I love seeing foreigners react to John Farnham for the first time. I've seen quite a few now, and they're always like 'Wow!' from the very first line, and all us Aussies are sitting here like 'Just you wait!'. His voice is a superpower, and he and his team had a real talent for making moving songs.

This is such an anthem for us Aussies! John Farnham has been a household name for almost 50 years. He's now 73 and still sounds like this. I've seen him perform 3 times and his voice knocks your socks off. He still throws and catches the mic stand in all his shows.

This song is a real Protest song and the bagpipes confirm it. They were used to scare the enemy away in olden days too, so this song is perfect for the world today. """We are not going to sit in silence, we are not going to live in fear. We are the voice, make it loud and clear""" Then those bagpipes gurgele up and squeal it out! An amazingly evocative emotional piece of music right there! The Battle Hymn for every country on earth!

If there's anything that shows how important good technique is, and how much Farnsy has perfect technique himself, it's the fact that his voice is still just as amazing, just as powerful, just as flexible and with just as much range, even in his mid 70s. Just extraordinary!

  • @theghost6412

We dont call him "The Voice" for nothing. One of our greatest Legends, and still singing at 70+ years of age. He still has the power in his voice, but due to older age he has lost a little bit of his lung capacity. His band is plucked from all over and each is a legend in their own right with their own bands in the past. His two female backup singers are also Legends in their own right. Lisa Edwards has her own career but works so well in talent and chemistry with John that she routinely helps him in every concert and studio work. Check her out singing with him a song called "Angels". She has the same power and talent that he has, albeit she is slightly shy about it. And as for the Lovely and Legendary Venetta Fields. One of the original Ikkette's for Tina and Ike Turner, as well as singing with so many other big time legends across the globe. She came to Australia to help a few musicians and ended up pairing up with Lisa to sing with John Farnham and spent decades with him. She also never left and lives permanently in Australia and is retired but still teaches singing and does plenty of coaching for up coming singers.

Johnny's version of Help by the Beatles is a favourite of mine. It's a brilliant cover as the tempo is slowed down and the song works SO much better at a lower tempo - either John or Paul said that they had originally wanted to record it slower but for some reason they didnt change it. Thanks so much for this. John is more than an institution here in Australia, he is one of our favourite sons. His catalogue of works are amazing from his time singing solo to his time as the lead singer of Little River Band. This song is a true anthem for us and you won't find an Aussie who doesn't break into song when this comes on the radio or TV. Unfortunately bon August 23rd 23022 john underwent 12 hour surgery on his throat after the discovery of cancer. He is recovering well which is the main thing, but we are yet to hear whether or not he will be able to sing again, something he loves so much. We are all so grateful for his recorded works and I am so lucky to have seen him sing in concert on a number of occasions, but I would give it all up just to know he is going to recover from this terrible news. Welcome to the rabbit hole which contains quite a few iconic Australian singers. As many people have already mentioned, John Farnham's version of Help is a must-see. As is the duet with Jimmy Barnes singing 'When Something is Wrong With my Baby.' Then that will open the whole Jimmy Barnes/Cold Chisel rabbit hole. Lots of rabbit holes, but then again, this is Australia.

Can Not Believe You Haven't Heard Farnsie BEFORE !!! OMG! He IS The Voice. Absolute legend. Not the least because he was a Plumber's Apprentice before he launched into singing and has never had a formal vocal lesson. He said he just listened to as many other singers as he could and then just 'tried it out'. Not bad for self taught huh!? He's also a terrific song writer. You should listen to the song he wrote for his wife; " Burn For You' and " Help" ( from this same Concert } and so many more. Enjoy. : )

I think the backing vocalists deserve a bit of love as well. I’m sure John rode them hard to get what he wanted, but the result is exquisite - just listen to the acapella part. I especially like how perfectly they sync with his prolonged note in the last pre-chorus: ””How long can we look at eachotheeeeeeeerr…”. So sweet. Also, I’m forever impressed with sound engineers who make a perfect mix out of this many sound sources. Not for the faint of heart.

Us Aussies are loving ‘John Farnham: Finding the Voice’ a docu-film telling John’s amazing story. It was just released this year. I highly recommend you watch it. I laughed when they showed his 1987 tour performance in Germany - they didn’t have a bagpiper, so they just dressed a roadie in a kilt & Scottish get-up & pushed him on stage with the bagpipes to pretend to play the solo for a minute. He had major stage fright though, poor lad 😬 Hopefully he has fond memories looking back now 🤞🏻

An unofficial National anthem back in the day. Everyone could sing this one. It's the distortion in his belts that really gets me. Good to see the Legend getting some attention, when Home Free came to Australia they did part of the chorus of this song and everyone in the audience answered just like they did here, it's an unofficial anthem for all Aussies and the message is just as important now as when it was written over 30 years ago. The reason people who want an expert breakdown like this will use this version is because, on studio albums he pulls it back and doesn't give it everything like his does in a live performance. His backup singers have been with him for most of their careers (his and theirs) and when asked if they wanted to go do their own thing, which they're well talented enough to do, they always said "No, we want to stay with John" Great to see an analysis like this Beth, hope to see more John Farnham on your channel in future.

This song came out when I was 16 and it became one of my all time favourites. John Farnham is such a great singer and performer. So powerful, so macho without being unsympathetic. He even nails it being 70. Search for John Farnham, Queen, Olivia Newton-John.
