    Of course, if the competition was about the ability to sing, which it is not, as it is the Eurovision _SONG_ Contest, not the Eurovision _Singing_ Contest, there would be some other more deserving candidates to win than Loreen, including Blanca Paloma from Spain, Mimicat from Portugal, Marco Mengoni from Italy, Remo Forrer from Switzwerland, Monika Linkytė from Lithuania, Alika from Estonia and Brunette from Armenia.

    The popularity of the Käärijä is not only limited to his wonderful song, but also to himself. Captivating, funny, chatty and, above all, approachable. If you follow his performances, you will notice it. What convinced me the most was his style and manner in that Swedish newspaper interview, where he asked his supporters to stop the outbursts of hatred towards Loreen. A man who, of course, showed his typical way even after the disappointing result, but who also gives credit to the jury's favorite. Isn't this already fair, if anything?

    Awesome reaction, greetings from Finland! And I must say, the juries need more professionals like you. Pop producers and pop radio hosts and pop musicians are over represented, so they reward the kind of music they work with. Vocal professionals like you can highlight the fact that there's legit skill and technique in singing styles that are not the most obviously difficult and impressive ones like belting clean etc. Käärijä got a lot of criticism for "not being a technically good singer" but as you highlighted, there is technique here that many people might not recognise as good, even when it is. And that's exactly the sort of thing juries should be there to recognise, as professionals. At the moment that is unfortunately not how it works, so the more unique vocals and most unique musical styles get ignored by juries completely. Finland wasn't the only one ignored by juries either. I can't believe the way Spain was treated this year.

    What I like maybe the most is how much healthier role model he is for young boys than Andrew Tates of the fragile male internet. He's admitting he needs to drink to dare to dance, kind of spelling out that part of toxic masculinity, and then he goes and does it in the front of the biggest audience in Europe - and maybe the world - all sober. The issue people have with Sweden is not that it is the Jury favorite, but how excessively it is the jury's favorite. There were other entries that were technically very strong and should easily be able to compete with Sweden's entry on aspects a jury would look at (vocal control, range, composition, etc) yet got shocking low amounts of points, which in turn destroyed the competitive element. Even with a hundred less jury points, Sweden would still have won.. but a hundred points means more than 8 12-pointers, or 10 ten-pointers, etc. Every time Sweden gets the most points, other countries fall behind, and yet the juries voting behavior was basically akin to putting all the eggs into a single basket to a degree that seems almost coordinated. Sweden was good, but it was not remotely THAT good. If Käärijä barely missed out, I'd be like 'well shit, that's the story'... but instead it has become a David vs Goliath battle where it feels like other entries never stood a chance when reality clearly shows Tattoo is not iconic or otherwise comparable to ABBA's original entry, or even Loreen's previous winning track Euphoria.

    It must be remembered that ESC is not a SINGERS' competition in which the best singer is sought, but a singing competition in which the most entertaining and audience-appealing song is sought. Käärijä and Cha Cha Cha was a perfect song in this sense. Over 78% of the audience voted him as their favorite and there is no doubt that he should have been chosen as the ESC winner. Who is ESC for if not the public and ESC fans? At least not for the jury, which represents only a fraction of the voters! 😮😢

    I am from Finland and not a fan of Eurovision and I had never heard about Käärijä before. I heard Tattoo ans cha cha cha for the first time at the same time, one after the other and after that Käärijäs song stayd in my head but I couldn't remember anything but the staging about Loreen's song. Cha cha cha makes people enjoy, standing up, singing along, etc, Tattoo didn't get any emotions out of me. Still Tattoo was not a bad song and Loreen is professional singer and better than Käärijä what comes to singing, but Eurovision is not a singing contest, it is songcontest. You should watch some more videos about peoples, comtestents and journalist's reactions to Käärijä and cha cha cha. I have watced some videos about him and he seems to be a good person, warm and kind. And in my opinion these eurovision songs are made for masses not for professionals (the jury), and peoples voting should be a bigger part than just 50%, maybe 75%, or some other way changes should be done. Anyway, Käärijä got 4th in jyry votes and that is not bad. Loreen got so much more votes than the runner up, and it makes me vonder was she really so much better than the the others..

    Honestly this song doesn’t do his stamina justice. I’ve seen other performances of Käärijä where he jumps around and his voice doesn’t tremble a single bit.

    Haha he was amazing. Loreen's was a pretty standard Swedish pop song - I love her but between the lyrics and her nasal singing early in the song it didn't feel innovative I felt like I'd heard it before. But she is such a performer she killed it on stage. But I'm still listening to and singing the Finnish entrant. PS try Australia's Voyager!!

    This makes me even more sad about juries butchering him. He is not a singer like Loreen but he has variety to his vocals and is in control of his style and performance. The fact that Loreen mumbled and Käärijä does quite opposite of that is a big deal too.

  • @henrifin

    @henrifin

    11 ай бұрын

    @Mariyan Georgiev The issue isn't the total score, the issue is how it happened. Käärijä was pretty much dead last for some juries while winning for others. It's a sign that the juries aren't very balanced and don't follow the same, transparent criteria. Some really did butcher him. Like I said in my previous comment, Käärijä didn't get what he deserved considering the while different scope of technical skill that he has. Käärijä and Loreen aren't alike but only latter gets appraisal for their skills.

  • @henrifin

    @henrifin

    11 ай бұрын

    @Mariyan Georgiev Juries shouldn't be about taste. They should be as objective as possible. To be objective, there needs to be a criteria that everyone in the juries follow. Now that obviously isn't the case. Käärijä isn't the strongest vocalist but he uses versatile technique and does some things very well (rythm, articulation for example). That should have been taken into account. Just like Loreen's weak articulation should have been. AND it is a song contest, not a singing contest. Käärijä was much stronger in that perspective since the song is very unique, very versatile, very catchy, has a deeper meaning and a lesson to it, there's a storyline in it, it unites people, is easy enough to be learned quickly but not to get tired of quickly. The performance was something that makes him great too, especially since it supported his song's story and meaning. He isn't a singer like Loreen but he is so much more. That's why juries placing him dead last is butchering. Edit: Loreen was strong and deserved strong points, but did she deserve so much? Also many countries succeeded way better in televote than with juries, and it benefitted Loreen the most.

    I think you really hit the nail on the head. I believe a big reason for the success was that people instantly connected with him. Even though he kind of plays a character he's not at all pretentious. And he's a truly nice sweet guy. And you could see he (all of them) were having such a good time on that stage. That is actually a really Finnish thing that you kinda get what you see. We're an honest and straightforward bunch. I hope people don't think of the performance as just a joke thing, because I think the song itself is really good. About Finnish language. Yes, that's our normal (and only) r-sound. The Ä letters sound actually more like E (the sound for instance in "beg") then A (like in "car"). But really Ä is what we use for the sound in "can". So not A like in "car"/"cocAcolA"/"bar" but like in "can"/"cash"/"cat"/"ban"/"drag". The "j" is the sound you would use "y" for. The "i" is like "i" in "it"/"pick". So kinda like caaa-ri-ya(h) ("caaa(n)", trilled R+"i(t)", "ye(s)"/"y(es)+ä). If you want to see some more Käärijä I'd suggest watching the music video, a video of Käärijä doing Loreen's dance and my favourite song from him "MicMac" (it's about him going to visit his granny, waiting for the cinnamon rolls to come from the oven and finding old pictures of his childhood). I'm not too much into rap, but liked the heavier influences on Cha Cha Cha - reminded me of Prodigy - and Mic Mac is fun with a silly video.

    I know this is an old video but if you're not completely done with Käärijä you might want to check out some interviews, especially in Finnish. My point? He's got a really lovely speaking voice, at the same time soft, rich and crispy. It's better to listen to him speaking his native language because he really struggles with his English. That's funny in its own right, though. He's got such a sweet personality. Thank you for the video, too, your speaking voice is also very pleasant and I really liked your take on this song :)

    I haven't read all of the comments below ... His name is pronounced "Ca - like the beginning of cat (not car) a bit drawn out , sharp "r" followed by i soft j and Ä shorter this time . You can check out two other great songs he´s done - "Mic Mac" ans "Paidaton Riehuja". He says that he's been heavily influenced by Rammstein (thus his tattoo). He mixes rap/hip hop with melodic bits :) He has also said that he wants to put out exciting, suprising music so people don't know what to expect! The Finnish "R" is very sharp - like when you scots say "murder" lol. Finnish has a lot of consonants . The dancer are wearing "gumguards" in white on their own teeth. I think it was to parody the way ballroom dancers have to constantly grin and look happy with over the top makeup. I'm Finnish and first I was super angry about Sweden winning (I still think letting Björn from Abba talk and other hype was unethical/unprofessional) BUT now I think it was ok he came second because in our minds he didn't. He's such a charismatic, fun, smart and sympathetic guy, very humble really. Genuine and talanted and a breath of fresh air for us all because a lot of Finnish music can be quite harsh and serious where as his Cha Cha Cha is the equivalent of drinking 10 energy drinks or Espressos :)

    Käärijä is a rapper, not a singer. A really good rapper to that. On the other hand, he created this song and influenced the ESC presentation of it. That's talent in action ! If you want a perfect pronounciation of his artist name Käärijä, check out any German reaction to this song. The name itself is "wrapper" in Finnish, both a slang word for a (gangsta) person and also sounds like... He himself is far from gangsta, does not even drink (even piña c).

    There is actualyl a really deep message on the song when it comes to Finnish men. There is a (very accurate) stereotype about Finnish men being able to let go of their reservations without the use of alcohol. The Song is about a man going to the club and wanting to just let go and have fun, but not being able to do so without getting absolutely shitfaced, and at the moment where he starts doing the silly dances etc. is the point where he's drunk enough to just let go and have fun dancing. The "dancing" is campy and stupid on purpose since it's meant to depict someone who has no idea how to actually dance just going for it and being so drunk that he doesn't care that he looks stupid.

    Ä, ä (like Ö, ö) is it's own letter the dot's over it are not accent marks it is pronounced closest like 'a' in rap, hat, cat, bat had, sad.. He is a rapper (räp in Finnish!) actually - might explain some of his stylish switch ups ? And yes Finnish way of rolling our r's is legendary. One of the world's most known Finnish word (after sauna) is swearword 'perkele' which is very good example of Finns rolling our r's because when we are really mad we start going with it to the growling territory "GRRR", perrrkele! (There is videos of Finnish perkele - how it can be used in every situation from enjoying your first cup of coffee in morning, to the late evening.. :/ And another also how a Finn uses it to drive away a bear from his yard (and how he is worried the bear will eat his dog, before he gets the Hugo "Huuko" inside to safety - we absolutely adore dogs here.) There is a thing that we tell around, that most people and even animals who first time in their life hear "Perkele!" understand it like it is meant "You have angered a Finn, either seriously run away, or start being on your Very Best Behaviour." as we don't do emotions. So getting a Finn angry is a feat.

    The “conspiracy” isn’t really about the ABBA anniversary. Sweden consistently gets very high scores from the jury’s no matter what they send. It could be an amazing or a super boring song, they get lots of jury votes. It was particularly telling in Eurovision 2019 when Sweden placed top 5 with very few televoters, but lots of jury votes. 241 points from the jury’s and only 93 from the audience, second most from the jury, but a fairly low audience score. The winner Arcade got many votes from both the jury and the audience. On the other hand Norway got the most votes from the audience with 291 point, but only 40 from the jury. The craziest thing is that the jury don’t even make their decisions based on the live final, but the “dress rehearsal”. Norway as mentioned had technical difficulties during the rehearsal and that seem to have affected their results.
