Hello Singderellos. SO. The 'eeoooo' polyphonic overtone thing I explain at first is DEFINITELY different from what she does. When I eventually managed to do it similar to her, I felt like I was blasting air into a 'barely there' falsetto while dragging quite a heavy larynx up. I then felt like a 'caught' sensation and directed all the resonance up to the ole' soft palate. I did however deem this explanation relevant as I believe this to be the same principle as polyphonic overtone singing, just the manipulation is not with the tongue, but further down in the laryngopharynx. I believe there is still a fundamental pitch, but one produced with very stretched thin cords as opposed to the the thick cord sound of the more widely known 'overtone' effect. I could of course be wrong, which is cool too. lol. I will practice this more and get back to you with more definitive answers. Maybe even one day do it with a laryngoscope so we can all know once and for all! This certainly pushed my boundaries 😂 Thank you for everything, TFVM 🧚🏻‍♀️

Stitch the beatboxer from Malaysia I mentioned in my comment on the Jinjer vid does this technique on his track "Feels like nothing", except he is sings words with it. He does a tutorial on his channel where he describes it as combining falsetto with a whisper, check it out and have yourself a geekfest.

The bassist is the founder of Snarky Puppy and the band leader. He also LOVES musicians and you can totally tell.

Lalah explained in an interview, her ENT said the anatomy of her vocal cords allow her to produce that tone effortlessly.

My favourite thing about this performance is that there is a clear before/after in terms of energy. The band absolutely goes to 200% after the "incident". :D Lovely video as ever!

Ok, so you're able to demonstrate Jinjer-style growls *and* overtone singing? That's pretty awesome 👍😀!

The technique she's using is actually different from overtone singing. A lot of beatboxers use the same technique, and the way they achieve it is by focusing on their vocal break and somehow they're able to hold 2 notes at the same time separate from overtones from their mouth shape. I haven't ever found a technical explanation of what's going on, but its got a distinct very recognizable sound from overtone singing, and I've seen a few singers stumble upon it independently. Exciting new things!

Ahh awesome! I kinda saw it as the same principal but with pharyngeal manipulation instead as it is certainly lower down than polyphonic overtone singing. When I managed to do it, I blasted a bunch of air through a loose falsetto feeling and brought my larynx up slowly. Manipulation of sorts I spose! 💜 But you’re right, certainly different from polyphonic overtone singing from a true cord fundamental pitch. It’s a weird feeling that I’m gonna practice more. I will endeavour to keep practicing and maybe one day try it with a laryngoscope so we can truly understand it once and for all x

By the way your ability to start imitating the sound right away is astounding, every time I've heard others try it, its almost always very abrasive sounding until they've practiced for a long time.

Regardless, your explanation is still of upmost importance because it does - ideed - correctly address the concepts of harmonic/overtone and complex sound (a "note" is actually comprised of multiple partials). I'm also happy to see that many comments here corroborate ideas we'd previously talked about: you're doing something right, you're doing something relevant. @@TheFairyVoiceMother Stitch by far has the best polyphonic vocal control, especially showcased in his wildcard, “Feels Like Nothing.” Also showcases his signature 626 Effect vocal technique he invented. Highly recommend checking it out.

I am in awe of your ability to break down the technical and scientific aspects of a performance such as this one.

Stitch wildcard is awesome but it's not really the same technic. It looks more like two H polyphonic voice on his GBB 2020 wildcard.

@@AdrienMartinet Stitch does use the polyphonic voice in that routine a few times, though its not the main focus. Unless you mean that his polyphonic voice technique is different, in which case you may be right, I don't really have the expertise. I know there are a few variations and Two H's polyphonic voice has a lower note in there, whereas Stitch's sounds like two higher pitched notes to me. I'm not really sure if they're variations on the same technique or fundamentally different, I suggested Stitch because it sounds nicer to me overall, but Two H is also really cool and impressive.

As someone who is super into the vocal, instrumental, and arranging areas of music, this is a perfect crossover. You've covered some incredible acapella groups with mad bass singers, something I absolutely love, and then you covered metal vocals, another thing I love, and now we have snarky puppy on here. You should check out Lingus, no vocals there but instrumentally an insane piece by them with one of the best improvised keyboard solos of this time. I also wanted to add that one of my professors in the music department of my college (FSU, go noles) told me that another professor is either a member of this group, or a sibling of a member, I don't remember specifically. Another one pertaining to my minor (major in computer science, minor in jazz) is that the trumpet professor here directs the Count Basie Orchestra, and I think our keyboardist occasionally plays with Wynton Marsaelis. It took me too long to realize how great of a music school I am in and I am not even a full major. I am pursuing arranging and performing vocals and instrumental music as well as video game development. I plan on combining the two with video game music composition. Edit: I researched a bit and found that Michael League, the bassist, arranger, and mastermind behind this band is the brother of our musicology professor.

I think I have listened to all the KZread videos by Rachelle like 100 times (plus the ones that got forever deleted), and I think I Can explain is good, and so is Autumn Leaves at Jazz Luzano 2008, or Waiting either the one at the théâtre antique de Vienne or the version where she sings with George Duke at Montreux Jazz festival. Hi. I love watching your videos. I love the way you analyze the songs and vocalists. Your interpretations and reactions are so beautifully visceral, natural and organic. I've been an amateur guitarist since my teens. I didn't know then, that my love and passion for all things musical was so powerful and satisfying. I often find myself getting goose-bumbs and a little teary when I hear something that really reaches me. As a teen I opted to be sensible and learn a trade, instead of listening to the guitar teachers at the time who told me I had an aptitude for music. I wish I had followed their guidance. So, for me, to at last, be on a self piloted journey to learn as much about music is a tremendous gift. My goal is to be able to work as a musician when I retire from my day job! I just wanted to drop you a line and say thank you. For your skill, your knowledge, your passion and enthusiasm.
