Vocal Coach Reacts to London Grammar play "Wicked Game" (Chris Isaac cover) - Analysis

Музыка

Hi, my name is Aleksandra and I'm a vocal coach based in London. Today I'll be reacting to and analysing London Grammar play "Wicked Game". It's a cover of a song originally by Chris Isaak and what a cover it is! From the vocal technique point of view, there will be a lot of talk about a larynx position!

The first time I listened to Hannah's voice was when my cousin showed me their version of Nightcall, I just fell in love with her. You should react to that song, it's really beautiful.

Thank you for your analysis and the larynx explanation, I have been wondering for a while now why her voice sounded so low in this particular session! I often see people comparing Hannah's voice to some other female singers' but there is something truly unique about her voice. I lack the knowledge to be able to describe it but in layman's terms I feel like it has something to do with her riffs and her voice seems very often to be on the verge of breaking, especially when she is singing higher and higher, but in a controlled fashion which is really beautiful. I don't know if it makes any sense? Female singers who sound so great both at a low range and at a high one are really rare. This cover feels really true to the original while the song somehow seems perfectly suited for Hannah's voice. The most amazing thing of all is probably how little vocal training Hannah had before starting singing professionally! I hope you react to some other live performances from Hannah!

I agree completely and think the same thing. It’s that transition from the low to highs with Hannah are superb ! Don’t see that in any other singer.

Lovely! Try a 14yrs russion girl doing wicked game. A most amazing voice and take on every song she does. You love a deep voice, this is a killer. The visuals illistrate the story. Ps love to here you react to Norwegian girl, Angelina jordan 12yrs. Try rehab by amy winehouse . DO NOT LET THERE AGES FOOL YOU.

Enjoy these so much. Especially when you sing. I'd love hear you analyse and react to a jazz singer called Blossom Dearie. She had an understated and intimate style and made some great recordings of the great American songbook genre.

You owe it to yourself and your viewers to watch Diana Ankudinova's cover of Wicked Game from the show You are super! The show is for disadvantaged youth. She was just 15 at the time. Diana has a one of a kind voice, and is also an amazing performer. Thank you!

Seems to me the voice used here (in the beginning) is quite deliberate and adds a hint of parody to the performance. This is much less noticeable (or not present) in the other live performance of this song by LG, also on YT).

Lovely video, thanks Aleksandra! A contralto here: what would you say, how does Hannah control her transitions so that the volume of her vocals sound so balanced between her quiet whispery moments and her belting? I am practicing recording, but when I transition to higher notes my volume instantly increases; while my lower range is very vulnerable and tender - which I kind of like, but would love to develop a more balanced overall volume. Also, when transitioning higher, my voice seems more muffled. Maybe I need to move away from the mic when I transition? Thanks!

Hey! Thanks for your comment and your question. There are many different ways of attacking high notes and working on your whole range in a balanced way. One can develop ways to be able to both belt high notes out or to sing them more quietly; go into headvoice or stay in a more contemporary sound. In terms of the high notes being muffled the reasons might also differ but generally it’s a resonance issue and the tongue - as one of the big resonance shapers - will be the culprit. Any instabilities like the ones you mention can be balanced out with some focused training. Feel free to check my website if you want to meet and chat about this more. I offer a free discovery call. Have a look: aleksandravocalcoach.com . I’m looking forward to hear from you:)

#Hannah_Reid owns this classic version. Understating the arrangement helps. #Diana_Ardukhinova owns the song on an emotional level. The band & arrangement she had was beyond belief excellent. She takes huge chances in how she phrases and it pays off. Both sing it mostly with a low larnyx, Diana varies it a lot more, Hannah has clearer high tones but does that suit the song. No. Diana's approach is ultimately superior given the intended tone. #Chris_Isaacs must settle for being the best male to do his song so far. But the song is changing gender.

it's the dynamics in this that are succulant. Unfortunately all their covers are in same style and tempo, very dissapointing, but does showcase her voice well. Where are the brave Princes, Bjork's etc nowadays?

When people sing higher than their talking voice it's totally acceptable but when they sing low or equal to it, they must be manipulating their voice to do it. Yeah... it's called singing.
