru rough times in the 70s after a divorce...His name is Yun Hang Ki and his sister is Yun Bok Hui who worked for the US 8th Army in Korea...She later on toured with Bob Hope for USO during VN war...I think she dated Sammy Davis Jr once..kzread.info/dash/bejne/Y6SAu6aLpbexYLA.html&feature=emb_logo

Good reaction. Most people are rendered either speechless by this performance, or they just sort of burst out laughing because of how ridiculously good Sohyang is. They might start out trying to pause often to analyze this or that, but I think the usual--and proper--response is just to sit back and enjoy an unbelievably great song (and arrangement) and singer. I think you're the only one who noticed that maybe there was a teleprompter at the foot of the stage. I don't know anything about the technical aspects of singing, but like you, I think the stamina/power/control needed to sing like she did for 7 minutes is noteworthy and incredible.

Her life is so inspirational.. she is devout christian singer who really more like singing to God more than fame/money which make us not much seen her on media/tv in korea even the world stage though she is worldclass singer vocalist ever!! Yet we can ussually see her more often her singing in chtuch or charities. She won from faught with cancer and kept her singing didnt give up in her illness. Sohyang has a few notes that seem to show up a lot in her arrangements (she does her own arrangements for everything) such as eb5, g5, eb6, and d6 when she wants to hit big high notes. Her sense of musicality is truly amazing. She basically always has interesting takes on every song she sings, often making pretty drastic changes to the arrangement while simultaneously keeping enough of the original feeling that you never feel lost. On top of that her runs are super tasteful, and her dynamics, while predictable, are top notch. You can tell through the storytelling she expresses that she has a deep connection with what she's singing.

I'm sure you've been told this before she is a cancer survivor she credits her husband's love with saving her life and it has made her a dedicated gospel singer. She has expressed that her purpose is to give comfort and love to people who need it. The more you listen to her the more you will feel this I believe. A special favorite of mine is Bridge Over Troubled Water I do wish you would react to it and she also sings I Will always Love You which is only a few months old it is extremely moving. Fantastic!!!! The song was songwriter, lyricist and singer, a famous Korean singer in the 70s, and his cousin was also a singer, a song for the Seoul International Music Festival for her. The composer, lyricist and singer is now a pastor and minister. I remember because I saw the first performance on TV.

Sohyang is a gospel or Contemporary Christian Music singer. She sings to comfort and heal. Everyone was originally written as a gospel. You have to understand the lyric to truly appreciate her performace.

We all totally recognize that grin you wore for the last 3 minutes or so. At some point you just throw your hands up and say "I can't say anything that does this justice." You actually dove right into the deep end with this song as she has said it was her most difficult performance and she spent most of her preparation figuring out when to breathe. Arirang Alone, I Have Nothing, You Raise Me Up and Lean On Me are here most reacted to performances but I would suggest you skip those for now and go to 2020's I Will Always Love You which was performed in an acoustic setting during the pandemic.
