Vocal Coach Reacts To Luther VanDross | A House is not a Home | Live | Ken Tamplin
Luther Vandross was truly a master of mixed voice. His ability to move between chest voice and head voice was so seamless you never which one he was actually in.
Luther spent much of the beginning of his career singing background for many well known artists including David Bowie, Donna Summer, Bette Midler, and more.
Later in his career, he became lead singer with the group Change, which in 1980 produced their debut album which went on to be certified gold.
He would eventually leave the group and start a solo career where he went on to sell 35 million records and win 8 Grammys.
Today I’ll be reacting to a performance of Vandross singing “A House Is Not A Home” which had previously been recorded by Dionne Warwick who is attendance for his performance.
I hope you enjoy the video and please make sure to share your feedback on the performance!

You’re speaking of popular vocalists among white people. No, I am not making this a race issue. It’s just a culture issue. Yes,. Whitney was amazing. Absolutely amazing. However, you need to listen to Rachelle Farrell, Lalah Hathaway, Ledisi. They aren’t pop artists. They are strictly R&B artists. Not even hip hop. On the male side, I would advise you to listen to Kurt Ellington, Eric Benet. Prank Bryson. For more “popular” singers, a prime Mariah could give Whitney a run for her money all day. And, the immaculate Celine Dion in her prime could definitely sing with any and everyone.

Hey Ken happy that you mentioned the legendary iconic Ms. Dionne Warwick!! Luther did a fantastic job on honoring Ms. Warwick that night. He admires Ms. Dionne so much and have stated that she is definitely a pioneer, she is his favorite, and that he have learned so much from her vocally. I can certainly tell that he learned from her as well from his vocal delivery, mannerisms, and performance style. You should do a reaction on Ms. Dionne. Here is a suggestion: "After you/I'll Never Love This way again live 1982" performance. React to second half of video where she sings "Never Love this Again". You will see what I mean 😁😊👍

This brought a big smile. for Luther's singing, the marvelous song I'd forgotten about (just love the non-belting type), and fr Ken's appreciation of it all. It also gave me a good feel for the different types of voice, that I realize I do but never knew what they were, or indeed if they were even legitimate. Of course, they're more legit when you're not a amateur like me!
