Vocal Coach Reacts To Luther VanDross | A House is not a Home | Live | Ken Tamplin
Luther Vandross was truly a master of mixed voice. His ability to move between chest voice and head voice was so seamless you never which one he was actually in.
Luther spent much of the beginning of his career singing background for many well known artists including David Bowie, Donna Summer, Bette Midler, and more.
Later in his career, he became lead singer with the group Change, which in 1980 produced their debut album which went on to be certified gold.
He would eventually leave the group and start a solo career where he went on to sell 35 million records and win 8 Grammys.
Today I’ll be reacting to a performance of Vandross singing “A House Is Not A Home” which had previously been recorded by Dionne Warwick who is attendance for his performance.
I hope you enjoy the video and please make sure to share your feedback on the performance!

His range reminds me of Whitney Houston. She's generally considered by experts to be the greatest singer of all time (certainly female). It would be interesting to learn whom experts consider to be the top 5 male singers of all time. And Luther Vandross has to be in that conversation.

You’re speaking of popular vocalists among white people. No, I am not making this a race issue. It’s just a culture issue. Yes,. Whitney was amazing. Absolutely amazing. However, you need to listen to Rachelle Farrell, Lalah Hathaway, Ledisi. They aren’t pop artists. They are strictly R&B artists. Not even hip hop. On the male side, I would advise you to listen to Kurt Ellington, Eric Benet. Prank Bryson. For more “popular” singers, a prime Mariah could give Whitney a run for her money all day. And, the immaculate Celine Dion in her prime could definitely sing with any and everyone.
he would pull out and put in his riffs whenever he wanted to. We saw him live twice and he could hold an audience of thousands in the palm of his hand.
Thank You for this reaction. Luther, you are loved and missed.
